Seasoned With Love
Season 3 – Episode 17: "The Inspection Game"
Amara's POV
The city inspector arrived at 9:07 a.m.
Marcus saw him first.
He was standing behind the espresso machine, pouring a cappuccino with the kind of focus usually reserved for brain surgery, when the door opened and a tall man with a clipboard stepped inside.
Marcus froze mid-pour.
"Oh boy," he muttered.
The milk overflowed.
Rose looked up from the register.
"What?"
Marcus nodded toward the door.
"Inspection squad."
Rose followed his gaze.
A man in a gray city jacket stood quietly scanning the room.
Clipboard.
Tablet.
Serious face.
Carl leaned over the counter.
"Well," he said calmly, "that didn't take long."
The man walked up to the host stand.
"Morning," he said politely. "City compliance office."
Marcus raised both hands.
"Welcome! Everything here is legally delicious."
The inspector blinked once.
Rose nudged Marcus aside.
"Good morning," she said professionally. "How can we help?"
The inspector glanced down at his paperwork.
"Routine structural and safety review."
Marcus whispered to Carl,
"'Routine' my apron."
Carl smirked.
Luke stepped out of the office just then.
He looked completely calm.
"Good morning," he said. "I'm Luke Bennett."
The inspector nodded.
"Mr. Bennett, we received a request to verify renovation permits and kitchen compliance."
Carl stepped forward.
"I supervised the construction."
The inspector gave him a neutral nod.
"Then you're the person I need to talk to."
Marcus whispered to me,
"I feel like we're about to get graded."
Rose whispered back,
"Relax."
Across the room, Margaret sat quietly at a corner table with a cup of tea.
She hadn't said a word yet.
But she was watching everything.
Luke gestured toward the kitchen.
"Feel free to check anything you need."
The inspector nodded.
"I appreciate the cooperation."
Marcus leaned close to me.
"That's a good sign, right?"
I shrugged.
"I hope so."
Carl walked with the inspector toward the back.
The door swung shut behind them.
For a moment the restaurant felt tense again.
Marcus exhaled loudly.
"Well, if they shut us down I'm stealing the espresso machine."
Rose rolled her eyes.
"They're not shutting us down."
Marcus pointed toward Margaret.
"She's suspiciously calm."
Margaret looked up.
"That's because I've seen this tactic before."
Rose joined her table.
"How many times?"
Margaret smiled slightly.
"Enough."
Marcus leaned in.
"So what happens now?"
Margaret took a slow sip of tea.
"Now Evan waits."
Luke joined the table.
"For what?"
Margaret answered simply.
"For the inspection to scare you."
Marcus raised a finger.
"Too late. Already scared."
Luke chuckled slightly.
Margaret leaned forward.
"But here's the interesting part."
Rose looked curious.
"What?"
Margaret tapped the folder beside her.
"While he's busy trying to pressure you…"
She opened it.
"Our auditor finished verifying the documents."
Luke's eyebrows lifted slightly.
"That fast?"
Margaret nodded.
"I called in a favor."
Marcus grinned.
"I like favors."
Rose skimmed the top page.
Her eyes widened.
"This confirms everything."
Carl returned from the kitchen just then.
He wiped his hands on a towel.
"Inspector's checking electrical panels."
Marcus asked immediately,
"How bad is it?"
Carl shrugged.
"He hasn't found anything wrong yet."
Margaret nodded.
"Good."
Luke looked at the documents again.
"So the numbers are proven false."
Margaret confirmed it.
"Yes."
Rose looked up.
"We could release this today."
Marcus clapped his hands.
"Oh please yes."
Luke thought about it for a moment.
Then he shook his head.
"Not yet."
Marcus blinked.
"…why?"
Luke leaned back in his chair.
"Because Evan expects us to react."
Margaret smiled slowly.
"Exactly."
Rose nodded.
"So we wait."
Carl frowned slightly.
"Wait for what?"
Margaret's eyes twinkled a little.
"For him to make a bigger mistake."
Marcus laughed.
"Oh that man specializes in those."
At that exact moment—
The restaurant door opened again.
Marcus groaned.
"If that's another official…"
But it wasn't.
It was a reporter.
Camera crew behind her.
Marcus pointed.
"Media alert!"
The reporter stepped forward confidently.
"Luke Bennett?"
Luke stood.
"Yes."
"I'm Jenna Park with Channel 8 News. Do you have a moment to comment on the city inspection happening today?"
Marcus whispered loudly,
"That was fast."
Rose whispered back,
"The media loves drama."
Luke stayed calm.
"What would you like to know?"
The camera light flicked on.
The reporter spoke clearly.
"Some investors claim your restaurant may have bypassed safety regulations during renovation."
Carl nearly choked.
"Bypassed—?"
Rose gently pushed him back.
"Let Luke handle it."
Luke looked directly at the camera.
"Our renovation followed every city guideline."
The reporter continued.
"And what about claims that your past business decisions cost workers their jobs?"
Marcus groaned quietly.
"There it is."
Luke answered calmly.
"That situation is more complicated than the headlines suggest."
Margaret watched carefully from her table.
The reporter asked the final question.
"And what do you say to investors who believe you're blocking growth opportunities for the community?"
Luke paused.
The restaurant felt silent again.
Then he answered.
"I believe growth should be built on honesty."
Marcus whispered,
"Oooh that's good."
Luke continued.
"And I believe businesses should serve people, not manipulate them."
The reporter lowered her microphone slightly.
"Thank you for your time."
The crew packed up and left.
Marcus grinned.
"That sounded heroic."
Rose smiled.
"Very diplomatic."
Carl nodded.
"You didn't take the bait."
Margaret stood slowly.
"Well done."
Luke looked at her.
"Now what?"
Margaret walked toward the window.
Outside, across the street…
A black car sat parked.
Marcus squinted.
"Is that…?"
Rose looked closer.
"Evan's driver."
Margaret nodded.
"Of course he's watching."
Luke folded his arms.
"He wants to see if we panic."
Marcus grinned.
"Well he's going to be bored."
Margaret turned back toward the group.
"I think it's time we make our move."
Rose's eyes lit up.
"The documents."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
Luke looked thoughtful.
"You're sure."
Margaret smiled.
"Oh yes."
Carl cracked his knuckles again.
"I've been waiting all day."
Marcus raised a coffee mug like a trophy.
"Let's ruin a billionaire's afternoon."
Rose laughed.
"Marcus…"
Margaret slid the folder toward Luke one more time.
"Release the truth."
Luke picked it up.
For a moment he looked around the restaurant again.
At the team.
At the customers.
At the place they had built together.
Then he nodded.
"Alright."
And somewhere across the street…
Evan Bennett was about to learn something important.
The man he tried to corner…
Had just flipped the board. ☕
