[Perspective: Peter Parker]
"I'm sorry... you're saying there's a Multiverse?" Peter gasped, stepping closer to the projection. "Because I thought that was just theoretical. I mean, that completely changes how we understand the initial singularity. We are talking about an eternal inflation system and how does that even work with all the quantum mechanics involved? It is insane."
He caught himself, realizing he was rambling to a group of highly trained spies and an interdimensional warrior.
"Sorry," Peter blushed, rubbing the back of his neck. "It is really cool."
Beck smiled, placing a reassuring hand on Peter's shoulder. "Don't ever apologize for being the smartest one in the room."
"Anyway," Maria Hill interrupted, looking entirely unimpressed by the physics lesson. She tapped her data pad. "Let's get back to the threat."
The holographic projection shifted, displaying swirling entities made of pure elements.
"They were born in stable orbits within black holes," Beck explained. "Creatures formed from the primary elements: air, water, fire, earth. The science division had a technical name. We just called them Elementals."
"Versions of them exist across our mythologies," Hill added, bringing up historical texts alongside the holograms.
"Turns out the myths are real," Beck concluded grimly.
"Like Thor?" Peter asked, raising a hand slightly like he was in class. "Thor was a myth, and now I study him in my physics class."
"These myths are threats," Fury stated bluntly.
"They first materialized on my Earth many years ago," Beck said, turning to look at the projection of the Fire Elemental. "We mobilized and fought them, but with each battle they grew, got stronger. I was part of the last battalion left trying to stop them. All we did was delay the inevitable."
He looked down at his armored hands.
"There is only two left," Beck said, his voice thick with sorrow. "Fire and Water. Fire is the strongest of them all. The one that destroyed my Earth. It is the one that took my family."
"Sorry," Peter whispered, his heart aching for the man.
"The Water Elemental was supposed to materialize here in Venice today," Hill interjected, bringing up a map of the city. "But our satellites detected a massive electromagnetic disturbance just before the projected manifestation window. The entity... failed to form."
"We believe the connection between the remaining Elementals is weakening," Beck theorized, tapping the holographic map. "The destruction of the Earth and Air entities may have destabilized the quantum tether anchoring them to this reality. The Water entity couldn't maintain its physical form."
"Whatever the scientific reason," Hill said, dismissing the theory. "It bought us time. But it will not stop the primary threat."
She zoomed the map out, placing a red target over Central Europe.
"The Fire Elemental is mobilizing," Hill announced. "It will be in Prague in approximately forty eight hours."
"We have one mission," Fury said, looking directly at Peter. "Kill it. You're coming with us."
Peter took a step back.
"I'm sorry... did you say Prague?" Peter stammered. "Mr. Fury, this all seems like big time superhero stuff. I'm just a friendly neighborhood Spider Man."
"Bitch, please," Fury scoffed, crossing his arms. "You've been to space."
"I know, but that was an accident!" Peter argued. "Sir, come on, there has got to be someone else you can use. What about Thor?"
"Off world," Fury deadpanned.
"Doctor Strange?"
"Unavailable."
"Captain Marvel?"
"Don't invoke her name," Fury warned, his eye narrowing dangerously.
"Look, I really want to help..." Peter pleaded, gesturing helplessly. "But if my aunt finds out I left my class trip, she's going to kill me. And if I am seen fighting a fire monster in Europe after the Washington Monument incident, my whole class will figure out who I am. And then the whole world will figure out who I am. And then I am done."
Fury stared at him for a long moment.
"Okay," Fury said smoothly. "I understand."
Peter blinked, entirely thrown by the easy capitulation.
"I'm sorry... what?"
"Why don't you get back before your teachers miss you and become suspicious?" Fury suggested, turning his back on Peter to look at the holotable. "Dimitri, take him back to the hotel."
The heavily armed man by the door stepped forward. "Yes, sir."
Peter looked from Fury to Beck, utterly confused but intensely relieved.
"Thank you, Mr. Fury..." Peter said, backing toward the door. "And good luck."
"See you, kid," Beck offered an understanding smile.
"Yeah... see you."
[Next Day]
Peter pulled the door open, expecting to see Mr. Harrington with another warning about the tap water.
"Hello," Peter said, looking at the stern faced woman standing in the hallway.
She was wearing a crisp black suit and holding a large garment bag.
She stepped into the room without an invitation, closing the door firmly behind her.
"Um... I'm Peter Parker," Peter offered awkwardly.
"Take off your clothes," the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent instructed, her face completely devoid of expression.
"Excuse me?" Peter choked, clutching the collar of his t-shirt.
"You told Fury Spider Man cannot be seen in Europe," the agent said, unzipping the garment bag. "So I made you this... another suit. A stealth suit."
"Oh... uh, thank you," Peter breathed a sigh of relief.
"I'm sure it fits fine," she said, holding out an all black tactical uniform.
"I don't need to try it on right now..." Peter started to say, reaching for the bag.
"Take off your clothes," she repeated, her tone brokering absolutely no argument.
"Okay... sure," Peter stammered, his face burning. He turned his back to her, reaching for the hem of his shirt. "It's a little embarrassing."
"Now. Hurry up."
Peter stripped off his shirt and jeans, standing in the middle of the hotel room in just his boxer briefs, feeling incredibly exposed.
"This is weird," Peter muttered, reaching for the stealth suit.
"No, no, no. Don't put it on like that," she instructed, stepping forward to adjust the rigging of the suit.
Suddenly, the hotel room door banged open.
"Hey, Peter, did you see my..." Brad Davis froze in the doorway.
Brad stared at Peter, who was standing in his underwear, while an attractive woman in a business suit was kneeling in front of him.
"Whoa! Uh... Sorry!" Brad gasped.
"This is not what it looks like!" Peter shrieked, frantically trying to cover himself with the stealth suit.
"Just... yeah," Brad muttered, pulling his smartphone from his pocket.
He snapped a photo.
Brad turned and bolted down the hallway.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agent draws a suppressed pistol from her shoulder holster in one fluid motion, aiming directly at the open doorway.
"Oh my God! Don't shoot anybody!" Peter yelled, diving in front of her weapon. He scrambled into his jeans, not bothering to button them properly. "Brad? It's not what it looks like, buddy!"
Peter chased him out into the hallway and down the stairs, finally cornering Brad in the small outdoor courtyard of the hotel.
"Hey, man, look..." Brad held his hands up defensively as Peter approached. "I'm not here to judge your life choices, dude. If you want to hook up with some random European chick, that's on you."
"That's not what that was!" Peter pleaded, his voice cracking with panic.
"I can't pretend I didn't see what I saw," Brad said, shaking his head with a look of disappointment. "I know you're trying to get with MJ. It's obvious. But I like her too."
"Wait a minute… hey, hey!" Peter grabbed Brad's arm. "You cannot show her that photo, dude!"
"I'm sorry, man," Brad said, pulling his arm away, looking completely unapologetic. "I have to. She deserves the truth."
[Tour Bus]
Mr. Harrington stood by the open doors, looking frantically at his watch.
"It's been ten minutes!" Mr. Harrington yelled into the bus, addressing the chaotic chatter of the students. "Let's go! We have a very tight schedule to maintain if we want to see the Da Vinci exhibit!"
Peter slumped into his seat, burying his face in his hands, his anxiety completely overriding the excitement of the trip.
