Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: Beneath the Waves

The storm swallowed the horizon completely.

Rain lashed across the deck in relentless sheets, turning every surface slick and treacherous. Lightning tore through the sky in jagged bursts, followed immediately by thunder that rolled across the sea like cannon fire. The ship rose and fell between swelling waves, wood groaning under the strain.

And beneath it—

Something moved.

Ryu stood at the bow, feet planted wide for balance, rain soaking through his clothes and running down his face in cold streams. His Observation Haki stretched outward in controlled pulses, trying to follow the creature's path beneath the churning water.

It circled.

Large.

Fast.

Curious.

Not yet attacking.

But interested.

Aira held the helm steady despite the violent rocking of the ship. Her arms strained against the force of wind and current, adjusting constantly to keep them angled into the storm rather than caught sideways.

"…Still tracking us," she said through clenched focus.

Kenji wiped rain from his eyes and drewhis blade fully now, steel gleaming under intermittent lightning flashes. "Let it come up," he muttered. "Easier to hit that way."

Soren stood near the mast, one hand gripping a support rope while his gaze followed subtle disturbances in the water's surface. His rifle remained slung across his back—useless in this downpour—but his awareness stayed sharp.

"Depth shift," he said calmly. "It's rising."

As if on cue—

The sea beside the ship erupted.

A massive scaled form burst from the water in a spray of foam and rain, jaws opening wide enough to swallow a small boat whole. Rows of jagged teeth glinted in the lightning as the creature lunged toward the deck.

Kenji moved first.

He leapt forward, blade flashing in a cross-cut aimed at the creature's exposed snout. Armament coated the steel just as they struck, sparks of impact scattering as the blade bit into thick scales. Not deep enough to kill—but enough to hurt.

The creature recoiled with a violent roar, crashing back into the sea and sending a wave surging across the deck.

Aira fought the helm as the ship lurched sideways. "Hold positions!"

Ryu braced against the railing, eyes already searching for the next attack vector. The creature hadn't retreated far. He could feel its presence circling again beneath them, more agitated now.

"Left side," he said.

Soren shifted immediately, repositioning along the deck to maintain balance and visibility. "Faster this time."

The sea bulged.

Then split open again.

The creature surged upward along the port side, body longer than it first appeared — a serpentine form covered in dark armored scales, fin-like protrusions slicing through the water as it twisted toward the deck.

Ryu moved.

He stepped onto the railing and launched forward, meeting the creature mid-lunge rather than waiting for it to strike the ship. His knives flashed with hardened Armament as he drove both blades into the softer scale joints near its upper jaw.

The impact echoed.

The creature thrashed violently.

Ryu released instantly, flipping back toward the deck as its massive head slammed into the hull instead of crushing across it. Wood shuddered but held.

Kenji used the opening.

He dashed along the slick deck and leapt onto a coiled rope near the mast, using it as elevation. From there, he sprang outward and brought his blade down in a precise, haki-coated arc across the creature's exposed eye ridge.

Steel met scale.

This time it cut deeper.

The beast roared — a deep, vibrating sound that seemed to shake the storm itself — before crashing back into the sea with explosive force. Waves surged outward from the impact, rocking the ship violently.

Aira held the helm through it, teeth clenched. "You two done provoking it?!"

Kenji landed lightly despite the motion, grinning through the rain. "Almost!"

Soren moved quickly across the deck, checking structural points where the creature had struck. "Hull intact," he reported calmly. "For now."

Lightning split the sky again.

For a moment, everything froze in stark white light.

Then the sea around them churned harder than before.

Not retreating.

Gathering.

Ryu felt it instantly.

"…It's not leaving," he said.

Below the surface, the creature coiled again — but this time the water moved differently around it. Tighter. More focused. Predatory intent building rather than testing.

Kenji rolled his shoulders, grip tightening on his blades. "Good."

Aira exhaled sharply but steadied herself. "If it hits the hull directly, we'll feel it."

Soren positioned himself near the center mast, ready to stabilize lines or assist where needed. Even without firing, his presence anchored the deck's coordination.

Rain fell harder.

Wind howled.

The sea rose beneath them like a living thing.

Then—

The creature surfaced fully.

Its massive body coiled upward beside the ship, towering over the deck as it reared back, jaws opening in a full, committed strike meant to crush rather than test.

Lightning flashed.

Thunder roared.

Ryu stepped forward.

Kenji beside him.

Aira held the ship steady against impossible odds.

Soren watched for the precise moment.

The storm raged.

And in the heart of it—

The four hunters prepared to bring down their first true sea predator together.
