"Come here. Let me take a look at you, Bellsprout."
After cleaning up the battlefield, Icarus waved it over.
"Spri spriā¦"
Bellsprout walked over pitifully and showed him its wound.
Icarus saw only a faint black mark on its stem. After absorbing energy from the two Weedle, most of the damage had already healed.
"Hehe, you worked hard. I'll reward you with some PokƩmon meat."
Although he had already seen through Bellsprout's little act, Icarus didn't expose it. Instead, he took out freshly cut Caterpie meat and handed it over.
"Spri~!"
Bellsprout's expression changed instantly. It swallowed the meat happily.
Icarus nodded. Seeing how quickly Bellsprout digested the meat, he noticed that ever since its Poison typing had awakened further, even its saliva seemed more corrosive. It might not be far from learning Acid.
"Alright, let's continue."
After applying some Potion, they resumed searching.
---
Although the Weedle and Caterpie had begun reporting back to their groups, Bellsproutānow proficient with Sleep Powder and already at the upper limit of the rookie stageācould still handle them.
Icarus didn't mind if Bellsprout got injured occasionally.
Unilateral slaughter might be easier and more profitable, but it wouldn't improve combat experience.
So when they encountered five Caterpie, he barely used his throwing knives.
Compared to Weedle, Caterpie were weaker. Even if Bellsprout struggled, it could retreat with his support.
The reason this battle became difficult was simpleāBellsprout had accidentally stepped on a dry branch while sneaking and was discovered.
After taking two hits, it finally tore off the silk threads binding its body and panted heavily, staring at the two intact Caterpie opposite it.
There had been five in total.
Two were knocked out head-on.
One was seriously injured and moving slowly but still disrupting it with String Shot.
The remaining two had landed Tackle attacks when Bellsprout was entangled.
"Bellsprout! Charge in with Vine Whip and finish the crippled one first!"
"Spri!"
Bellsprout rushed forward, vines whipping.
The two Caterpie immediately shielded their injured companion and continuously fired String Shot.
Icarus's eyes lit up.
"Good. Show them your vine control! Block the front with your left vine and sweep from the side with your right!"
Bellsprout could control both vines independently. Against simple, single-direction attacks, the difference in skill was obvious.
"Spri!"
The right vine suddenly changed directionā
Smack!
One Caterpie was sent flying together with the injured one.
"Wooā!"
The crippled Caterpie immediately lost the ability to fight. The other two barely managed to stand.
"Now! They're your recovery packs. Injure and bind them!"
Crack! Crack!
The two Caterpie were whipped down again and bound tightly with thorn-covered vines.
"Spri~!"
As Bellsprout absorbed energy, it felt its strength returning and even the pain in its body easing.
Seeing this, Icarus cautiously scanned the surroundings and began processing the other three Caterpie.
But he forgot one possibilityā
The sky.
---
When Bellsprout had nearly recovered, a yellow blur suddenly flashed before its eyes.
Boom!
"Spriā!"
A massive force slammed into it. Bellsprout was knocked aside, vines loosening.
"Pidgeyā!"
A sharp cry rang from above.
"Damn it! Bellsprout, are you okay?!"
Icarus quickly stuffed the last unprocessed corpse into his backpack and hurled two throwing knives upward.
The wild Pidgey nimbly dodged in midair and let out a threatening cry.
"Spriā¦!"
Bellsprout struggled to its feet, glaring angrily at the sneak attacker.
Icarus forced a bitter smile.
"I expected to meet Pidgey eventually⦠just not like this. Can you still fight?"
"Spri⦠spriā¦"
Not fully recoveredābut still able to fight.
The Pidgey's eyes flashed with mockery.
"Bellsprout! Vine Whipādrag it down!"
"Spri!"
But Pidgey soared higher, flapping its wings rapidly. Flying-type energy gathered around its body.
"Damn itāit's using Gust! Take root!"
"Spri!"
Bellsprout forced its roots into the soil.
Butā
"Spriā!"
The wind, infused with Flying-type energy, struck like blades. Cuts appeared across its body.
Icarus's expression changed.
Grass is weak to Flying.
"Return!"
He immediately recalled Bellsprout into its PokƩ Ball.
Then, without hesitation, he retreated using the cover of the Gust's residual winds.
---
The Pidgey watched them leave.
It glanced at the two barely conscious Caterpie nearby, pride gleaming in its eyes.
Grabbing them in its talons, it flew to a branch and began eating.
---
After running a considerable distance, Icarus stopped only when he was sure the Pidgey wasn't pursuing.
He found an open clearing, sprayed Repel, and released Bellsprout.
"Spri⦠(āÆ_āÆ)"
Bellsprout lay weakly on the ground, covered in cuts.
"Good boy⦠this is my fault."
Icarus knelt down immediately, guilt and heartache in his eyes.
If he hadn't insisted on pushing further, they could have retreated without injury.
"I'll treat you right now."
He carefully began applying Potion to Bellsprout's wounds.
