Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

The story shifts to a crop field where a middle-aged man named Damian Northstar is collecting some plants as he goes back to his house and is preparing a stew and tea. Carrying a cup of tea into his room, where Amber is being tended to and cared for, having treated the bullet wound, her cuts and bandaged them up, cleaned her and given her a breathing mask, he places the tea on the nightstand as he checks the wound. The bleeding has stopped and he gently cleans it up before applying a fresh bandage. Leaving her to rest, he leaves the room. Throughout the day, Damian sits in his recliner, reading a book when he starts to hear Amber waking up. Looking around and starting to hyperventilate, he calms her down and informs her she is safe as she demands to know where she is, but he tells her she is at a safe location, and nobody will hurt her. He calms her down and has her control her breathing so she will not suffer a panic attack. She drinks the tea he brought her as he excuses himself and returns with a bowl of stew for her to eat. She is able to eat it quite fast while apologizing as Damian waves it off.

 Amber Strong: Where are we?

Damian Northstar: My home. Away from the city. Crystal is a dangerous place. It's safer here. Quiet.

Amber Strong: He never showed up.

Damian Northstar: He can't be everywhere. Not all the time. He is but one man fighting a never-ending war inside that city. He means well and is doing the right thing, but he can't save everyone.

Amber Strong: I should not have come here. My boss was right.

Damian Northstar: He knows. He always knew. He just didn't want to upset you. You have a driving spirit, Ms. Strong. I can see why you have that last name. It fits your spirit. your lifestyle.

Gaining some of her strength back, Amber and Damian both bond over their Native American heritage and teaches her about several folklores, one that stands out to her is the legend of the Thunderbird.

Damian Northstar: The Thunderbird is a prominent legend in our culture. A giant, powerful bird that is the source of lightning and thunder. When it flaps its wings, it creates thunder and can create lightning flashes in its eyes. Many tribes see the Thunderbird as a fearsome protector against the forces of evil, a symbol of natural power or even a force that can be destructive and nurturing.

Amber Strong: What do you believe it to be?

Damian Northstar: I believe it can be whatever it sets its sights on. Come. I want to show you something.

Damian guides Amber through the pasture and into the deep forest, where they come upon a well-kept cabin. They enter it as Amber follows Damian. He takes a book from a shelf and the wall opens up. They venture down a wide, spiral staircase into a much larger section of the underground. There, Damian escorts Amber into a room as he turns the power on to reveal it to be a command type center and in the middle is a white and black costume with the symbol of the thunderbird. Amber walks up to it and examines it closely, amazed by its structure.

Damian Northstar: Many brave souls have worn that very same suit, saving countless lives the world can never repay. Unfortunately, many have also died wearing it. I've spent many years cleaning it and getting it back to glory, leaving it there, waiting for the next worthy person to don it next.

Amber Strong: Is that why you brought me here?

Damian Northstar: Part of it. I see so much potential in you, Amber and a lot of spirit. I can tell you want to make the world a better and safer place, but that does not come without a cost.

 Amber Strong: Which is?

Damian Northstar: Leaving behind your normal life and becoming the next Lady Thunderbird.

Amber is silent, not knowing how to reply to that request as she looks back at the suit to consider the offer.

Damian Northstar: You want justice and you want answers. You want to know who the ones are that attacked you and left you for dead. You want to know who sent those men after you.

Amber stays silent as she lets everything he is telling her sink in as she closes her eyes and relives when she was brutally attacked. She can still hear the screeching tires and the sound of crushed metal, she can still feel the blows she took, how she was spit on, punched, kicked, sexually assaulted, she can still feel their dirty hands touching her as they held her hands behind her back, she can still hear the gunshot and the bullet that pierced her. She can still taste the blood and then she opens her eyes to look at the suit again.

 Amber Strong: Teach me everything.
