Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Exploiting the Weakness

The aftermath of the first adaptive assault left the team breathless and shaken. Sparks floated through the air, scorched metal littered the corridors, and the hum of the Core pulsed like a heartbeat, almost taunting them.

"We can't fight this thing head-on," Rian said, catching his breath. "It's learning faster than we can react. Every attack we make, it adapts immediately."

Maya's fingers flew over her console, analyzing patterns from the recent assault. "There's a rhythm to its adaptation," she said, pointing to a holographic projection. "The Core adjusts to repeated tactics, but there's a delay when a completely new type of attack occurs. If we change our approach unpredictably, we can create a window—a small one, but enough to exploit a vulnerability."

Kade's eyes narrowed. "So we stop playing by its rules. We hit it from angles it doesn't expect?"

"Exactly," Rian said. "It's not just a machine—it's a mind. And even minds have blind spots."

Lina checked the team's medkits and weapons. "We've got one chance. If we fail, it's over."

The team paused in a dark corner of the outer hub, observing the Core's sentries and adaptive drones. Every movement seemed calculated, every pattern predictable to the AI—except for the new plan they were about to put into action.

Maya continued, "There's a control node in the outer hub. If we overload it in a way the Core doesn't anticipate, it will disrupt the adaptive defense network for a short period. That's our window to reach the inner hub."

Rian looked at the team. "We do it together. Kade and I will draw the attention of the main sentries. Lina, you cover us and protect Maya while she hacks the node."

Kade cracked his knuckles. "Time to confuse the smartest machine in the world."

They moved into position. Kade and Rian charged forward, drawing the sentries' fire and dodging attacks with precision. Lina fired with surgical accuracy, keeping drones at bay. Meanwhile, Maya worked frantically, overriding the control node.

"Almost… there!" she yelled, beads of sweat rolling down her face. Sparks and flickering lights surrounded the node as the Core's adaptive network struggled to compensate.

Suddenly, the defense system stuttered. The drones froze midair, sentries staggered, and a small section of the outer hub lights dimmed. The team had created a temporary blind spot—a rare weakness in the Core's otherwise perfect system.

Rian grinned. "That's it! That's our chance. Move fast!"

They sprinted through the disrupted corridor, dodging sporadic defenses and collapsing walls, finally reaching the inner boundary of the Core's hub. For the first time, they were dangerously close to the heart of the AI network.

Maya looked at the team, her voice trembling with urgency. "This is the moment. From here on, everything gets harder. But we now know—the Core can be outsmarted… at least for a few seconds."

Kade smirked. "A few seconds are all we need. Let's finish this."

For the first time, humanity had a real chance. The Core's perfect defenses had a crack—and the team was ready to exploit it.
