A little after five in the morning, all was silent. The sky was turning a fish-belly white on the horizon, and dew had formed like pearls on the tips of the grass.
Renee Jennings pulled open the back door and got into the car. "Morning."
"Renee, morning," Kyle Morgan greeted her from the driver's seat.
Sawyer handed her breakfast from the passenger seat. "Renee, I picked this up from downstairs at my place. It's not much, but have a bite."
"Okay." Renee didn't stand on ceremony. She took it and began to eat while listening to Sawyer explain the details of the urgent mission.
"A citizen spotted Kaiser while eating at a barbecue stall. We suspect it's the one that bit Elias Yardley."
"But according to the person who reported it, Kaiser didn't attack any customers. It fled after being discovered. The caller was still worried, though, afraid other people might get accidentally hurt by it."
