Chapter 57: Road Trip to Witch Academy

"Hold on."

Rango set down his coffee cup with the deliberate patience of a man deciding how much rope to give a situation before he pulled it taut.

"I can hear the way you're saying my family's name," he said, looking at Jocelyn. "Like it's a diagnosis. I'd appreciate a plain explanation, because where I come from, implying something without saying it is just a more polite way of being rude."

Jocelyn started to answer. Luke put a hand on her arm — not stopping her, just slowing her down — and took it himself.

The werewolf who ran the Shadow Hunters had the specific manner of a man who had spent a long time as the reasonable one in a partnership and had made peace with it. He looked out the window at the police units finishing up across the street, gathered his words, and began.

"The Winchester family has been in this work longer than any of the other three," he said. "Your grandfather Anderson started what most people in the community consider the modern era of organized American dark-work. Before him, it was regional, scattered, mostly reactive." A pause. "Anderson changed that. He built methodology. He documented things that hadn't been documented. A lot of what the Grimm family uses today, a lot of what we use, traces back to Anderson Winchester's field notes."

Rango said nothing. Filed it.

"The problem," Luke continued, "is the scope."

He turned the coffee cup in his hands. "The Grimm family handles creature management — Grimm-type entities, the things that live adjacent to human communities. Werewolves who've gone feral, skin-walkers, the whole taxonomy of what most people think of as fairy tale monsters. They're specialists. They're very good at what they do and they stay in their lane." He glanced at Jocelyn. "The Harvelles run intelligence and logistics out of the Roadhouse. If something's moving across the country, Ellen knows before anyone else does. Jo does fieldwork. They maintain relationships across every faction in the dark-work community because they understand that information is the actual weapon."

"And us," Jocelyn said, her composure recovered and weaponized again. "Shadow Hunters handle containment, binding, rehabilitation where the soul contamination hasn't progressed past the threshold. We specialize in demonic entities and fallen vampires. We have protocols. We have coalition agreements. We operate inside a structure."

"And Winchesters," Luke said, "operate outside all of it."

He wasn't saying it as a complaint, exactly. More like a man reading from a case file.

"Your family hunts everything. Vengeful spirits, evil gods, demons, witches, vampires, werewolves —" he raised a hand before Rango could interject — "and before you say it, yes, I know how that sounds coming from me. The point isn't the targets. The point is the methodology." He exhaled. "Every time one of the other families gets a distress call and dispatches a team, there's maybe a forty percent chance we arrive and the Winchester who got there first has already handled it. Solo. With whatever was in the trunk of whatever car they were driving." He shook his head slowly. "That would be fine — honestly, on paper, that's impressive — except for the body count on the allied side."

Rango went still.

"Explain that."

Luke and Jocelyn exchanged a look.

"In the dark-work community," Luke said carefully, "there is a pattern associated with joint operations that involve a Winchester. The Winchester survives. The allied personnel accompanying them —" He stopped. Started again. "It's not a perfect correlation. But it's consistent enough that most organizations stopped agreeing to joint operations with your family about fifteen years ago."

The table was quiet.

Outside, the last police unit pulled away from Anna's building. The city filled in around the absence immediately, indifferent.

"My father," Rango said.

"Pete was —" Jocelyn paused, and something real moved under the composure for a second, "— Pete was different from John. In temperament. In method. What happened to Pete and Louise was —"

She stopped.

"Was what?" Rango said, very evenly.

"A conversation for when we know each other better," Luke said. Firmly, but not unkindly. "Tonight's been long enough."

Rango looked at him. Read the line. Let it go — filed it, the way he filed everything, in the part of his mind that ran on patience rather than urgency.

"Fine." He picked up The Rare Devil Records. "One more thing. My mother."

Jocelyn's expression did something complicated at the edges.

"Louise Winchester," she said, "was the most gifted field hunter of her generation and had the acquisitive habits of a crow." A beat. "Anything useful that wasn't nailed down in a seven-state radius ended up in her trunk, earmarked for her children. We are still — still — trying to locate several items she borrowed from the Shadow Hunter archive in 2003 and never returned."

"What kind of items?"

"The kind you don't leave with someone who owes you a library fine."

Rango thought about the old house. The boxes in the basement his father had told him not to open until he was ready. The trunk in the attic that required two keys.

"I'll look into it," he said, which was as close to a promise as he was prepared to make.

He stood, tucked the book under his arm, nodded at them both.

"Thank you for the information. And for Anna."

Luke stood and extended his hand. Rango shook it.

Jocelyn remained seated. "Your cousins," she said. "Sam and Dean. You should find them."

"I know."

"Sooner than you think. The Yellow-Eyed Demon isn't moving randomly." She met his eyes. "It has a list."

Rango held that for a moment.

"Good night," he said, and walked out.

Behind him, Luke looked at the table and then at his wife.

"He didn't pay," Luke said.

Jocelyn picked up her tea. "Of course he didn't."

"Just like Pete."

"Don't." She set the cup down. "Don't do that tonight."

Luke was quiet. Outside the window, a black car pulled from the curb and disappeared into the Manhattan grid.

Early morning. The museum in the specific gray light that exists between the city giving up on night and committing to day.

Rango sat in his chair behind the service desk with his eyes closed and wasn't sleeping.

He was running inventory.

