Chapter 1 - 1. The World Is Our.

There is nothing in this world that can truly be obtained, but one thing is absolutely necessary to live: humanity, or faith in humans—not in gods.

In this cruel era of modern slavery, people who are poor and denied respect stand little chance against those from the upper class. Such people often take pleasure in tormenting others in ways one could never imagine.

A child born into the upper-class family of de Valois never liked the way the lower class was treated. From a very young age, he questioned the cruelty he saw around him.

At the age of seven, he asked his father—the King of the French Empire, King Adrien de Valois—

"Why do we torture people whose clothes are torn? And when they beg for their lives, why do you behead them instead of forgiving them?"

The king was shocked, yet a little saddened, after hearing the words that came from the mouth of his son, Théon de Valois. He answered,

"Look, son, this world runs on the will of the upper class, because they have earned respect throughout the world."

But his son cut off his words and said, "Yet you have also earned hatred from your enemies. Many of your comrades have died in battles, and one day I too will have to step onto the battlefield and kill people."

The king looked intrigued by the words spoken by the little prince, Théon de Valois, and said,

"This world has natural laws that define how you live in it. Hatred is one part of those laws, and so is the torture of the poor—it is considered necessary. In this world of ours, we, the upper class, have our own rules, and that is final."

After saying this, the king turned and left the room. But Théon stopped him and said,

"Father, this world of ours will one day be ruled by everyone. Your words have many holes in them, and that proves that the lower class—the poor—also live in this world."
