On the other side of the city, Kingpin and his wife Vanessa had just finished a pleasant shopping trip and were driving home.
The city's neon lights glittered under the night sky, and the trees lining the streets swayed gently in the breeze, creating an atmosphere of peace and warmth.
However, this tranquility was short-lived.
Suddenly, a massive truck charged into their path without warning, like a wild beast out of control, hurtling straight toward them with no intention of braking.
Kingpin immediately sensed danger. He quickly used his superpower to transform into diamond and lay down in front of Vanessa.
With a deafening crash, the truck slammed into their car. The force of the impact was so tremendous that the driver died instantly. Yet Kingpin's diamond-hard body withstood the collision without a scratch.
Flames erupted from the car, and smoke and dust filled the air.
A man in all-black clothing and a black mask jumped down from the truck. It was the Winter Soldier.
He glanced at the mangled car, his face expressionless.
To him, such missions were commonplace.
The Winter Soldier was unaware of Kingpin's superpowers. He believed that without powers, Kingpin and Vanessa couldn't have survived such an impact, so he made a call: "Target is dead. Mission complete."
Crossbones' furious roar came through the receiver: "I wanted him alive! Alive! Not dead!"
The Winter Soldier hung up indifferently. To him, death was the only possible outcome for his targets. Besides, thirty years ago, he'd run over his target with a car—some guy named Stark, if he remembered correctly. The Winter Soldier shook his head, watched the car explode, and only then turned to leave with peace of mind.
However, he failed to realize that this mission was worlds apart from that one thirty years ago.
Suddenly, a deafening explosion erupted behind him, making his ears ring.
He reflexively turned his head, and the sight before him left him dumbfounded, unable to believe his eyes.
A man, his body blazing with radiant light, as if forged from diamonds, burst through the raging flames, cradling an unconscious woman in his arms.
The man known as Kingpin's eyes blazed with fury and grief.
He gently set Vanessa down, stroking her tenderly, then turned his gaze like a blade toward the Winter Soldier and roared, "Did you think I was easy prey just because I retired? One by one, you all want to take my life and my family's!"
His voice boomed like thunder, shaking the very air.
Kingpin was seething with rage, yet also felt a flicker of relief. *Thank God Chen Ye gave me the Shining Fruit,* he thought. *If I were still an ordinary man, I might be dead by now.*
Had Chen Ye given him a different fruit, he might have survived, but Vanessa might not have.
*I've grown too complacent in retirement,* he thought. *This would never have happened in my prime.*
The most infuriating thing was that Vanessa had nearly died right before his eyes.
The Winter Soldier's usually impassive face finally cracked, his pupils widening in shock.
He never expected Kingpin to be different from the intelligence reports, which had clearly stated he was just an ordinary man.
Meanwhile, in a hidden monitoring room, Director Pierce watched the entire scene through the Winter Soldier's camera.
His face turned ashen as he slammed his fist on the table and roared, "What the hell is going on? Why is Kingpin also a superhuman?! What the hell is our intelligence department doing?!"
The intelligence officers lowered their heads, not daring to breathe. One foolhardy officer attempted to explain, "Based on our previous intel, Kingpin was indeed... a normal human."
Before he could finish, Pierce drew his pistol and shot him dead on the spot.
Pierce swept his furious gaze over the remaining officers and said coldly, "I don't care about excuses. I only care about results. One more screw-up, and the next person to die will be you. Now, get Winter Soldier to retreat."
His voice dripped with cold-blooded resolve.
The room fell silent, save for Director Pierce's icy voice echoing in the air.
The officers exchanged fearful glances, their hearts filled with dread.
"It might be too late," Crossbones said, pointing at the screen.
Kingpin had already transformed into a diamond-like body and was hurtling toward Winter Soldier at astonishing speed.
The sheer force of the impact sent Winter Soldier's internal organs rattling, leaving him helpless as he was sent flying through the air.
Despair filled the officers' hearts. They knew that if Kingpin defeated Winter Soldier, their mission would be a complete failure.
They couldn't imagine what kind of punishment Director Pierce would inflict upon them, the fear so overwhelming it nearly suffocated them.
At that moment, Winter Soldier lay defeated on the ground, struggling painfully to rise.
Yet, after Kingpin's diamondization, his strength had become monstrous. Winter Soldier felt his body on the verge of shattering from the impact.
A complex mix of emotions surged through Winter Soldier. He had long anticipated the possibility of mission failure, even death, but never imagined it would come so swiftly.
Lying on the icy ground, he could only watch helplessly as Kingpin advanced step by step, his heart filled with helplessness and despair.
Kingpin reached Winter Soldier, seized him by the neck, and lifted him into the air.
A cruel smile spread across Kingpin's face, as if he already saw Winter Soldier's impending death.
Defiance burned in Winter Soldier's eyes, but he couldn't break Kingpin's grip.
Meanwhile, Director Pierce watched the scene unfold on the screen.
He swiftly pointed at Crossbones and ordered, "Quick! Call Winter Soldier. Remember not to reveal our identities."
Though Pierce had planned for Winter Soldier to die at the hands of Chen Ye's forces, seeing him about to be killed stirred a flicker of pity in his heart.
After all, super-soldiers like the Winter Soldier were extremely valuable resources.
Crossbones heard Director Pierce's orders and looked helpless. *If you want me to kill the man, why are you telling me to show him mercy? That's just a pipe dream.*
Despite his internal conflict, his hands moved swiftly. He quickly pulled out his phone and dialed.
At that moment, Kingpin was focused solely on killing his attacker, not on finding out who sent him.
Just then, the phone rang. Kingpin pulled it from the Winter Soldier's pocket, suspecting it was from the person behind the attack.
With one hand gripping the Winter Soldier's neck and the other answering the phone, Kingpin heard Crossbones' voice on the other end: "If I told you this was all a misunderstanding, would you believe me? We can offer compensation. Please let him go."