Dean would be — he did the math — twenty-seven now. Sam twenty-three. The last time he'd seen them, Dean had been maybe fifteen and had spent the entire visit showing Rango card tricks he'd learned from a guy at a truck stop, while Sam had sat in the corner of the room reading something too thick for a twelve-year-old and not looking up. Their father had been in the kitchen with his father, talking in the low serious register that adults use when they don't want children to understand the conversation and children always do anyway.

He remembered Sam's face when they left. The way the kid had watched the car pull out from the window, like he was committing the license plate to memory in case he needed it later.

Youngest one always pays the most attention, his father had said, on the drive home. Remember that.

He hadn't understood what that meant then.

He was starting to.

The knock at the museum door came at seven forty-two, eighteen minutes before the Curator was due. Rango checked his watch, already knew who it was, and didn't move.

Ted, who had been reorganizing the artifact intake log with the focused energy of a man who processes stress through administrative tasks, beat him to it — crossed the foyer, worked the deadbolt, pulled the door open.

The man who came in was twenty-four, built lean and quick, with the specific alertness of someone who'd grown up in neighborhoods where ambient awareness was a survival skill rather than a choice. He looked around the museum entrance with bright, interested eyes and the immediate comfort of someone who walked into unfamiliar rooms and decided they owned them within thirty seconds.

"Your injuries," Ted said, looking him over. "How are you?"

"These?" Kevin waved it off. "Bro, I've been running in Queens since I was twelve. This is a Tuesday." He grinned, fist-bumped Ted with the ease of someone who'd known him for years rather than a week, then crossed to Rango. His expression shifted — not less warm, just more serious, the way people are serious with people they owe something real to. "I mean it. Thank you. I don't know what would've happened if you hadn't—"

"Don't," Rango said. "You'd have figured something out."

"I really wouldn't have."

"Then we'll never know, because you didn't have to." He reached into his desk drawer and slid a book across the surface. "Read this before the Curator gets here."

Kevin looked at the cover. Night Security Operations: A Field Guide to Museum Protocols, Emergency Procedures, and Incident Documentation.

He flipped through three pages. Closed it. Looked up. "You need a manual to be a security guard?"

"That manual," Ted said, from across the room, "contains seventeen years of accumulated institutional knowledge about what happens in this building after ten PM, and I wrote the appendix myself."

Kevin looked at the appendix. Looked at Ted. Looked at Rango.

"He's serious," Rango said.

"I can see that." Kevin tucked the book under his arm with the specific energy of someone who was absolutely going to read it eventually. "So what do I need to know about this Curator?"

"He's one of the few genuinely decent people in a position of institutional power that I have ever personally encountered," Rango said. "Treat him accordingly. No street, no shortcuts, no charm offense. Just respect and attention."

Kevin straightened slightly, without being told to. "I got it."

Rango watched him and believed it.

He and Ted exchanged a look — the kind that doesn't require words, just the shared recognition that they'd made a reasonable call.

Rango stood, checked his watch, and reached for his jacket.

"You're leaving again?" Ted said. Not a complaint. Factual, the way Ted was factual when he was deciding whether to make something a complaint.

"Massachusetts." He picked up a separate bag from beside the desk — packed before he'd sat down, because he'd known since the conversation with Jocelyn that this was the next stop. "Amos made contact last night. There's a situation at the Academy that intersects with Emma's case."

Ted processed this. "The witch school."

"The Academy, yes."

"The witch school in Massachusetts."

"Ted."

"I'm just confirming the destination." He crossed his arms. "Am I holding down the fort again?"

Rango looked at him. At the new guy with the security manual under his arm. At the museum around them, the mannequins patient in their cases, the artifacts in their low-lit rows, all of it quietly waiting for whatever the night would bring next.

"Kevin's going to need someone to show him the building," Rango said. "The actual building. Not the version the Curator knows about."

Ted looked at Kevin.

Kevin looked at Ted.

"The actual building," Kevin repeated slowly.

"He'll explain," Rango said, shrugging on his jacket. "Ted's good at explanations."

He picked up the bag. Picked up The Rare Devil Records. Paused at the door.

"Don't let him read the appendix alone," he said. "First-timers need context."

The door swung shut behind him.

Ted looked at Kevin.

Kevin looked at Ted.

"How different," Kevin said carefully, "is the actual building from the one I just saw?"

Ted pulled up a chair.

"You read Ghostbusters," he said, "as a documentary rather than a comedy?"

Kevin sat down.

"...Go on," he said.

[Four hours later. Somewhere on I-95 North.]

McQueen held ninety without effort, the Connecticut landscape moving past in the gray early-morning light, the kind of flat December sky that commits to neither weather nor clarity.

Rango had the radio on low — classic rock, because McQueen seemed to have opinions about genre — and was running through what Jocelyn had said.

The Yellow-Eyed Demon isn't moving randomly. It has a list.

Sam and Dean were on it. Had to be. Everything the Yellow-Eyed Demon did operated on a generational timeline — it planted, it waited, it harvested. Whatever it had done to Sam before he was born, whatever it had done to Emma, those weren't random selections. That was cultivation.

Which meant somewhere in this country, his twenty-three-year-old cousin was driving toward something he didn't fully understand yet, with his older brother riding shotgun and their father's mythology sitting between them like a third passenger.

And somewhere ahead of Rango, in Massachusetts, was the piece of Emma's case that Amos hadn't been able to resolve with the resources currently available.

He pressed the accelerator.

McQueen, apparently in agreement, gave him a little more.

"This ain't a song for the broken-hearted," the radio said, from somewhere back in the previous night, in an apartment that no longer had all its floors.

Rango turned it up.

Massachusetts could wait twenty more minutes.
