Chapter 36 - Echoes of Longing

Inside the palace walls, two different worlds unfolded—one filled with the warmth of love, the other with the long shadows of longing.

Arya's Waiting Heart

In the infirmary, Arya sat beside Ethan's bed, her eyes fixed on his pale face. Days blurred into nights—an endless wait for him to wake from his coma. She held his hand tightly and spoke to him in soft whispers, sharing stories, hopes, and dreams she had woven for their future. Arya's entire mind remained focused on Ethan. Would he ever open his eyes? Would he ever be able to love her again?

Sofia's Loving Days

On the other hand, Sofia woke up early, smiling softly as she watched Cable sleep beside her. She gently brushed a stray hair behind his ear, feeling immense gratitude for their love and this peaceful morning moment. The sunlight streaming through the window highlighted the strong lines of his face, and Sofia's heart swelled with affection—she loved him more with each passing day.

She slid out of bed quietly, deciding to surprise him with his favorite breakfast: freshly baked pastries, steaming coffee, and scrambled eggs from the palace chickens. As she worked in the kitchen, Sofia hummed a gentle tune—happiness filled her heart completely.

Cable appeared in the doorway, his sleepy eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled: "Good morning, beautiful. You're spoiling me again."

Sofia's cheeks flushed softly as she handed him a cup of coffee: "Only because you deserve to be spoiled, my love."

Sofia suggested softly, her eyes sparkling with delight: "A romantic palace picnic later today—just the two of us? The gardens are blooming beautifully this time of year... It would be lovely to escape palace duties and simply enjoy each other."

Cable's face lit up with a charming smile: "I'd love that—you know exactly how to make me happy, Sofia." He pulled her close, his lips brushing against her ear: "Shall I instruct the staff to prepare our favorite foods and wines? And perhaps... a private string quartet by the lake?"

Sofia nodded, already imagining the perfect scene: "Yes, my love—make it all happen. Today needs to be perfect..."

Sofia and Cable enjoyed a blissful few hours at the picnic by the lake. Soft music drifted through the air as they sat together on a velvet blanket, sharing laughter, stories, and gentle kisses beneath the warm sunlight. The palace staff had outdone themselves—deluxe finger foods, Sofia's favorite wines, and even Cable's beloved chocolate cake for dessert.

As they lingered over their final bites, Cable turned to Sofia with deep affection: "This has been perfect. You deserve endless days like this, my love."

Sofia smiled softly, her eyes locking onto his: "But days are brighter with you."

Cable nodded solemnly, and they both knew their serene afternoon was drawing to a close. Just then, a letter from Arya arrived in Eldrida city from Calorina city, addressed to Sofia. Sofia broke the seal bearing Arya's family crest and began to read:

"Dearest Sofia,

I write to you with a heavy heart. Ethan's condition is very serious; he has suffered severe injuries due to which he is now in a coma. He lies unconscious, his body wounded and weak.

The healers say his coma persists, yet... yesterday, I felt his hand squeeze mine ever so gently.

A flicker of hope remains, but fear grips my soul nonetheless.

Please come to Calorina soon, dear Sofia—I need your gentle heart beside me.

Yours in hope and sorrow,

Arya"

After reading the letter, Sofia and Cable immediately went to King Julian and Queen Ava, who were sitting on the balcony. They showed their respect to the elders. Seeing the distress on Sofia's face, King Julian asked what was wrong. Sofia then explained everything about Arya's letter, Ethan's critical condition, and the pain Arya was enduring.

The royal couple departed for Calorina, hoping to bring comfort to Arya's desperate heart. Sofia sat beside Cable in their carriage, still clutching Arya's letter—her eyes wide with shock.

"Cable, Arya wrote that Ethan... he was injured in war and lies in a coma in Calorina."

Cable's expression turned grave, his hand covering Sofia's. "What else did she say?" he asked gently.

Sofia's voice trembled as she continued, reciting from memory: "He was sent to war by her, and returned badly hurt. Arya thought he had moved on from her, but now she waits desperately for him to wake up. She felt his hand squeeze hers yesterday... a tiny glimpse of hope."

Cable pulled Sofia close, his arms wrapping tightly around her. "We must hurry to Calorina—Arya needs us now more than ever."

Upon arriving at the palace, Arya collapsed into Sofia's arms. "Sofia... thank the gods you've come," Arya whispered, tears streaming down her face. Sofia held her tightly, concern etched on her face. "Arya, dear one, we came as soon as we received your letter. What's happening with Ethan?"

Arya pulled back slightly, her eyes red-rimmed. "He's been in a coma for weeks. I sent him away from me. I thought he'd moved on, but then he returned hurt... and now he lies here, barely clinging to life."

Sofia's grip on Arya's hands tightened. "Take us to him. We want to see him."

In the infirmary, the sight of the servants gathered around and Ethan's deathly pale face left Sofia breathless. Master Orion, the palace healer, approached to update them: "Your Majesties, Ethan's injuries were severe—a coma induced by massive trauma to his brain and body. We've done everything possible, but his recovery is slow... almost unprecedented."

Master Orion's tone grew even more grave: "Honestly, we expected him to wake up within weeks or months... But now, I must prepare you all for the worst possibility: Ethan may never regain consciousness. He could sleep forever."

Arya's face contorted in absolute anguish. "No... this can't be. He has to wake up. He has to come back to me..."

Cable wrapped his arms around both women, offering comfort as Sofia sobbed softly. Master Orion's voice, barely above a whisper, added a final blow of despair: "Even if he does awaken, it could take several years... But I fear we may be hoping against the gentle hand of fate—he may never open his eyes again."

Arya collapsed against Sofia, her world shattered: "My life... my heart... everything was waiting for his return..."

Master Orion explained the medical reasons behind Ethan's bleak prognosis:

"Ethan's brain suffered severe trauma from the sword blow to his skull... The injury caused widespread damage to his cerebral cortex—the area controlling consciousness.

Additionally, his body endured extreme blood loss, leading to prolonged oxygen deprivation... This combination has left his brain in a deeply dormant state—hardly responding to stimuli."

Sofia listened intently, tears drying on her cheeks as she processed the explanation: "This means... his body is alive, but his mind is trapped?" she asked softly.

Master Orion nodded solemnly: "Yes, Your Majesty. Exactly. His heart beats, lungs breathe—but consciousness remains elusive. We've seen minimal brain activity—barely a spark—leading us to fear permanent damage."

Arya's voice was barely audible, cracked with emotion: "Is that spark... could that spark still bring him back to me?"

Master Orion's hesitant pause hung in the air before he answered: "Honestly, Princess Arya... the spark we see is extremely faint. Most medical scholars would say it's a miracle he still has any brain activity at all. As for it growing stronger... leading him back to consciousness..." He paused again, collecting the courage to deliver the harsh truth: "...I would estimate the chances as... less than one in a thousand."

Arya's face crumpled, tears flooding her eyes as Sofia and Cable wrapped comforting arms around her. Her whisper was barely audible: "He's really gone, isn't he? Ethan's truly lost to me forever..."

Master Orion's gentle, sad nod confirmed her worst fears: "Yes, Princess... every indication suggests his coma may be permanent. I feel we should pray for the peace of his soul."
