VALENTINA'S POV

I stared at him, refusing to look away, refusing to grant him the satisfaction of seeing me crumble.

The silence stretched, taut and suffocating, filled only by the sound of our breathing, his ragged and fast, mine controlled and shallow.

His hand hung in the air for a moment longer, trembling slightly, before he dropped it to his side.

The surprise in his eyes was curdling into something darker, a defensive realization that the woman he thought he owned had just witnessed the ugliest part of him without flinching.

Then the pivot happened.

He stepped back, his shoulders dropping, the aggressive set of his jaw softening into a practiced mask of contrition. It was terrifying how quickly the shift occurred, like watching a chameleon change colors in real time.
