Chapter 18 - The Stand

The Rift loomed ahead, its glowing energy twisting the air into shimmering waves. Akira and his team stood their ground as three rival teams closed in, their sigils blazing with power. The ground trembled underfoot, and the hum of the Rift grew louder, pressing against their senses like a living force.

"Here they come!" Rika shouted, her barrier snapping into place as a volley of glowing projectiles rained down on them.

"Stick to the plan!" Akira called, raising his flaming blade. "We hold the marker no matter what!"

Kazuki grinned, electricity crackling around him as he launched a bolt at the nearest team. "I'll give them something to think about."

Mira's voice cut through the chaos, calm and sharp. "Left flank, two advancing fast. Rika, cover them. Kazuki, cut off their retreat."

The battlefield erupted into a blur of energy and movement.

Two combatants from the nearest team rushed toward Akira, their sigils blazing. One wielded twin blades wreathed in frost, while the other summoned arcs of golden light that crackled with energy.

Akira met them head-on, his flaming blade clashing against the frosty weapons. Steam hissed and rose around them as fire and ice collided, and Akira gritted his teeth, forcing his opponent back.

The second fighter unleashed a golden arc at him, but Rika's barrier shimmered into place just in time, absorbing the blow.

"Go, Akira!" Rika shouted.

With a burst of flames, Akira swung his blade, sending his frosty opponent sprawling. He turned and lunged at the second fighter, his flames roaring as they overwhelmed the crackling arcs of light.

On the left flank, Kazuki faced down three combatants at once, his electric Sigil flaring with wild energy.

"Come on, then!" he taunted, dodging a spear of shadowy energy and countering with a crackling arc that forced his opponent to retreat.

The second attacker summoned a storm of wind, sending debris flying toward Kazuki, but he dug in, his sparks forming a shield around him. "You'll have to do better than that!"

Kazuki leapt forward, his fists crackling with energy as he struck the ground. Lightning arced outward, forcing the attackers to scatter.

"Two down, one to go," he muttered, his grin widening.

From her position near the marker, Mira observed the battlefield with a calculating gaze. Her shadowy sigil flickered, tendrils darting out to disrupt the movements of the opposing fighters.

One opponent, a girl with a glowing whip, charged toward the marker. Mira intercepted her, her shadowy tendrils wrapping around the whip and yanking it away.

"Not so fast," Mira said, her voice cold as she sent out a burst of dark energy, knocking the girl off balance.

Another opponent lunged at her, but Mira sidestepped smoothly, her tendrils lashing out to trip him. "Watch your footing."

The air grew heavier as the Rift's energy swelled, its glow intensifying. The remaining fighters from the rival teams regrouped, forming an uneasy alliance to take down Akira's team.

"They're coming together," Mira warned.

"Good," Akira said, flames igniting around him. "Let them. We'll take them all at once."

The combined force of the rival teams charged, a wave of sigils and energy aimed directly at the marker.

Rika's barrier flared to life, shielding the group as the first attacks struck. "I can't hold this forever!"

"Then don't," Kazuki said, electricity sparking along his arms. "Hit them back!"

Mira's tendrils lashed out, disrupting their formation, and Akira stepped forward, his flames roaring to life.

With a shout, Akira unleashed a massive arc of fire, forcing the attackers to scatter. Kazuki followed up with a crackling bolt of electricity, knocking two fighters to the ground.

Mira struck with precision, her tendrils wrapping around the legs of a spear-wielding fighter and pulling him off balance.

Rika dropped her barrier and sent a focused wave of energy toward the remaining opponents, forcing them back.

The rival teams faltered, their formation crumbling under the combined assault.

As the last of the rival fighters retreated, a deep rumble echoed through the Rift Zone. The Rift itself pulsed violently, and cracks began to spread across the ground.

"Something's happening!" Rika shouted, her barrier snapping back into place as the air grew thick with energy.

The Rift flared, and from its depths emerged a second Rift Beast—larger and more powerful than the first. Its body crackled with chaotic energy, and its glowing eyes locked onto the marker.

Akira's flames burned brighter as he stepped forward. "We take it down. Together."

Kazuki grinned. "Now this is what I'm talking about."

Mira and Rika moved into positions, their sigils flaring as the Rift Beast roared and charged.

The final battle for the Rift had begun.
