The morning air at Viserysgrad was thick with the scent of woodsmoke and freshly baked bread. Under the snapping black and red dragon banner, the lines between victor and vanquished began to blur.

"Bring out the food," Viserys commanded.

Following his orders, Ser Roland Lake had organized the servants to fire up the stone ovens. The fragrance of warm loaves wafted over the hillside, a sensory promise of stability that many of the Andal captives hadn't felt in years. There was no fresh roast yet, but the salt beef from Braavos was plentiful.

The distribution of rations was Viserys's first lesson in governance: the high-performers and the wounded ate first and best; the average soldiers followed; and finally, the surrendered Andals received their portion. To the captives' shock, they weren't being starved or shackled. In an era where "human rights" were non-existent and losers were often put to the sword or sold to Tyroshi slavers, a warm meal and a cup of tart Andal wine felt like a miracle.

"Long live Viserys!" "Viserys!"

The shouts grew in volume. With a calculated mix of martial terror and kingly leniency, Viserys was converting a defeated raiding party into a loyal labor force.

The Shield Against the Shadow

"You are a true knight, Your Majesty," Bishop Umber said, watching his kinsmen eat. "Most lords in these hills would have already sent for the slave ships."

"Selling followers of the Seven is a rot that eats a kingdom from the inside," Viserys replied. "Decent men do not trade in flesh."

Bishop Umber's expression darkened. "The Tyroshi and the Dothraki do not share your piety, Sire. They raid these hills like they are harvesting wheat. My people have been stolen for generations."

Viserys looked at the horizon. The Seven Kingdoms had loathed slavery for millennia; it was a core tenet of both the Old Gods and the New. By taking this stand, Viserys wasn't just being moral—he was being strategic. He was positioning himself as the only protector in a lawless land.

"They are my subjects now," Viserys declared. "And the Dragon does not allow others to steal his hoards."

The Living Map

Viserys grew curious about the Bishop's role. "What exactly does a Bishop of the hills do, Umber?"

"We are the glue, Majesty," Umber explained. "I travel between unnamed hamlets and hidden caves. I perform weddings in cow sheds and hear confessions in the rain. I know every rugged path, every hidden stream, and every elder's secret grudge from here to the Velvet Hills' edge."

Viserys realized the immense value of the "War Priest." Religion filled the jurisdictional gaps that swords couldn't reach. These ascetic monks were the living intelligence network of Andalusia.

"I need those priests," Viserys said. "I want every devout man who cares for his people to know that there is a seat for them at my table."

"I will go," Umber promised. "I will bring the village elders. I will tell them the Andals have fallen far enough—that it is time to rise under the Warrior's shadow."

Fortifying the Nest

As Umber departed with a small escort to begin his recruitment drive, Viserys turned his eyes back to the battered gates of his fortress. The "Pioneer" was ready to become the "Builder."

His new plan involved a Concentric Castle design. He intended to build a secondary, higher inner wall to create a "killing zone" for any enemy who breached the first gate. He also ordered the transition of the vulnerable wooden watchtowers into permanent stone bastions.

Fortification and Infrastructure Projects

Inner Curtain Wall

Material: River Stone & Mortar

Purpose: Serves as a secondary defense line and provides elevated firing positions for archers and defenders.

Stone Bastions

Material: Quarry Granite

Purpose: Constructed as fire-proof watchtowers and reinforced platforms for heavy bolt-throwers (scorpions).

Deep Well

Material: Bedrock Excavation

Purpose: Provides a critical, secure water supply to ensure the garrison survives during long-term Dothraki sieges.

Viserys watched the captives begin hauling stones. He wasn't just building a fort; he was building a heart for a new nation. He knew the slave masters and the Khals would eventually come to test these walls, but by then, the "Velvet Castle" would be made of more than just stone—it would be made of a people who finally had something to lose.
