Chapter 12 - The Alliance

The uneasy alliance between Akira, Rika, and Kazuki began the next day, though not without tension. The trio sat together in a shadowy corner of the C-rank common room, speaking in low voices as they cautiously observed the passing students.

Kazuki leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, a faint crackle of electricity flickering around his fingers. "First thing we need to do is figure out who we can trust. We're not taking down the council alone."

"And how exactly do we find allies without tipping off the A-rankers?" Rika asked, her tone sharp. "It's not like we can just hand out recruitment flyers."

Kazuki smirked. "Relax, teal-head. I've got my ways."

Rika scowled but said nothing, crossing her arms as she leaned against the table.

Akira cleared his throat, trying to diffuse the tension. "Okay, so who's on your radar?"

Kazuki's smirk faded, replaced by a thoughtful expression. "There are a few strong contenders in the C-rank. People who've been around long enough to see how the system really works. I've been keeping tabs on a couple of them."

"Like who?" Akira asked.

Kazuki leaned forward, lowering his voice. "First, there's Hana. Her Sigil lets her manipulate shadows-she's practically invisible when she wants to be. She's sharp and resourceful, but she doesn't trust anyone. We'll need to prove we're worth her time."

"Shadows, huh?" Rika muttered. "Sounds useful, but also dangerous."

"Exactly," Kazuki said. "Then there's Kenji. He's a tank-a B-ranker who just got demoted last week. His Sigil gives him insane strength and durability, but he's pissed at the system for knocking him down. We might be able to use that anger."

Akira frowned. "Won't it be risky working with a B-ranker?"

Kazuki shrugged. "Everything we're doing is risky. If you're scared, you're in the wrong game."

"Who else?" Rika asked, ignoring Kazuki's jab.

Kazuki hesitated. "There's one more. Mira. She's quiet, but her Sigil lets her read emotions—sometimes even predict moves in combat. She's never climbed higher than C-rank, but that's because she stays out of the spotlight. If we can get her on our side, she'd be invaluable."

"Alright," Akira said, nodding. "So how do we approach them?"

Kazuki grinned. "Leave that to me. I've got a few connections. In the meantime, you two focus on climbing the ranks. The stronger we are, the more seriously people will take us."

The first test of their alliance came during the week's C-rank challenge: a team-based gauntlet designed to test cooperation and strategy.

The arena was a sprawling labyrinth filled with traps, puzzles, and roaming mechanical sentries. Students were split into teams of four and tasked with reaching the central chamber, where a limited number of tokens awaited.

Akira, Rika, and Kazuki found themselves grouped with a fourth teammate—a quiet girl with dark hair and piercing blue eyes. She introduced herself as Mira.

"Well, that saves us some trouble," Kazuki said with a grin.

Mira barely acknowledged him, her gaze focused on the holographic map projected in front of them. "The sentries patrol in predictable patterns," she said, her voice calm. "If we time our movements carefully, we can avoid most of them."

Akira raised an eyebrow. "You've done this before?"

"Enough to know how it works," Mira replied.

Rika leaned toward Akira and whispered, "I guess she's not big on small talk."

"Focus," Mira said without looking up.

The challenge began with a blaring horn, and the team moved quickly into the labyrinth. Mira took the lead, her movements precise and deliberate as she guided them through the twisting corridors.

"Stop," she said suddenly, holding up a hand.

Ahead, a sentry clanked down the corridor, its mechanical limbs glowing faintly. Mira watched its movements, then gestured for the group to move.

Akira felt a rush of relief as they slipped past the sentry without incident. "Nice call," he said.

Mira didn't respond, her focus already on the next obstacle.

As they moved deeper into the labyrinth, the challenges grew more complex. Rika used her barrier Sigil to block a sudden hail of arrows triggered by a pressure plate, while Kazuki's electric Sigil short-circuited a particularly aggressive sentry.

When they reached a massive locked door blocking the central chamber, Akira's flames roared to life. The others stepped back as he melted the reinforced metal, carving a path forward.

"Impressive," Mira said softly, her blue eyes lingering on the flames.

Akira wasn't sure if it was a compliment or a warning.

In the central chamber, chaos reigned. Dozens of students clashed in a desperate scramble for the glowing tokens, their Sigils lighting up the cavernous space.

"Stick together!" Kazuki shouted, his electric sparks crackling as he fended off an opponent.

Mira's eyes darted around the room, her expression focused. "Three tokens on the far side. Minimal resistance."

"Let's move," Rika said, raising her barrier to deflect a burst of fire from a nearby combatant.

The team pushed through the chaos, Mira's guidance helping them avoid the thickest of the fighting. Akira's flames cleared the path as they reached the tokens, their glowing surfaces pulsing faintly.

"One each," Kazuki said, grabbing a token.

Akira and Rika each took one as well, but Mira hesitated, her gaze scanning the room.

"What's wrong?" Rika asked.

"Trouble," Mira said simply.

A second later, the ground trembled, and a group of six students barreled toward them, their Sigils flaring dangerously.

"B-rankers," Kazuki muttered, his grin fading. "Looks like they're here to knock us down."

Akira's flames surged as he stepped forward, his blade materializing in his hand. "Then let's show them what we're made of."
