Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Before You CameIt was raining

The kind of steady rain that made the city feel smaller.

James stood by the balcony, looking out.

Kaito sat quietly behind him.

"Before you transferred," James began, voice calm, "Shizuoka High wasn't balanced."

Kaito listened carefully.

"There were fights every week. Second-years trying to prove themselves. Third-years flexing authority. First-years getting crushed in between."

James turned slightly.

"Ren wasn't the leader back then."

"He wasn't?"

"No."

James' eyes darkened slightly.

"There was someone else."

Two Years Ago

Ren Takahashi had been a second-year.

Quiet. Observant.

Already strong.

But he wasn't the one in control.

The third-year leader at the time was loud. Aggressive. Dominant through fear.

Fights were public.

Humiliation was common.

Weak students transferred out.

"And you?" Kaito asked quietly.

James gave a small, humorless smile.

"I got involved."

Kaito's stomach tightened.

"You fought?"

"Not for control," James said. "For someone."

There had been a first-year.

Small. Targeted. Used as an example.

James stepped in.

And when he did—

The hierarchy cracked.

The old third-year leader didn't like that.

A fight happened behind the gym.

Not flashy.

Not cinematic.

Just brutal.

James won.

But that wasn't the turning point.

Ren stepped in after.

Not to fight James.

But to stop the retaliation that would've followed.

"He reorganized everything," James said quietly.

"No more public beatings. No more pointless dominance. If there was conflict, it stayed controlled."

Kaito stared.

"So Ren took over?"

"No," James replied.

"He didn't take it."

"He removed the need for the old leader."

Silence.

"That's real power," James added.

"Not loud. Not emotional. Structural."

Back to the Present

"Why didn't you tell me?" Kaito asked.

James shrugged slightly.

"Because your path isn't mine."

Kaito processed that slowly.

"So what happens now?"

James looked at him.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On whether Ren sees you as noise… or potential instability."

Kaito swallowed.

"Is he going to test me?"

James didn't answer directly.

But he said something heavier.

"If Ren approaches you… don't treat it like a fight."

"…Then what is it?"

James' gaze sharpened.

"It's an evaluation."

The Truth Beneath It

Kaito lay awake longer than usual that night.

James wasn't just strong.

He had history.

Ren wasn't just powerful.

He had vision.

And Shizuoka High wasn't random chaos.

It was structured.

Layered.

Balanced carefully.

And Kaito—

Was beginning to disturb that balance.

Not intentionally.

Not aggressively.

But visibly.

For the first time since transferring, he understood something important:

This wasn't about surviving school anymore.

It was about understanding the system inside it.

And somewhere at the top of that system—

Ren Takahashi was watching.
