Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Voice of a Stranger

Loren Vex did not sleep.

Men like him rarely did—but tonight, sleep was a luxury he no longer trusted.

The shattered remains of his phone lay near the wall. The silence of the house pressed in from every corner, thick and suffocating.

Someone knew.

Someone was close.

And worst of all…

Someone was enjoying this.

By morning, Vex had replaced the phone.

New device. New number. New encryption.

Routine.

Control.

He stood near the kitchen counter, black coffee untouched, when the new phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Vex froze.

Slowly… he answered.

"…Who is this?"

A woman's voice flowed through the speaker—smooth, composed, unsettlingly calm.

"Someone trying to keep you alive."

Vex's pulse spiked. "How did you get this number?"

"Because the people hunting you already have it."

Silence.

Sharp. Electric.

Vex's grip tightened. "What do you want?"

"Relax, Loren. If I wanted you dead, you wouldn't have woken up today."

The words slid into his bones like cold steel.

"Who are you?" he demanded.

A soft pause.

Then—

"Call me a friend."

Vex's instincts screamed. Nothing about this was normal. Nothing about this was safe.

Yet…

She knew his name.

She knew he was being tracked.

She knew too much.

"Why help me?" he asked carefully.

A faint chuckle answered him.

"Because I dislike inefficient hunts."

His stomach twisted.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," the voice said gently, "the ones after you are patient… but not as clever as they think."

Vex's eyes narrowed.

"You know who they are."

"I know enough."

His breathing slowed—not from comfort, but calculation.

"And you expect me to trust you?"

Another pause.

Measured.

Controlled.

"No, Loren. I expect you to survive."

Something about the certainty in her voice unnerved him more than the threats.

"Then prove it."

The woman didn't hesitate.

"Your east-facing camera is compromised."

Vex's blood ran cold.

He spun instantly, pulling up his security feed.

Static.

Just one camera.

Exactly where she said.

"…How?"

"Because they're already inside your perimeter."

His pulse thundered.

"Who are you?" he whispered.

This time…

The voice softened.

Almost sympathetic.

"Someone who understands what it feels like to be hunted."

And then—

The line went dead.

Miles away.

Inside a silent, marble-lined study.

Raina lowered the burner phone slowly.

Albert stood nearby, watching.

Waiting.

"You've destabilized him," Albert observed.

Raina's lips curved faintly.

"He trusts fear more than logic," she said calmly.

On the screen before her—

Live footage of Loren Vex pacing like a trapped animal.

Checking cameras.

Checking doors.

Checking shadows.

"He thinks he found an ally," Albert said.

Raina leaned back.

Eyes gleaming.

"No," she murmured softly.

"He found a ghost."

Albert tilted his head slightly. "And when he realizes?"

Raina's smile sharpened.

Cold.

Predatory.

"By then… he'll already be exactly where I want him."

On the screen—

Loren Vex began packing a bag.

Running.

Just as planned.
