Chapter 57 - Chapter 57:The First Kill As Four

Lightning split the sky.

For a single frozen moment, the entire world turned white.

The sea king towered beside them — massive, coiled, jaws open wide enough to swallow the mast whole. Its scales glistened under the stormlight, each plate thicker than armor. Pale eyes locked onto the ship with primal hunger.

Then darkness returned.

And it struck.

The creature lunged downward with crushing force, jaws descending toward the center of the deck.

"NOW!" Ryu shouted.

Aira twisted the helm hard.

The ship tilted sharply just as the sea king's jaws slammed down. Instead of crushing straight through the deck, its bite scraped along the side rail and mast support with a thunderous impact that shook the entire vessel.

Wood cracked.

But held.

Ryu moved first.

He sprinted forward across the tilting deck and leapt directly toward the creature's lowered head. Armament surged across both knives as he drove them downward into the soft joint beneath its upper jaw.

The blades sank deep this time.

The sea king roared — a sound that vibrated through bone and wood alike — thrashing violently as Ryu released and flipped back toward the deck before being thrown off balance.

Kenji didn't wait.

He launched himself up the creature's coiled body as it rose again, boots finding brief purchase between scale ridges. Rain made everything slick, but his balance held. He ran along its length for three rapid steps—

Then swung.

His blade, coated fully in hardened Armament, carved across the creature's exposed gill line in a heavy diagonal strike.

This time it cut deep.

Dark blood sprayed into the storm.

The sea king convulsed, smashing part of its body against the ship's side in a desperate attempt to dislodge him. Kenji kicked off immediately and flipped back onto the deck, landing in a low crouch.

"…That got its attention," he muttered.

"It already had attention!" Aira snapped.

She fought the helm as another massive wave slammed into them. The ship bucked violently, nearly throwing Soren off balance before he caught a support rope and stabilized himself.

The creature plunged beneath the surface again.

But not retreating.

Circling faster.

Angrier.

Ryu landed lightly beside Kenji, breathing steady despite the strain pulling at half-healed injuries. Rain ran down his face, mixing with spray and blood from earlier strikes.

"…We finish this together," he said.

Kenji grinned. "Finally."

Soren stepped closer, eyes tracking the water with surgical precision. Even without firing, his awareness cut through the chaos. He watched the pattern of movement beneath the surface.

"…It's preparing a full breach," he said calmly.

Aira's jaw tightened. "Meaning?"

"Next attack won't test," Soren replied. "It will commit."

Ryu nodded once.

"Good."

He stepped forward toward the bow again, feet planting firmly against the rocking deck.

Kenji moved beside him.

Aira adjusted the ship's angle carefully, reading wave direction and wind in rapid calculations. If the creature hit them at the wrong angle, the hull could split. If they met it correctly—

They could end it.

Lightning flashed again.

The sea exploded.

The sea king surged upward directly ahead of the ship, body launching vertically from the depths in a full breach. Its massive form rose above them like a living wall, shadow swallowing starlight as its jaws opened wide for a final crushing descent.

Ryu didn't move back.

He stepped forward.

Armament flowed over both knives fully now, dark sheen hardening along the blades and across his forearms.

"Kenji," he said quietly.

"Yeah."

The creature descended.

Aira spun the helm sharply, angling the ship just enough to avoid a direct crushing impact while still keeping the head within striking range.

"NOW!" she shouted.

Ryu leapt.

Kenji with him.

They crossed paths midair in opposite arcs.

Ryu drove straight toward the creature's open maw, twisting mid-flight to avoid its descending teeth before plunging both knives deep into the soft upper palate. Armament surged through the blades, forcing penetration past scale and cartilage.

The sea king convulsed.

At that exact moment—

Kenji appeared above it.

He had used the creature's own momentum, launching off its rising body to gain height. His sword raised high overhead, fully coated in hardened Armament, gleamed under a lightning flash.

For the first time since entering North Blue—

His strike carried full intent.

Not hesitation.

Not testing.

A swordsman's cut.

He descended.

Blade falling in a clean, devastating arc directly across the creature's exposed neck joint where Ryu's attack had forced its head back.

Steel met flesh.

Then bone.

The strike tore through.

A deep, final cut that split scale and sinew with explosive force.

The sea king's roar choked off instantly.

Its massive body spasmed once—twice—then collapsed sideways into the ocean with a thunderous crash that sent waves exploding outward in all directions.

Ryu and Kenji both hit the deck hard as water surged across the ship, drenching everything in cold spray.

For several seconds—

Only storm and sea remained.

Then the water stilled.

The massive shape beneath the surface sank slowly, dark blood dispersing into the surrounding waves before being swallowed entirely by the deep.

Gone.

Silence followed.

Heavy rain softened slightly as the worst of the storm began to pass. Thunder rolled farther away now. The wind remained strong but no longer violent enough to tear sails free.

Aira steadied the helm and exhaled slowly.

"…It's down," she said.

Kenji rolled onto his back, staring up at the rain-filled sky with a wide grin. "That was fun."

Ryu sat up slowly beside him, breathing controlled despite the strain across his body. He wiped rain from his eyes and looked out across the dark sea where the creature had vanished.

"…Yeah," he said quietly.

Soren stood near the mast, scanning the water for any further movement. After a few seconds, he nodded once.

"Confirmed," he said. "Neutralized."

The storm continued to fade.

Clouds broke slightly, revealing faint starlight above.

Aira guided the ship back into stable alignment with the waves, tension easing from her shoulders as the immediate danger passed. She glanced back toward the others.

"…First sea king," she said.

Kenji sat up and stretched. "First as four."

Ryu stood slowly.

Water dripped from his coat. His knives remained in hand for a moment longer before he sheathed them calmly.

For a few seconds, none of them spoke.

The sea rolled gently beneath them again.

Then Kenji glanced sideways at Soren.

"…You staying?" he asked casually.

Soren met his gaze.

Then nodded once.

"Yes."

Aira smiled faintly.

Ryu looked forward across the dark North Blue horizon.

Four figures stood on the deck now.

Not temporary allies.

Not strangers.

A crew taking shape through battle and shared survival.

Behind them, the storm faded into distant rumble.

Ahead—

A far more dangerous sea waited.
