Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: The Caves Below – Into the Dark

The caves were hidden beneath the ridge — a narrow crack in the rock, barely visible unless you knew where to look.

Kael led the way — shadows lighting the path ahead.

Miko followed — the air growing colder, damper, heavier.

The tunnel narrowed — walls slick with moisture, ceiling low.

After twenty minutes — the passage opened into a larger cavern.

Bioluminescent moss glowed on the walls — faint blue-green light.

Water dripped somewhere — slow, steady.

Kael stopped.

"We rest here.

No fire.

No light except what's already here."

Miko sank to the ground — back against the wall.

Her body ached — every muscle screaming.

The seal was quiet — almost sleepy.

She hated that more than the screaming.

Kael sat across from her — shadows dimmed to a soft aura.

They didn't speak for a long time.

Then Miko broke the silence.

"How long can we keep this up?"

Kael looked at her.

"As long as we have to."

Miko laughed — weak.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I have."

She looked at the glowing moss.

"I killed three people today."

Kael's voice was quiet.

"You survived."

Miko met his eyes.

"Is that all that matters?"

Kael didn't answer right away.

Then he said:

"Yes."

Miko stared at him.

"You really believe that?"

Kael leaned forward.

"I believe that if you die — the seal wins.

And whatever it wants gets out."

Miko swallowed.

"And if I live… but become something worse?"

Kael's eyes were steady.

"Then I stop you."

Miko felt the words like a punch.

But she nodded.

"Good."

Silence again.

Then — a sound.

A low hum — from deeper in the cave.

Kael stood — shadows snapping out.

Miko stood too.

The hum grew louder — rhythmic, almost like breathing.

Kael moved toward it — silent.

Miko followed.

The tunnel opened into a larger chamber — ceiling high, walls covered in glowing runes.

In the center — a small pool of black water.

Above it — floating — a single crimson orb.

Pulsing.

In time with Miko's seal.

The orb turned — slowly.

Like it was looking at her.

Miko felt the seal flare — hot, eager.

Home.

She stepped forward.

Kael grabbed her arm.

"Don't."

Miko looked at him.

"It's calling me."

Kael's voice was low.

"That's why we don't go near it."

The orb pulsed brighter.

The runes on the walls flared — red.

The pool rippled.

Something rose from the water — slow, deliberate.

A shape — humanoid, but not human.

Black — made of shadow and crimson veins.

No face.

Just a void where a face should be.

It reached out — toward Miko.

The seal screamed — in joy.

Miko stumbled forward.

Kael pulled her back.

Shadows surged — wall rising between them and the thing.

The creature tilted its head — then lashed out.

Crimson tendrils met Kael's shadows — clashing, sparking.

The cavern shook.

Miko felt the seal pull — hard.

She fought it.

The creature reached through the clash — tendril wrapping around Kael's leg.

It yanked.

Kael stumbled — shadows faltering.

Miko acted.

Crimson shadows exploded from her — slamming into the creature.

It staggered.

She pushed harder — shadows weaving, tightening.

The creature screamed — silent, but felt in the bones.

It dissolved — crumbling into black mist.

The orb above the pool pulsed — once, twice — then dimmed.

The runes faded.

Silence.

Kael stood — breathing hard.

Miko sank to her knees.

The seal pulsed — once, satisfied.

Kael looked at her.

"You saved me."

Miko laughed — shaky.

"First time for everything."

Kael crouched beside her.

"We're not safe here."

Miko nodded.

They stood.

The pool was still — black, quiet.

But Miko knew.

It wasn't over.

To be continued…
