Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: The Unnamed’s Warning – The Path of Shadows

The sun had barely set when the Unnamed appeared again.

He didn't come from the ridge this time — he simply was there, standing at the edge of the clearing where Miko and Kael had rested after the test.

No sound of footsteps.

No rustle of cloak.

Just presence.

Kael was up instantly — shadows snapping out like whips.

Miko rose slower — the seal pulsing once, almost greeting.

Him.

The Unnamed raised one scarred hand — palm open, non-threatening.

"I'm not here to fight."

Kael's voice was ice.

"You never say why you are here."

The Unnamed tilted his hooded head.

"Because some things are better shown than told."

He stepped closer — slow.

The seal hummed — deep, familiar.

Miko felt it — not fear, not hunger.

Recognition.

Kael moved between them.

"Stay back."

The Unnamed stopped.

"Looked into her eyes," he said quietly, nodding toward Miko.

"She saw the paths.

She chose one."

Kael's shadows didn't lower.

"And?"

The Unnamed's voice dropped.

"The path she chose is the harder one.

Balance requires surrender.

Surrender requires trust.

Trust… is dangerous."

Miko stepped forward — past Kael's arm.

"What do you want me to do?"

The Unnamed looked at her — hood still hiding his face.

"Stop listening to the rift-walkers.

They want control.

The seal does not want control.

It wants freedom."

Miko felt the seal pulse — agreeing.

Freedom.

Kael's shadows tightened.

"You're telling her to let it take her."

The Unnamed shook his head.

"I'm telling her to let it be her."

Miko stared.

"That's the same thing."

"Is it?"

The Unnamed took one more step — close enough that Miko could see faint silver scars on his neck, like old seal marks.

"I carried one once.

Not crimson.

But close.

I fought it.

It won.

I surrendered.

It quieted.

Then I learned to walk with it.

Not against it."

Kael's voice was low.

"You're still alive."

The Unnamed's lips curved — barely.

"Am I?"

He turned — cloak swirling.

"Follow the seal.

Or it will follow you."

He walked into the trees.

Vanished.

Miko looked at Kael.

"He's not lying."

Kael's shadows faded — slowly.

"He's not helping either."

Miko nodded.

"But he's the only one who's been where I am."

Kael looked at her — long.

"Then we find out where he's been."

They packed.

Left the camp before dawn.

The seal pulsed — once, approving.

Go.
