Chapter 56: The Four Great Demon Hunting Families

The blue light faded from his knuckles the way a coal fades — not all at once, but with the specific patience of something that had done its work and was satisfied.

Where the entity had been, there was now just floor. Damaged floor, slick with black residue that was already losing its viscosity, already becoming something a crime scene investigator would file under unknown organic compound and think about at 3 AM for the rest of their career.

And in the corner, curled against the baseboard with her knees pulled to her chest, was Anna.

The slime covered her from the entity's abdominal cavity — translucent, unpleasant, already drying at the edges. The composure she'd carried into the museum at ten-thirty, the careful posture and the deliberate smile and the perfume calibrated for effect, was entirely gone. What was left was a woman in her late thirties sitting on the floor of her destroyed apartment looking at her own hands like she didn't recognize them.

Rango crossed the room and took her by the throat.

Not hard enough to close the airway. Enough to pin her against the corner wall so she understood the situation clearly.

Her eyes found his. Didn't plead. Didn't fight. Just stayed open and waited, with the specific resignation of someone who had already decided they deserved whatever came next.

He'd been right earlier — she'd planned to cook him. He'd clocked it the moment the fork went into the second plate. The Rare Devil Records had documented six Devotees who'd followed the same ritual path Anna had taken, and all six had used the same method of host acquisition: seduce, isolate, eliminate, consume. The entity fed on the negative emotional residue of the act. Efficient, if you didn't have a conscience. Her husband hadn't been in Germany. Her husband had been in the Cumberland sauce.

He tightened his grip.

"Please."

The word came from his left — not Anna. The woman who'd been painting the runes had crossed the room quickly and put herself within arm's reach, not touching him, but present in the way of someone who intended to be heard. Up close she was mid-forties, dark hair going silver at the temples, the kind of face that had been beautiful and hadn't stopped, just changed registers.

"She was used," the woman said. "The entity found the seam and worked it open. Whatever she did while it had her — that wasn't free will."

"Half an hour ago," Rango said, not releasing his grip, "this woman was going to put me in a cast-iron pan and serve me to whatever came next."

"I know."

"She killed her husband."

"I know that too." Her voice stayed level. The level of someone who had said hard things in hard rooms before and understood that the tone mattered more than the volume. "The soul contamination is real and it's serious. But it's also reversible if you catch it early enough. We have people who do nothing else." She paused. "Give her to us. What she becomes after that is our responsibility."

Rango looked at Anna.

Anna still hadn't spoken. Still wasn't fighting. The tears running down her face were quiet and completely without performance, which was the only thing in this apartment that felt entirely real.

He thought about Emma. About what Amos had told him the night he'd first explained Emma's situation — the contamination that preceded her birth, planted by something that operated on generational timelines, that had been sitting in her like a splinter working its way toward something vital. About the line Amos had drawn, carefully, between contaminated and gone.

He hadn't asked Amos what happened if Emma crossed that line.

He released his grip.

Anna slid down the wall and sat on the floor and put her face in her hands, and the sound she made was not something Rango was going to think about on the drive home.

"She harms anyone," he said, to the room, to the woman with silver-streaked hair, to the eleven hunters who were watching from various positions around the wreckage, "I come looking for you first. That's not a threat. That's accounting."

Several of the hunters looked at each other with the specific expression of people who had been operating in a city for years and were now being informed, by a man they'd met twenty minutes ago, that the city belonged to someone else.

Rango didn't address that.

The woman crouched beside Anna, touched two fingers to her forehead, and Anna's eyes closed and her breathing slowed and she was simply asleep, sitting upright against the corner wall, the way children fall asleep in car seats.

The woman stood. Extended her hand.

"Jocelyn." She nodded toward the large man who had come back through the floor and was standing near the window reassembling himself into something that passed for human — jacket, composure, the careful architecture of normalcy. "My husband Luke. We lead the team."

Rango shook her hand. Looked at Luke.

"Your husband's a werewolf."

"My husband leads the Shadow Hunters," Jocelyn said, with the tone of someone who had answered a variant of this question many times. "Those aren't mutually exclusive."

"Fair."

He picked up The Rare Devil Records from the debris — it had survived the entire evening without a mark on it, which said something about the binding quality of sixteenth-century manuscripts — and turned to find Clary at his elbow.

She was watching him with the bright, assessing attention of someone who was twenty-two and had decided to be interested in something, which in Rango's experience was one of the more persistent forces in nature.

"Winchester," she said. Not a question. Just the name, sitting there.

"That's going to keep coming up tonight, isn't it."

"Probably." She tilted her head. "Any relation to—"

"John's my uncle," he said. "My father was Pete. Pete Winchester." He paused. "If those names mean something to you, I'd appreciate knowing what."

Clary opened her mouth.

"Clary." Jocelyn's voice carried from across the room. Not loud. Didn't need to be. "Take the team back. Check in with Hodge, get everyone documented and rested."

Clary's expression cycled through argument, assessment, and strategic retreat in about two seconds. "But—"

"Now."

"Okay." She backed up, eyes still on Rango. "We'll talk."

"Looking forward to it," he said, and meant it.

The coffee shop two blocks down was the kind of place that exists in every New York neighborhood — open late, indifferent to its customers' business, staffed by someone who'd stopped making eye contact with strangers around the third week of the job. Rango ordered black coffee. Jocelyn ordered tea. Luke ordered coffee, drank it in two swallows while it was still scalding, and set the cup down with the energy of a man with places to be.

"Whatever you want to know," Luke said, "ask it. We've got people waiting."

