Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Field Trip Incident

Second-year field trips were supposed to be boring.

Museums.

Cultural streets.

Group photos nobody liked.

Kaito walked with Miki and Daichi through the open shopping district near the coastal plaza.

Ryo and a few others were ahead.

Teachers were distracted..

Which meant one thing—

Unsupervised tension.

It happened near the convenience store.

Voices.

Not Shizuoka uniforms.

Kaito turned.

Koryu High.

Three of them.

One stepped forward, smirking.

"Well, if it isn't Shizuoka's second-years."

Ryo's shoulders tightened instantly.

"This isn't your area," Ryo replied flatly.

The Koryu student laughed. "Public space.

A shove.

Small.

Testing.

People around began slowing down.

This wasn't a school ground anymore.

This was open territory.

No Ren.

No structured control.

Just pride.

The Spark

One of the Koryu boys grabbed Daichi's collar.

"Hey—" Kaito stepped forward instinctively.

Old fear tried to crawl up his spine.

But he moved anyway.

He grabbed the wrist.

Twisted slightly.

Not enough to injure.

Just enough to break the grip.

The Koryu boy's eyes widened.

"Oh? You're the one they mentioned."

Mentioned?

Before Kaito could process that—

A punch came fast from the side.

He blocked.

Barely.

Impact rattled his arms.

Ryo engaged one of them.

Chaos began building.

Too fast.

Too unstructured.

This was exactly what Ren would avoid.

And that's when—

A calm voice cut through the noise.

"Hey."

It wasn't loud.

But it carried.

Everyone paused for half a second.

A tall, lean boy stepped forward from across the street.

Black hair. Neutral expression. School uniform slightly loose.

Beside him were two other students.

Kaito didn't recognize him.

But something about him felt…

Balanced.

The boy looked at the Koryu group.

"You're escalating in public," he saicasually. "That's messy."

One of the Koryu students scoffed. "Who are you?"

The boy tilted his head slightly.

"Does it matter?"

He stepped closer.

And the atmosphere shifted.

Kaito felt it immediately.

Presence.

Not loud.

Not aggressive.

But solid.

The Koryu leader hesitated.

That was the first sign.

Then one of them lunged—

And it ended instantly.

The newcomer moved cleanly.

No wasted motion.

He slipped the punch. Countered lightly. Shifted his weight.

The attacker stumbled back hard, breath knocked out.

Not brutal.

Not flashy.

Just decisive.

Ryo froze mid-motion.

Kaito stared.

The boy didn't chase.

He simply looked at the group.

"If you're going to test people," he said calmly, "do it somewhere controlled."

Silence.

One of the Koryu boys muttered, "…It's him."

Another grabbed his sleeve.

"Forget it."

The tension collapsed as quickly as it formed.

They stepped back.

"Another time," one of them said quietly.

And then they left.

Just like that.

The Stranger

The boy adjusted his sleeve casually.

One of his friends nudged him. "You can't help every random fight you see."

He shrugged. "They were overdoing it."

Ryo stepped forward cautiously.

"…Thanks."

The boy gave a small nod.

His eyes briefly landed on Kaito.

Measured.

Not competitive.

Not challenging.

Just aware.

"You're improving," he said unexpectedly.

Kaito blinked. "What?"

The boy smiled faintly.

"Guard was solid."

Then he turned to leave.

"Wait—what's your name?" Kaito called.

The boy glanced back.

"Daniel."

And then he walked off with his friends, blending back into the crowd like he had never been there.

Kaito stood frozen.

Miki exhaled. "Who was that?"

Daichi swallowed. "That's Daniel Park… from J High."

Kaito blinked.

"The J High?"

Daichi nodded slowly.

"You haven't heard of them?"

Ryo looked unusually serious.

"…Different level."

Aftermath

On the bus ride back, no one talked loudly.

The Koryu students had retreated too quickly.

They recognized Daniel.

That meant something.

Kaito stared out the window.

He had seen three types of strength now.

Ryo — competitive. Ren — structural. Daniel — effortless.

All different.

All controlled.

And for the first time—

Kaito realized something bigger.

Shizuoka vs Koryu wasn't the whole map.

There were other schools.

Other systems.

Other monsters walking casually in daylight.

And one of them had just stepped in…

Solved a problem…

And disappeared.
