Valentina stared at the message for a long time, sitting on the edge of her bed in yesterday's clothes, the flash drive still warm from being pressed against her skin all night.


Rico sent her out,  into contested zones, into rooms with dangerous men, into situations that made her skin crawl. Rico was the person who handed her to Massimo like a gift at Christmas and told her not to embarrass him.


Rico telling her to disappear meant something had shifted.


Three dots. Then nothing. The dots disappeared.


She called. It rang twice, then went to voicemail.


She sat very still, listening to the city wake up outside her window, and thought about all the reasons a man like Rico would go suddenly, completely silent.
