Chapter 5 - Allies and Rivals

The token felt heavier in Akira's hand than it looked, its glowing surface pulsing faintly with warmth. He stared at it for a moment, catching his breath and letting the chaos of the arena fade into the background. Around him, students were still clashing, shouts and bursts of energy ringing through the air.

"Nice work," Rika's voice called from behind him.

Akira turned to see her approaching, her teal hair slightly singed at the edges and her uniform looking even more tattered than before. She flashed him a tired grin, holding up a token of her own.

"You got one too?" Akira asked, surprised.

Rika nodded. "Barely. That guy with the rock fists slipped up, and I managed to snag his token while he was running. Let's just say I'm not in the mood to play nice with bullies today."

Akira couldn't help but smile. "I think we both got lucky."

"Luck had nothing to do with it," Rika said, poking him in the chest. "That Sigil of yours? It's insane. I've never seen flames like that, and I've been here long enough to know what most D-rankers can do. You're going to make waves, Akira. Big ones."

Before Akira could respond, a loud horn blared, cutting through the din of the arena.

"That's the end of the challenge," Rika said, her smile fading as her eyes scanned the battlefield. "We need to get out of here before the cleanup squads arrive."

"Cleanup squads?" Akira asked, his confusion growing.

"Let's just say they're not here to help," Rika said, tugging his arm. "Come on. Let's move."

The two of them hurried toward the edge of the arena, weaving through the maze of shattered rocks and scorched earth. Around them, students who had failed to secure tokens looked defeated, their expressions a mix of anger and despair. Some clutched at injuries, while others simply stared blankly ahead, as if resigned to their fate.

Akira's stomach twisted. "What happens to them?"

Rika didn't answer right away. When she finally spoke, her voice was soft. "They're expelled. And like I told you before, expulsion here isn't just getting sent home. It's… worse."

Akira's chest tightened. "They just disappear?"

Rika nodded grimly. "That's why we fight so hard. No one wants to find out what happens when you fall through the cracks here."

They reached the edge of the arena, where a towering gate opened into a corridor. A few other students trickled in, clutching their tokens and nursing their wounds. The atmosphere was heavy with tension and unspoken relief.

In the D-rank common area, the atmosphere remained subdued. The room was cramped and dimly lit, with mismatched furniture that looked like it had seen better days. Akira and Rika slumped into a corner booth, their tokens glowing faintly on the table between them.

"So, what now?" Akira asked, glancing around at the other students.

"Now we wait for the results," Rika said, leaning back and closing her eyes. "The school evaluates everyone who participated. If you passed, you get to stay. If not…" She trailed off, but Akira didn't need her to finish the sentence.

Before they could talk further, a shadow loomed over their table.

"Well, if it isn't the firebrand," a voice drawled.

Akira looked up to see Kazuki, the cocky C-rank student he'd noticed earlier in the courtyard. His electric Sigil flickered faintly around his hands, crackling like static. Kazuki smirked, his sharp features and confident posture radiating an air of effortless superiority.

"Didn't think a newbie would pull off a move like that," Kazuki said, his eyes narrowing as he studied Akira. "That flame of yours turned some heads."

Akira tensed, unsure if Kazuki was here to fight or just mock him. "What do you want?"

Kazuki laughed, a low, mocking sound. "Relax, rookie. I'm not here to pick a fight. Not yet, anyway. I just wanted to see the guy everyone's talking about."

"Talking about?" Rika asked, sitting up and crossing her arms.

"Word travels fast here," Kazuki said with a shrug. "A newbie D-ranker with a legendary Sigil? That's not something you see every day. You've got potential, kid, but don't let it go to your head."

Akira frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means this place will chew you up and spit you out if you're not careful," Kazuki said, his smirk fading into a more serious expression. "You've got power, sure, but power isn't everything. Strategy, alliances, and knowing when to strike that's how you survive here."

Rika rolled her eyes. "And I'm guessing you're offering to be his mentor or something?"

Kazuki chuckled. "Hardly. I've got my own goals to worry about. But consider this a friendly warning. If you think climbing the ranks is just about flashy Sigils and brute strength, you're in for a rude awakening."

With that, Kazuki turned and walked away, his electric Sigil sparking faintly as he left.

"What was that about?" Akira asked, watching him go.

"Just Kazuki being Kazuki," Rika said, waving a hand dismissively. "He likes to mess with people, but he's not wrong. The higher ranks aren't just stronger they're smarter, more ruthless. If we're going to climb, we'll need more than just raw power."

Akira nodded, her words sinking in. As much as he wanted to believe that his newfound Sigil would be enough, he couldn't ignore the truth. Chaos Realm High School wasn't just a test of strength; it was a battlefield where only the sharpest and most determined survived.

That night, as Akira lay in his bunk, staring at the cracked ceiling, he couldn't stop replaying the day's events in his mind. The thrill of awakening his Sigil, the fear of the battle, the weight of the token in his hand it all felt surreal.

He clenched his fist, determination hardening in his chest. If he was going to survive here, he needed to get stronger. He needed to understand his Sigil, learn the rules of the ranking system, and figure out who he could trust.

Above all, he needed to uncover the truth about Chaos Realm High School before it consumed him.
