At 00:00 on January 1, Galactic Standard Calendar Year 5 (30 BBY), Bespin and Corellia issued a joint announcement, declaring that Bespin had formally joined the Corellian Republic as the Bespin Mandalorian Autonomous Territory.
A new chapter began.
After giving himself a day off, on January 2, Max Vizsla set off on a business trip.
He was going to buy hardware.
That encounter battle at the end of last year had brutally exposed a glaring weakness in the Bespin Mandalorian Armed Forces: their anti-ship punch was nowhere near enough. And for an outsider with a long-standing, very personal fear of "not enough firepower," it was the kind of problem that didn't let you sleep.
Even in the most optimistic projections, it would still take three to five years before Corellian Engineering Corporation's Bespin production base was completed and could start turning out kilometer-class warships. Until then, Bespin urgently needed to acquire bombers, heavy combatants, and anything else that could plug the defensive gap created by inadequate anti-ship firepower.
In the Star Wars galaxy, the prevailing philosophy was simple: small ships carry small guns, big ships carry lots of small guns. Max had never loved that.
The warships he wanted were different: small hull, big gun; big hull, huge gun—ideally with a centerline spinal cannon running down the ship's axis. The larger the bore, the more convincing the argument.
"Uh—" CEC Senior Vice President Caesar Graves waved both hands hard. "No. That won't work."
"Why not?" Max frowned. He genuinely didn't understand.
On January 12, Max and his procurement team arrived on Corellia aboard a Mandalorian commando Kom'rk-class Mark I fighter-transport.
"First," Graves said, "materials tech is the limiting factor. Turbolasers can't be built that big."
An engineer by training, Caesar Graves spoke with the crisp confidence of someone who lived inside tolerances and failure modes. With the help of a holoprojector, he sketched a 3D cutaway of a turbolaser assembly in the air and began explaining in detail.
"This section here is the crystal prism. The particle beam is focused at this stage. The crystal's transmissivity is high, but it's never perfect—during focusing, it still absorbs part of the energy. If the beam energy is high enough, the prism overheats and melts. Once it goes, the whole focusing stage burns out."
Max rubbed his chin. In his head, the answer was immediate: kyber. The kind of kyber you used for superlasers and dreadnought-grade spinal cannons.
"I see," Max said aloud. "So what's the maximum you can build right now?"
"How big?" Graves shrugged. "By output power, the ceiling is about ten thousand terawatts. In physical terms…" He measured the air with his hands. "A barrel length of two hundred meters, give or take."
"Two hundred meters?" Max echoed. "I've never seen a gun that long in service."
Graves waved him off again, lips twisting. "Because it's not practical. You can build it—CEC can—but once you do, it doesn't buy you much."
"Doesn't… buy you much?" Max scratched his head.
"Not completely useless," Graves clarified, "but it's limited. It's basically an orbital bombardment tool."
As he spoke, he casually drew rough silhouettes of two warships, then animated one circling the other.
"A cannon that massive—whether you mount it in a dreadnought turret or run it as a corvette spinal—won't have a fast traverse rate. Modern warships have high realspace speeds. If your gun can't swing quickly enough, you can't even keep a target locked, let alone track it. Which means the only thing you can reliably shoot is a 'fixed target'—a planet."
Max pressed his lips together and nodded. "That… makes sense."
But he wasn't ready to let it die.
Respecting engineering reality didn't mean worshipping it. CEC's limits didn't automatically define everyone else's. And in this era, someone had already sketched out exactly the kind of "small hull, big gun" ship Max was dreaming about.
Was it actually practical?
He'd find out by looking at it with his own eyes.
January 16. Corulag (chart coordinate: L-9). Headquarters of Republic Sienar Systems.
"Keep up with target motion? Of course it can," RSS CEO Raith Sienar said with absolute confidence. "My Marauder has superb maneuverability. It's basically a starfighter—just scaled up."
"Really?" Max tilted his head, unimpressed. "I'll believe it when I see it."
It wasn't Max being cute for the sake of a bit. He honestly didn't trust the claim. Raith Sienar was undeniably one of the greatest weapons designers in the galaxy—but Max also knew what "cost-optimized brilliance" could turn into later, when it became doctrine instead of a prototype.
Sienar turned on his heel. "Vizsla. Come with me."
Raith Sienar had so much faith in his design that, without a single signed order, he'd built a production line for the Marauder-class corvette and produced three prototype hulls. And then… nothing. The Marauder hadn't won the Republic Judicial Forces contract.
"Their procurement officers couldn't recognize quality if it bit them," Sienar muttered as they walked.
Once they cleared into Corulag's orbital space, the Marauder proved that its designer wasn't exaggerating about agility. It turned fast—fast enough to bring the bow cannon and the wingtip heavy guns onto a high-speed "enemy ship" without the usual lag you'd expect from a corvette-sized hull.
"Size isn't the point," Sienar said, face noticeably pale, as if the maneuvering had been less kind to him than his ship. "If your propulsion is strong enough, a big ship can maneuver like a smaller one."
The Marauder's bow and stern were fitted with vectoring thrusters; that's what gave it the ability to snap its guns onto target. But the moment you threw the ship into hard maneuvers, the crew stations near the extreme fore and aft were in for a rough ride.
Max's eyes gleamed.
This was practically built for the Mandalorian Armed Forces.
In a better mood than he'd been in days, Max let himself play it cool.
"Sienar," he said, "do you want to know why the Judicial Fleet didn't buy this class?"
PS: The "10,000 terawatts" figure here is the author's handwave. For reference, heavy turbolasers on an Imperial-class Star Destroyer are often cited around 3,000 terawatts.
PPS: In the original timeline, because RSS failed to land Grand Army contracts, it chose to cooperate with the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. After that became public, near the end of the war the Galactic Senate issued an administrative order dissolving RSS.
After the Republic reorganized into the Galactic Empire, RSS was quickly reconstituted by direct Imperial order and renamed Sienar Fleet Systems.
PPPS: The production line, prototypes, and vectoring-thruster details in this chapter are also author-made.
