The real test wasn't in the clearing.
Torin led them at dawn to a narrow ravine — walls of black rock, floor of loose shale.
The Unnamed waited at the center — hood up, face hidden.
No greeting.
No words.
Torin spoke.
"Today — no fragments.
No circle.
You and him.
One on one."
Miko felt the seal flare — bright, eager.
Him.
Kael stepped forward.
"I'm not letting her do this alone."
Torin shook his head.
"She has to."
Kael's shadows coiled.
Torin's voice was calm.
"If you interfere — the seal will punish her.
Not you."
Kael looked at Miko.
She met his eyes.
"I can do this."
Kael's jaw tightened.
Then — slowly — he stepped back.
Miko walked to the center.
The Unnamed raised his hands.
Shadows rose — pure black.
Miko raised hers.
Crimson shadows joined — weaving with his.
They circled — slow.
Then — faster.
Miko moved — spear.
He mirrored — spear.
They met — tips touching.
No clash.
Just connection.
The seal hummed — deep.
Same.
Miko pushed — harder.
He matched.
She shaped — tendrils.
He shaped — tendrils.
They danced — shadows weaving, clashing, merging.
Miko felt it — the seal expanding.
Not taking.
Sharing.
More.
She gave more.
The shadows grew — beautiful, deadly.
The Unnamed spoke — low, rough.
"You're listening."
Miko nodded.
"Yes."
He tilted his head.
"Then listen closer."
The shadows shifted — not attacking.
Guiding.
Showing.
Flashes — not memories.
Possibilities.
Miko saw herself — older, stronger, the seal balanced, not consuming.
She saw Kael — beside her, alive.
She saw the academy — standing.
Then — darker flashes.
Herself — consumed, shadows eating everything.
Kael — dead by her hand.
The academy — gone.
She gasped — pulled back.
The shadows snapped apart.
The Unnamed lowered his hands.
Miko staggered.
Kael caught her.
The Unnamed spoke — one last time.
"You saw both paths.
Choose."
He turned.
Walked away — up the ravine.
Vanished.
Miko looked at Kael.
"I saw… everything."
Kael's voice was quiet.
"What did you see?"
Miko swallowed.
"Us.
Alive.
And us… dead."
Kael held her tighter.
"Then we choose alive."
Miko nodded — shaky.
"We choose alive."
The seal pulsed — once, almost agreeing.
Choose.
To be continued…
