Chapter 4 - Awakening the Sigil Part 2

The boy lunged, his spear aiming straight for Akira. Without thinking, Akira raised the blade, its flames roaring to life. The spear clashed against it, the impact causing a ripple in the air.

The girl with the whip snapped her weapon toward Rika, who summoned her translucent barrier just in time. The whip cracked against the barrier, sending ripples of energy across its surface.

"Akira, I'll hold them off," Rika shouted. "Go find a token!"

"No way!" Akira said, dodging another thrust from the boy. "I'm not leaving you here!"

"Don't be stupid!" Rika gritted her teeth as the boy with stone fists barreled toward her, slamming into her barrier. Cracks spread across the surface, and Rika's face twisted with effort as she tried to hold it together.

Akira's heart pounded. The three opponents were overwhelming them, and he had no idea how to use his Sigil effectively. But he couldn't let Rika face this alone.

The flames around the blade surged, as if responding to his determination. Akira swung the weapon in a wide arc, and a torrent of fire erupted from it, forcing the spear-wielding boy to leap back with a startled cry.

The girl with the whip turned toward Akira, her eyes narrowing. "Not bad, newbie. But let's see how you handle this!"

She lashed out with her whip, which extended impossibly far, glowing with a sickly green light. Akira tried to block with his blade, but the whip coiled around it, the green energy snuffing out the flames.

"What—?" Akira gasped as the blade dissipated in a burst of sparks.

"Your sigil's impressive," the girl said with a smug grin. "But you've still got a long way to go."

Before she could strike again, Rika's barrier collapsed, and the boy with stone fists lunged at her. Time seemed to slow as Akira saw the panic in her eyes.

Something inside him snapped.

Heat surged through his body, hotter than before, and the symbol of his sigil appeared in the air again, blazing brighter than ever. This time, the flames didn't form a blade. They exploded outward in a wave, engulfing their attackers.

The boy with stone fists stumbled back, his arms glowing red-hot from the heat. The girl with the whip yelped as the flames licked at her weapon, forcing her to release it. Even the spear-wielder retreated, his face pale.

When the flames subsided, Akira stood in the center of a scorched circle, his breathing heavy. The attackers hesitated, exchanging nervous glances.

"You're not worth it," the spear-wielder spat before turning and running, the other two following close behind.

Rika sagged against the nearest rock, her chest heaving. "What… what was that?"

Akira stared at his hands, which still glowed faintly with residual heat. "I don't know," he said honestly.

Rika grinned weakly. "Whatever it was, remind me not to get on your bad side."

A faint glimmer caught Akira's eye. In the distance, a token rested on a pedestal, its glow unmistakable.

"Look!" he said, pointing.

Rika followed his gaze and nodded. "Go. I'll catch up."

Akira hesitated for only a moment before sprinting toward the token. As he reached out to grab it, the warmth of his sigil seemed to pulse in recognition.

His fingers closed around the medallion, and for the first time since arriving at Chaos Realm High School, Akira felt a flicker of hope.

The challenge wasn't over, but he had taken his first step forward.