Outside, through the window, the police presence in front of Anna's building was visible — two units, the chief talking to one of the Shadow Hunters who'd stayed behind. The conversation had the body language of an old agreement being confirmed rather than a new situation being explained.

"The Four Families," Rango said.

Luke and Jocelyn looked at each other.

"You don't know," Jocelyn said. Flat. Not quite a question.

"I was overseas. Twelve years." He turned his coffee cup in his hands. "Ghana, mostly. My education in the work came from my father and from a man named Amos. Neither of them were big on the organizational chart."

Jocelyn's expression moved through something complicated. "Your father is Pete Winchester."

"Was. He's been gone six years."

A pause. Then: "And your mother?"

"Louise."

The corner of Jocelyn's mouth did something involuntary — the specific micro-expression of someone who has a history with a name and hasn't fully processed it into neutrality.

"You look like her," she said. "The stubbornness especially."

Rango set down his cup. "You knew her."

"The work is a small world." She folded her hands on the table. "The Four Families make it smaller." She glanced at Luke, who gave a slight nod. "The Four Great Hunting Families are the major organized forces in the American dark-work community. Each operates as a lineage — the knowledge, the methods, the specific supernatural contracts pass through bloodlines."

"Which four?"

"The Grimm Family. Pacific Northwest, primarily. Four generations of warden-class hunters, focused on creature containment and classification — they're why we have any reliable taxonomy of what's actually out there." She paused. "The Harvelle line — Ellen and Jo, if those names mean anything to you. They operate through the Roadhouse network. Midwest corridor, everything from Kansas to the Montana border. Intelligence, logistics, safe harbor. If you need to know where something is moving, you call the Harvelles."

Rango knew those names. His father had mentioned Ellen Harvelle exactly once, in the tone men use for people they respect completely and owe something to.

"The Shadow Hunters — us. Northeast and eastern seaboard. Containment, binding, rehabilitation where possible." She said it without pride, just inventory. "And the Winchesters."

She said the last one the way you say the name of weather.

"What about us?"

Luke made a sound that wasn't quite a laugh. "Your family has been hunting longer than any of the others. No fixed territory. No organizational structure. No coalition agreements." He leaned back. "John Winchester spent thirty years running a solo operation out of a '67 Impala with two kids in the back seat, and somehow managed to cover more ground than teams of twelve." He paused. "Your uncle is... a point of ongoing discussion in the community."

"And my father?"

Jocelyn was quiet for a moment. "Pete was different from John. Quieter. More interested in the why than the what." Something shifted in her expression — not grief, exactly, but the older cousin of it. "He and your mother were very important to a lot of people for a long time."

Rango looked at his coffee.

"Nobody told me that."

"No," Jocelyn said. "I imagine they wouldn't."

Outside, the police units were pulling away from Anna's building. The city kept moving around them, indifferent and continuous, the way cities are — all of this happening in the gaps between the normal world's awareness, same as it always had.

"The Yellow-Eyed Demon," Rango said. "Moving east. You've heard of it."

Luke went very still in the particular way of someone receiving information they already have.

"We've heard of it," he said.

"Then we should talk more." Rango picked up The Rare Devil Records from the table beside him. "Not tonight. Tonight I need to go explain a hole in an apartment floor to someone who's going to have a great deal to say about it." He stood, left cash on the table. "But soon."

Jocelyn looked up at him. "Your mother," she said, "would have handled tonight very differently."

"Probably," Rango agreed. "But she's not here. So you get me."

He buttoned his jacket and walked out into the New York night, the book under his arm, McQueen waiting at the curb with the patience of something that had all the time it needed.

[Museum. 2:11 AM.]

The door opened.

Ted, Emma, and Megan were exactly where he'd left them — Ted standing rather than sitting, with the specific posture of someone who had been about to leave and had been talked out of it and was still undecided about whether he'd made the right call.

Rango set the book on the service desk.

Set the brass knuckles next to it.

Set the Colt next to that.

Looked at Ted.

"Twelve hunters," he said. "A werewolf. The leader's wife knew my mother. There are apparently four major hunting families in this country and nobody thought to mention this to me."

Ted stared at the items on the desk.

"Are you hurt?"

"Bruised. Nothing structural." He sat on the edge of the desk. "Also, Anna Manina killed her husband and was feeding him to a medieval European entity classified as Entry Seventeen in that book, and I need to brief Amos before he hears it from somewhere else."

Ted was quiet for a moment.

"In Ghana," he said finally, "when someone came back from a solo operation and reported twelve new contacts, a werewolf, and a family conspiracy, we called that an incident report. We filed it together. Over coffee." He paused. "I'm just saying."

"I know, Ted."

"I would have been useful."

"I know."

"The hole in the floor—"

"Also know."

Ted picked up his jacket from the chair. Put it on. Looked at Rango with the expression of a man who had made his point and was choosing, for tonight, to leave it there.

"Coffee," he said. "You're buying. And you're going to tell me everything from the beginning, including the part about your mother, which is clearly the part that actually matters."

Rango looked at him for a moment.

"Yeah," he said. "Okay."

The museum settled around them, mannequins patient in their cases, the city going about its business outside the high windows. Somewhere uptown, in the wreckage of a fortieth-floor apartment, a woman who had done terrible things was sleeping the dreamless sleep of someone whose contamination was, for the first time in months, someone else's problem.

And in the archive upstairs, on the shelf where Rango had left it three weeks ago, the space beside The Rare Devil Records waited for whatever came next.
