Chapter 65 - Chapter 65: The Battle of the Night

"Dingling! Ringing!"

The loud alarm clock woke the three of them from their sleep. Seeing the dark sky outside the window, Icarus immediately grabbed his backpack.

"Let's go, Pidgey! Bellsprout!"

"Pidgey~!"

"Spri!"

Pidgey flew up and landed on Icarus' shoulder, while Bellsprout followed at his side.

"I wonder if there are any that slipped through the net…"

Icarus patted Bellsprout's head thoughtfully.

The guards had only hunted for one night. Unless it was an elite-level Pokémon, nighttime vision would definitely be affected.

And since Zubat acted like natural radar, there should still be a few survivors.

Even if not, the leaves on Oddish were valuable medicinal herbs. And Oddish was naturally restrained by Pidgey's Flying-type attacks.

After exchanging a few routine words with the guards at the gate, they headed toward the forest.

Not long after entering, Bellsprout struck first.

"Duo!"

A pained cry sounded beneath its feet.

"Spri!"

Bellsprout immediately jumped aside.

The grass ahead rustled, and a round-bodied Oddish with two small feet emerged before attempting to flee.

"So fast! And I only met one. Looks like quite a few Oddish survived."

Though surprised, Icarus didn't hesitate.

"Whoosh!"

A throwing knife shot toward the fleeing Oddish.

"Oddish!"

Sensing danger, it quickly dodged to the side.

"Pidgey!"

By then, Pidgey had already blocked its path.

"Duo!"

Knowing it couldn't escape, Oddish spat out a ball of green liquid.

"It's Acid! Pidgey, fly higher—then use Gust!"

"Pidgey!"

Pidgey gained altitude, Flying-type energy gathering around its wings before flapping rapidly.

"Whoooosh—!"

"That's too much!" Oddish cried out as the powerful wind battered its body.

"Spri?"

Bellsprout tugged at Icarus' pant leg, asking why it hadn't received orders.

"Bellsprout, stay alert. Pidgey hasn't had a proper one-on-one battle yet. Leave this Oddish to it."

"Spri~"

"Pidgey, use Tackle!"

After another round of Gust, Pidgey dove toward the battered Oddish.

"Boom!"

"Oddish…"

It rolled across the ground and lost its ability to fight.

"Good job, Pidgey. Finish it."

Icarus gave the order calmly.

Pidgey stepped forward and struck decisively.

"Alright, stay alert."

Icarus took out his dagger and first cut off the leaves from Oddish's head.

"Pidgey~"

With blood still dripping from its beak, Pidgey flew up to a branch and kept watch.

"Six hundred for the herbs, two hundred for the poison sac, and seventy pounds of meat…"

Oddish's poison sac was stronger than Weedle's—perfect for Bellsprout.

After removing the leaves and inedible parts, Icarus noticed how much lighter the body became.

"The textbooks were right. Most of Oddish's nutrients go to the leaves."

He packed everything sellable into his backpack. As for the remaining offal, he deliberately left it exposed.

Maybe the scent of blood would attract something else.

"It'd be even better if it attracted Zubat."

The three waited quietly for half an hour.

Nothing came.

"…I was on edge for nothing. Forget it, let's search ourselves."

Annoyed, Icarus signaled the two Pokémon to move out.

---

Later, Pidgey's sharp eyesight spotted three Weedle sleeping among tree leaves.

Bellsprout's Vine Whip struck them in their sleep. They barely had time to react.

Yellow bodies hiding among green leaves were far too obvious to Pidgey's keen vision.

However, the stronger smell of blood after processing them finally brought a reaction.

"Pidgey!"

Pidgey cried out from above, signaling shadows approaching through the sky.

"Zubat."

Icarus' eyes lit up.

"Pidgey, prepare for battle. Bellsprout, stay by my side. Wait for my command."

Excitement and tension mixed in his chest. This would be his first time commanding a true aerial battle.

"Zii—Zii—!"

The Zubat sensed them and immediately released Supersonic.

"Heh. Good thing I prepared."

Icarus quickly pulled out an ultrasonic horn and pointed it toward the incoming Zubat.

"Pidgey, use Gust to disrupt its flight!"

"Pidgey!"

Though briefly disoriented, Pidgey recovered once the horn countered the sound waves and began flapping its wings.

Chaotic air currents formed around the Zubat.

The Flying-type energy slashed against its body.

"Zii!"

Unable to stabilize, Zubat dropped lower.

"Now! Use Tackle! Knock it down!"

"Pidgey!"

Pidgey instinctively gathered energy and dove.

Suddenly, the energy inside its body flowed differently—its speed increased sharply.

"Bang!"

It struck Zubat in a flash.

"That—! That's Quick Attack! Pidgey, you learned a new move!"

Icarus' face filled with shock and excitement.

But there was no time to celebrate.

"Bellsprout! Use Vine Whip—bind it, then absorb!"

"Spri!"

Bellsprout tossed aside the ultrasonic horn and lashed out with its vines, wrapping tightly around the fallen Zubat.

The reason Zubat had dared to approach alone was simple.

When Pidgey was scouting earlier, Icarus had used the ultrasonic horn to mask Bellsprout's presence.

To Zubat's senses, there had only been one slightly weaker Pidgey and a harmless human.

It had been starving, hiding for two days without feeding.

Judging by its perception of Pidgey's energy, it believed it had a decent chance.

Unfortunately for it—

It had miscalculated.
