Valentina's POV

After the third course, Giuliana set down her fork.

"You are a distraction, Valdina." Her tone shifted from dismissive to cutting in a heartbeat. "A pretty, temporary distraction. Massimo has responsibilities. Bloodlines. Alliances. A future that has been mapped out since he was born. You are a detour, not the destination."

She picked up her wine glass, studying me over the rim.

"Enjoy the jewelry and the outings while they last. But do not make the mistake of thinking you belong here. When this ends, and it will end, you will find that doors which are currently open to you will be closed very tightly indeed."

I met her gaze. Forced my expression to remain placid even as my heart hammered against my ribs.

She was arrogant, cruel, and entirely correct about the bloodlines. Though she had no idea how deep the divide truly ran.

I wasn't just a commoner.
