"Bella." His voice was warm. Easy. The version of him I'd learned to distrust most. "Get dressed. Wear something warm. I'm picking you up in an hour."


My pulse didn't change. "Where are we going?"


"A surprise." I could hear the smile in it. "Something I've been planning. Just the two of us."


I looked at the window. The car was still there.


"Massimo, it's almost five. I wasn't expecting…"


"One hour, Valdina. Wear the cream coat. You look beautiful in it."


Sat with the silence for exactly thirty seconds.


He picked up before it rang. "I saw the call come in. What did he say?"
