Chapter 42 - CHAPTER 42 : The Neglected Joker Is About to Put on a “Show” for Batman

On the training floor, as the transformation time ran out, the live combat simulation automatically ended.

Ben reverted from Diamondhead back to normal and quickly walked off the field.

After that single session, the training drones had been smashed into a mess—Diamondhead had torn them apart, and jagged, pillar-like crystal spikes had punched straight through their bodies.

When training ended, the remaining drones began dissolving on their own, breaking down into countless tiny mechanical modules. After the arena finished cleaning itself, the modules automatically returned to the storage bay.

This "live combat" system was something Ben had helped upgrade when he was improving Cyborg—Batman and Cyborg had assisted, and Ben took the opportunity to refine the training room as well.

As for the mechanical drones themselves: when Ben transformed into Grey Matter, he'd redesigned them by borrowing ideas from Upgrade-style modular tech and the micro-robot concept from Big Hero 6. The drones were actually built from interlocking module swarms.

As long as you input an enemy's parameters, those modules would automatically assemble into a matching "puppet" body.

And as long as the modules weren't completely destroyed, they could self-repair.

During training, the arena also overlaid a 3D projection on the drone bodies to make the fight feel more real.

Ben came down from the field with a bright, satisfied grin, pulled out his notebook, and casually started jotting down notes about the session.

As for the combat feel of Diamondhead—Ben couldn't even describe it as merely "good."

Honestly: if someone can play Diamondhead and not smile, they're probably clinically depressed.

As a famous "wheelchair-level" beginner-friendly form from the original Omnitrix roster, Diamondhead wasn't hard to use. The diamond-like material itself was insanely hard, giving him naturally excellent durability.

On top of that, the crystal's shape and size were basically whatever he imagined. In combat, he could freely weaponize his limbs, grow extra crystal from any part of his body, or retract it at will.

He could also create independent crystal constructs—anchors, spikes, shields, and so on.

He could hold them, or fire them like projectiles. Both worked.

Compared to Heatblast, where you had to precisely control energy output and temperature, Diamondhead only needed to imagine the form change to unleash the full toolkit.

That was why Diamondhead was basically the most "lazy-friendly," all-rounder monster among the Omnitrix's first-generation lineup.

Just as Ben was writing, Shazam—fresh from chatting with Cyborg—walked over smiling.

"Ben, have you ever thought about going out for a bit?"

As he spoke, Cyborg pulled out a few football tickets and added:

"My old team sent me some tickets. They're playing in Gotham today. Want to go watch?"

"In Gotham?" Ben raised an eyebrow. "That's… genuinely impressive."

Ben wasn't particularly into football, but the moment he heard the location was Gotham, his interest spiked.

In that "city of talent," practically everyone was… capable in the worst possible way. There were rumors you could walk past a random pedestrian and they'd whip out a gun and start a robbery.

Compared to Gotham, Central City's Rogues felt innocent—like a group of harmless little girls.

For Cyborg's former team to dare play in Gotham, their backer was probably no joke.

"So you're in!" Shazam grinned, clearly thrilled Ben hadn't refused. He'd always wanted to watch his favorite team with friends.

Too bad his favorite player—Victor—was Cyborg now. No more showing up on the field. Otherwise it would've been perfect.

Ben didn't explicitly agree, but he asked the question that effectively meant "yes":

"What time do we leave?"

When Ben first transmigrated, he'd landed in Gotham—but he'd been focused on getting to Metropolis fast to meet Superman and unlock that Kryptonian DNA.

Then the Apokolips parademon incident happened on the way, and he ended up following Hal straight to Metropolis anyway.

Now he already had Kryptonian DNA logged, nothing urgent was happening, and it was honestly a good time to breathe a little.

If Cyborg and Shazam wanted to take a trip to Gotham for a game, why not? Maybe something interesting would happen.

Cyborg checked the clock built into his cybernetic body and answered:

"Kickoff is in two hours. When it's time, we can just take a Boom Tube over."

Ben paused.

"What about Batman? Since we're going into Gotham, shouldn't we at least… say hello to the local boss?"

Batman usually didn't like other city heroes operating in Gotham—even if they were "just watching a game."

And honestly, in Gotham, anything could happen.

If some criminal had a sudden bright idea in a stadium—like planting bombs or releasing gas—it wouldn't even be surprising.

"He already left," Cyborg said. "The Mount Justice access logs show he took the Batwing and headed back to Gotham a few minutes ago."

Whenever a hero enters or leaves Mount Justice, the entrance security auto-identifies them.

Flash had once complained that he'd been late to that meeting by one second because the identification step made him pause.

Cyborg closed the travel log… then, following Mount Justice communications, found the reason Batman had rushed out.

"According to his call record… Joker stole a dirty bomb."

The instant Cyborg said "Joker" and "dirty bomb," Ben didn't look scared at all.

If anything, he looked even more excited.

"Then tonight might be even more interesting."
