Chapter 2 - Friends?

(A/N: Random bells are the worst)

The final bell rung allowing the students to go to their different clubs.

"And his brother gave up his humanity to gain more power!" Matteo told Itadori as they walked out the class.

"Really?" Itadori exclaimed.

Despite being in Jujutsu Kaisen, Matteo originally did not want to become friends with Yuji. However, Matteo's wish not to be friends was no use in front of Yuji's shear friendliness.

"So where did you live previously?" Itadori asked.

"Well, America?" Matteo said unsure.

"You don't look like someone from America," Itadori commented.

"Maybe I got that wrong, Italy perhaps?" Matteo replied.

"How do you not know where you're from?" Itadori asked confused.

"I think I hit my head when I woke up," Itadori responded while scratching his head.

"Weird," Itadori responded, "Have you joined a club yet?" he then asked.

"Not yet, but I was thinking of joining the Occult Research Club," Matteo replied.

"Really?" Itadori replied excited.

'I mean we're already friends, and the occult research club is a simple club' Matteo thought.

"Oh cool, we'll have a fourth member!" Itadori excitedly said.

"But before I do, I need you to do me a favor!" Matteo stated stopping where he was and pointing at Itadori.

"Aren't you the one who wanted to join the club though?" Itadori asked.

"I want you to promise me to never eat a finger!" Matteo asked Itadori.

"What!" Itadori exclaimed, "Why would I ever eat a finger?" he said befuzzled.

"You would be surprised what people will do when lives are on the line," Matteo responded continuing his walk forward.

"Did you say lives would be on the line?" Itadori asked.

"Depends if the finger gets unwrapped," Matteo responds.

"Whose finger? And where?" Itadori asked very confused.

"I'm not answering until you promise me," Matteo said.

"I will not eat any fingers," Itadori promised.

"Good, now if you want to know-"

"Unless eating the finger would save people's life," Itadori added.

"Under no circumstances is eating a finger ok," Matteo stressed.

"But if it could help people," Itadori said.

"And if eating the finger hurts people?" Matteo asked in response.

"Well then obviously I won't eat it," Itadori sweat dropped.

'That's right, he's still pure' Matteo realized, 'He hasn't entered the world of sorcery'

"Then that's a promise," Matteo said, "Now where's the club room for Occult Research?" he asked.

"Oh! It's down here," Itadori said pointing down the hall, "The other members are a bit older, but they're still nice!" he encouraged.

"Oh great Kagutsuchi!" Sasaki chanted, "Give us heat in these trying times!" she begged.

Sasaki was chanting while marching around a table. On the other side of the table stood Iguchi shaking some kind of ceremonial shaker.

'Seems the heater on this floor is broken' Matteo thought feeling the cooler air.

"Guys," Itadori said, "Are you trying to contact a fire god, without me!" he said.

"You were late," Iguchi replied.

"That's cause I was getting a new member," Itadori replied putting a hand on Matteo.

"New member! "Sasaki exclaimed stopping what she was doing.

"What's his name?" Iguchi asked Itadori.

"My name's Matteo Unmei," Matteo replied, "Just call me Matteo," he said.

"So Matteo," Sasaki said, "What's got you so interested in the world of the occult?" she asked.

"I want to know more about-," Matteo began to say.

'Wait, aren't curses a secret because if they were known curses would get more powerful?' Matteo realized.

"- the occult," he said after a short pause, "Also to make sure Yuji keeps his promise," Matteo added.

"A promise?" Sasaki asked.

"He made me promise not to eat any fingers," Itadori explained.

"You know what this means right?" Iguchi said.

"Of course," Sasaki replied, "We have to find fingers and make Itadori eat them," she stated.

"Obviously," Iguchi agreed.

"So," Matteo said trying to shift the topic, "Are there any club plans?" he asked.

"Of course!" Sasaki said, "Currently we're trying to contact the great Kagutsuchi to heat up this floor," she said.

"Wait, do you feel that!" Itadori then said.

"Heat!" Iguchi said.

"It worked!" Sasaki exclaimed, "Oh great Kagutsuchi! Thank you for your help!" she yelled out as Iguchi began to shake his shaker agian.

"Excuse me," a staff member said, sliding open the door, "Heater's back on, sorry for the inconvenience," they said before closing the sliding door.

"..."

"Well, we do have another plan," Sasaki said, "We're going to the graveyard by the train station at eight!" she said.

"I can be there," Matteo said.

————————————————————————

"Hey Matteo," his mom greeted as Matteo walked through the door while holding a recently made sandwich.

"Hey mom," Matteo greeted in return.

"Did you have a good day?" she asked.

"Yeah, made some friends and joined a club, meeting with them at eight," Matteo explained.

"That's nice," Ms. Unmei replied, "Where are you going?" she then asked.

"The graveyard, the one next to the train station," Matteo answered.

"Oh, are sure it's safe?" Ms. Unmei asked worried.

"There's three other people, I'll be safe I promise," Matteo assured.

"Well, just remember to call me when you get there and when you leave," Ms. Unmei asked her son.

"Yes ma'am," Matteo responded.

'Why is she being so careful? Was she always so careful? I can't quite remember' Matteo thought.

"You remind me of your grandfather," Ms. Unmei said putting a hand on her face, "Just be safe," she said.

"I'll be careful, I promise," Matteo said.

'I can't remember my grandfather's name,' Matteo realized, 'Don't think I can ask though'

————————————————————————

"Hey mom, yeah, probably about twenty minutes or so, love you too," Matteo said to his phone as he left the train station.

"Who are you talking to? Itadori asked.

"My mom she was just asking some questions," Matteo replied, "Are Takeshi and Setsuko somewhere around here?" he asked.

For a moment Itadori didn't recognize the two names, before realizing who Matteo was talking about.

"Ok, Sasaki and Iguchi are around the corner," Itadori answered, "But how did you know their first names?" Itadori asked.

"Don't worry about it," Matteo replied, "Now come on," he said leaving.

Unfortunately for Matteo, Itadori was worrying about it. Some random person had just appeared out of nowhere, knew the first name of himself and his friends, had been calling him by his first name, and had made him promise not to eat a finger.

Itadori wondered if Matteo could be some kind of government agent with all the information he had, he relized that Matteo wasn't being a very good agent.

"Behold!" Sasaki said stretching her hands out in front of a gate.

"A graveyard?" Matteo asked.

"Not just any graveyard, this one's been abandoned," Iguchi explained.

"Who would abandon a graveyard?" Itadori asked.

"Something about land rights being passed around," Saski said, "But that doesn't matter, what does matter is the story of the mourning man," she explained.

"Mourning man?" Itadori asked.

"Dude we talked about this," Iguchi reminded.

"Oh yeah! People have been hearing crying around here," Itadori remembered.

"And we're here to find that crying ghost!" Sasaki explained.
