Chapter 54 - seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 3 – Episode 18: "Truth on the Table"

Amara's POV

By mid-afternoon, the entire restaurant knew something big was about to happen.

Luke sat at the corner table with Margaret, Rose, and Carl. Papers were spread out across the table like pieces of a puzzle that had finally come together.

Marcus hovered nearby pretending to polish glasses.

He wasn't polishing anything.

He was listening.

"Marcus," Rose said without looking up, "you're holding the same glass for five minutes."

Marcus shrugged.

"Investigative polishing."

Margaret smiled slightly.

"Let him stay. Curiosity keeps people sharp."

Luke had the folder open again. The verified audit sat on top.

Hard proof.

Numbers.

Emails.

Signed approvals.

Every page told the same story.

The deal from years ago had been built on manipulated projections and hidden risk.

Luke hadn't sabotaged it.

He had stopped it.

Carl leaned forward.

"This is solid."

Rose nodded.

"The auditor confirmed everything."

Marcus whispered,

"So when do we drop the truth bomb?"

Margaret answered calmly.

"Soon."

Luke looked at her.

"You still think we should go through a journalist instead of releasing it ourselves."

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?" Carl asked.

"Because credibility matters," she replied. "If the story comes from you, people will assume it's defensive. If it comes from an independent investigation, it becomes news."

Rose smiled.

"Smart."

Marcus nodded.

"Very smart."

Margaret slid her phone across the table.

"I already contacted someone."

Luke glanced down.

The name on the screen read:

Daniel Reyes – Investigative Reporter

Rose's eyebrows lifted.

"He's respected."

Marcus leaned in.

"Is he dramatic?"

Rose sighed.

"He's thorough."

Marcus grinned.

"Close enough."

Right then the door opened again.

Marcus turned automatically.

"No media please—"

He stopped mid-sentence.

A tall man walked inside carrying a messenger bag and a camera.

Rose looked at Luke.

"Perfect timing."

The man approached the table.

"Luke Bennett?"

Luke stood.

"Yes."

The man extended his hand.

"Daniel Reyes."

Marcus whispered to me,

"Oh wow that was fast."

Margaret gestured toward the empty chair.

"Please sit."

Daniel opened his bag.

"I read the summary you sent."

He looked directly at Luke.

"If these documents hold up, this could change the entire narrative."

Luke slid the folder toward him.

"They will."

Daniel began scanning the pages.

The restaurant stayed unusually quiet.

Even the customers seemed to sense something important was happening.

Marcus whispered,

"This feels like a courtroom."

Rose nudged him.

"Quiet."

Ten minutes passed.

Daniel closed the folder slowly.

Then he looked at Luke.

"You weren't the villain."

Luke shook his head.

"No."

Daniel leaned back.

"This proves the financial projections were manipulated before the final vote."

Carl added,

"And Luke refused to approve it."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"That decision likely saved investors from losing even more money later."

Marcus pointed.

"Exactly what we've been saying!"

Daniel looked thoughtful.

"Why didn't this information come out earlier?"

Luke answered honestly.

"Because I didn't fight the story."

Margaret added,

"And because powerful people preferred the simpler narrative."

Daniel nodded.

"That happens often."

He tapped the folder.

"I'll need to verify these sources personally."

Margaret smiled.

"You'll find they hold up."

Daniel stood.

"If they do… this article will run tomorrow morning."

Marcus raised both hands.

"Breaking news day!"

Rose smiled.

"For once, good news."

Daniel shook Luke's hand.

"One more question."

Luke waited.

Daniel asked quietly,

"Why build a restaurant after everything that happened?"

Luke glanced around the room.

At the tables.

At the staff.

At the customers enjoying their meals.

Then he answered simply.

"Because food brings people together."

Daniel smiled.

"That might be the best answer I've heard all week."

He left a moment later.

The door closed behind him.

Marcus immediately jumped up.

"That's it?! We just wait now?!"

Rose nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus groaned dramatically.

"I hate waiting."

Margaret chuckled.

"Patience wins wars."

Carl leaned on the counter.

"Speaking of wars…"

He nodded toward the window.

Across the street, the black car was still parked.

Marcus squinted.

"Still watching."

Luke stood slowly.

"Let him watch."

Margaret sipped her tea again.

"Tomorrow will be interesting."

The Next Morning

I arrived at the restaurant early.

Marcus was already inside.

He was staring at his phone like someone watching a sports final.

"Amara!" he shouted. "Come here!"

I rushed over.

"What happened?"

He turned the screen toward me.

A headline filled the display.

"NEW EVIDENCE CLEARS LUKE BENNETT IN FAILED DEVELOPMENT DEAL."

Below it was Daniel's article.

Detailed.

Careful.

Thorough.

Every claim backed by verified documents.

Every timeline explained.

Every manipulated number exposed.

Marcus laughed loudly.

"YES!"

Rose walked in seconds later.

"What's the noise—"

Marcus handed her the phone.

Her eyes widened.

"It's out."

Carl came in behind her carrying tools.

"Morning everyone—"

Marcus spun around.

"Read the news!"

Carl skimmed the article.

Then he smiled slowly.

"Well I'll be."

Luke walked in from the office just then.

Marcus pointed dramatically.

"Hero enters the room!"

Luke raised an eyebrow.

"What did I miss?"

Rose handed him the phone.

Luke read the headline.

Then the first few paragraphs.

The restaurant stayed quiet while he read.

Finally he lowered the phone.

Margaret, who had arrived silently a moment earlier, asked calmly,

"Well?"

Luke exhaled slowly.

"It's accurate."

Marcus grinned.

"Translation: we're winning."

Carl nodded.

"Public opinion will shift fast."

Rose refreshed her tablet.

"Already happening."

She turned the screen toward us.

Social media posts.

News updates.

Financial blogs.

People were discussing the article everywhere.

Marcus leaned over her shoulder.

"Look at that."

Rose read one comment aloud.

"'Maybe Luke Bennett was right all along.'"

Carl chuckled.

"About time."

Luke sat down at the counter.

He looked thoughtful.

Margaret studied him.

"You don't look surprised."

Luke shook his head.

"I just wish the truth had come sooner."

Margaret smiled gently.

"Truth arrives when people are ready to hear it."

Marcus suddenly gasped.

"What?"

He pointed toward the window.

The black car across the street…

Was gone.

Rose noticed too.

"Looks like Evan stopped watching."

Margaret's smile grew slightly.

"Oh no."

Marcus frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Margaret leaned back in her chair.

"He's not watching anymore."

Luke understood immediately.

"He's reacting."

Carl crossed his arms.

"What's his next move?"

Margaret looked toward the door thoughtfully.

"When powerful people lose control…"

She paused.

"They become desperate."

Marcus raised a finger.

"I don't like the sound of that."

Luke stood slowly.

"Then we stay ready."

Rose nodded.

"We've handled everything so far."

Carl added,

"And we're not alone anymore."

I looked around the restaurant.

The team.

The place.

The energy.

For the first time in weeks, hope filled the room.

But somewhere in the city…

Evan Bennett was reading the same article.

And realizing something terrifying.

The man he tried to bury…

Was rising again.
