Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: The Green Bird

Meanwhile, behind the grand performance.

Fred, along with Kira and Athrun, waited in the lounge prepared by the Copernicus City Hall, facing the warm smiles of Uncle Heier and the others.

In contrast, the maintenance workers like Uncle Heier gazed at them with eager eyes.

Although a week had passed since the Copernicus crisis, it was only recently that their rewards had arrived alongside the medal ceremony.

Each person received triple bonuses, along with raises and promotions in their positions.

It was impossible not to be happy.

As the one who contributed the most, they naturally showed even greater enthusiasm toward Fred.

Every time they saw the multiplied numbers in their bank accounts, their affection for Fred deepened.

He wasn't just a prodigy—he was practically a god of wealth.

"I thought you wouldn't come, Fred," Uncle Heier remarked with emotion.

After all, he knew Fred disliked being the center of attention.

Yet Fred's abilities were so exceptional that wherever he went, he attracted widespread admiration—something others could only envy.

"It's quite important," Fred replied humbly, lowering his gaze.

In truth, this was also part of the plan.

Showing up this time repaid a favor to Copernicus and served as preparation for the coming chaos.

Seeing Fred's modest attitude, everyone grew even more enthusiastic toward him.

He showed no arrogance despite his achievements, still treating his seniors with respect.

He was truly a good kid.

With that thought, people in the lounge called out to Fred in small groups.

Of course, many also greeted Athrun and Kira.

After all, Athrun had been seated beside Fred during the previous incident.

"No need for such enthusiasm," Fred shook his head, somewhat uncomfortable.

"That might be difficult," Uncle Heier chuckled, turning to Athrun and Kira.

"Sorry for disturbing you."

"Not at all," Athrun replied politely with a slight bow.

His noble demeanor stood in stark contrast to the boisterous, sweat-covered men around him.

"Haha, but Athrun's skills are improving too. It'd be great to have you join our Maintenance Team in the future."

Uncle Heier was sincere, but Athrun found the remark complicated.

He would be leaving soon and likely wouldn't have the chance to join the Maintenance Team.

"Chirp~!"

A green Metal Bird cried out as if sensing the awkward silence.

"What's this?" Heier asked curiously, looking at the small bird.

"Big brother gave it to me~!" Kira boasted, extending his hand as the bird automatically landed in his small palm.

"Wow, I didn't know little Fred was so skilled at craftsmanship too," Uncle Heier observed earnestly, his face full of admiration.

Although maintenance work involved micro-manipulation skills, this bird clearly surpassed the craftsmanship of most seasoned professionals.

Having someone like Fred in the Maintenance Team would be a waste of talent.

Everyone who saw the bird clearly expressed their amazement.

No wonder he saved Copernicus—his skills alone put veteran workers like them to shame.

"I just tinker with it in my spare time."

Facing everyone's gazes and Kira's pride, Fred replied with a humble smile.

He hadn't done this to show off his skills, but rather to keep the plot moving forward.

As for these intricate tasks, they had long become second nature through daily maintenance work alongside his Golden Finger.

He believed he was no less capable than Athrun would be at his age in the future.

Since Athrun currently lacked the ability to create small birds, it naturally fell to him to handle it.

Kira still didn't know about his impending departure, so this could serve as a farewell gift.

Of course, he had also added some small functions as a hidden safeguard.

"Mr. Fred, please go prepare now."

Just as everyone was engrossed in conversation, a staff member opened the lounge door.

He spoke respectfully toward Fred in the distance.

Though still a child, Fred was addressed with the honorific "Mr."

Fred acknowledged him and turned to look at the numerous uncles before him, taking in their eager smiles.

A rare feeling of reluctance welled up in his heart.

They didn't realize this might be the last time they'd see each other for years to come.

After all, they'd spent several years together and shared life-and-death experiences.

Fred's eyes swept across the group, imprinting this scene in his memory before he continued.

"I'll take my leave now."

"Alright, take care."

"Let's have a meal together later."

"This old man is really looking forward to your speech."

Responding to their words, Fred broke into a bright smile.

He wasn't the type to dwell on sentimental farewells. After giving a slight bow to everyone, he headed toward the stage.

He still had his own future to pursue.

For early retirement, and for his family and peace.

He needed to set out once again.

"Uncle Heier, do you think Fred will stay in Copernicus?"

Among those remaining, one man approached Heier as they watched Fred's retreating figure.

Their praise for the small bird earlier wasn't empty flattery - it was genuinely impressive.

Fred staying here would truly be a waste of his talent, serving little purpose.

"This place is too small to contain someone like him."

Uncle Heier shrugged.

"But our bond with Fred won't break. The Copernicus municipal administration likely felt the same, having clearly offered Fred the highest possible treatment.

As a neutral city, no matter which faction Fred chose to serve in the future, they would have grounds for cooperation. This highest-level medal also served as Fred's guarantee.

A guarantee of sanctuary in Copernicus.

...

"I wonder what that Fred looks like."

A Coordinator girl in the crowd couldn't help asking.

"I heard his appearance has never been revealed. He can't possibly be some green-faced monster with fangs, right?"

"Probably not, though he definitely can't compare to us Coordinators in looks."

A young man nearby spoke while deliberately tilting his face upward.

The artificial sunlight fell on the boy's face, making him appear quite handsome indeed.

"Well, I think so too."

The girl didn't argue, simply adding.

"He's definitely not as handsome as that red-haired hero we saw the other day."

"Uh..."

Seeing the starry-eyed admiration on the girl's face, the young man momentarily didn't know how to respond.

It's been over half a year since we last saw that hero, yet this guy still remembers him to this day.

Are childhood friends' lives not lives?

Besides, the other person doesn't even have yellow hair - I'm the one with yellow hair!

Is this really necessary?!
