Chapter 22 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 2 – Episode 13: "What We Don't Say"

Amara's POV

Morning in the restaurant usually feels calm.

But today felt… heavy.

Not bad heavy.

Just the kind that tells you something important is about to happen.

Luke was already there when I walked in.

Which was strange.

Because Luke usually arrives exactly on time — not early.

But today he was sitting at the long table with two coffees in front of him.

Waiting.

That alone told me something was going on.

I walked over slowly.

"Okay," I said, sitting down. "You look like someone who rehearsed a speech."

Luke gave a small smile.

"I didn't rehearse."

"That makes me more nervous."

He slid the coffee toward me.

"I needed to talk to you before the day starts."

I studied his face carefully.

"Is everything okay?"

"Yes."

Pause.

"Mostly."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Luke."

He nodded slightly.

"Fair."

He leaned forward, hands clasped.

"Amara, something happened yesterday after you went upstairs."

"Rose came back," I guessed.

Luke blinked.

"You already knew?"

"I know Rose," I said. "Continue."

He nodded.

"She asked me about my past again."

I took a sip of coffee.

"And?"

"And she's right."

I waited.

Luke took a breath.

"There are parts of my life I haven't fully told you yet."

The air shifted a little.

Not tense.

Just honest.

I set my cup down.

"Are we talking about something serious?"

"Yes."

"Dangerous serious or emotional serious?"

Luke almost laughed.

"Emotional."

"Okay," I said. "I can handle emotional."

He studied me for a moment.

"Before the restaurant… before I invested in this place… I walked away from a company my family built."

I blinked.

"You walked away?"

"Yes."

"You didn't tell me that."

"I didn't know how to explain it without sounding like I was hiding something."

"That's not hiding," I said calmly. "That's history."

Luke shook his head slightly.

"It becomes important now."

My stomach did a small flip.

"Why?"

Luke exhaled slowly.

"Because my father is trying to buy the building this restaurant is in."

That landed hard.

I sat back.

"Wait… what?"

"He's working through partners so it doesn't look obvious," Luke said. "But I recognized the structure of the deal."

I stared at him.

"Luke… are you serious right now?"

"Yes."

"And you just found out?"

"Recently."

"And you didn't tell me immediately?"

That question came out sharper than I meant.

Luke didn't react defensively.

"I needed to be sure first."

I crossed my arms slightly.

"And now you are."

"Yes."

Silence settled between us.

Not angry silence.

Processing silence.

I leaned forward again.

"Why would he do that?"

Luke answered honestly.

"Control."

"That simple?"

"That simple."

"And what happens if he succeeds?"

Luke's voice lowered.

"He could change the lease terms. Push us out. Or force us into an agreement."

I stared at him for a moment.

Then I asked the question that mattered most.

"Luke… are you planning to fight him?"

He didn't answer right away.

Which worried me more than anything.

"Luke."

"Yes," he said finally. "But how I fight matters."

I watched him closely.

"You're thinking about confronting him."

"Yes."

"And you think that might affect us."

Another pause.

"Yes."

I exhaled slowly.

"Okay."

Luke looked surprised.

"That's it?"

"That's not small," I said. "But it's also not something we run from."

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

"You're not angry?"

"I'm thinking."

"That's worse."

I smiled a little.

"Relax."

He leaned back slightly.

Then I asked something important.

"Luke… why didn't you trust that I could handle this earlier?"

He answered honestly.

"Because I didn't want your life to become complicated because of my past."

I shook my head.

"Luke, we own a restaurant together. Our lives are already complicated."

That made him smile slightly.

"Fair point."

I softened my voice.

"Here's the real question."

"I'm listening."

"Are you trying to handle this alone?"

Luke thought about that carefully.

Then answered truthfully.

"My instinct says yes."

"And what does the version of Luke that's growing say?"

He looked at me.

"That I should handle it with Amara."

I nodded once.

"Good answer."

He studied my face carefully.

"You're calmer than I expected."

"I'm not calm," I said. "I'm committed."

That hit him.

Then I added quietly:

"But I need something from you."

"Anything."

"No more protecting me from information."

Luke nodded immediately.

"Agreed."

"Even when it's messy."

"Especially then."

We sat there for a moment, letting that settle.

Then Luke said something softer.

"There's another reason this tests us."

"What?"

"My father thinks relationships weaken judgment."

I raised an eyebrow.

"So he's never met me."

Luke smiled.

"That's exactly what Rose said."

I laughed.

"Rose is wise."

Luke leaned forward again.

"If this becomes public… it could put pressure on you too."

I didn't hesitate.

"Then we face it together."

"Together," he repeated.

Later That Afternoon

Rose walked into the restaurant, took one look at both of us, and stopped.

"Oh wow," she said. "Something serious happened."

I sighed.

"Luke's father is trying to buy the building."

Rose blinked.

Then blinked again.

"Of course he is."

Luke shook his head slightly.

"You're not even surprised."

Rose walked over slowly.

"Luke, powerful families don't like losing control."

"That's not comforting."

"It's realistic."

She looked between us.

"Okay. Important question."

"What?" Luke asked.

"Did you two fight about it yet?"

"No," I said.

Rose narrowed her eyes.

"That's suspiciously mature."

Luke smirked.

"We're evolving."

Rose pointed at him.

"I told you he was changing."

Then she looked at me.

"Amara, you good?"

I nodded.

"I am. But we have decisions to make."

Rose folded her arms.

"Well," she said, "sounds like the next chapter just started."

Luke looked at me.

Not worried.

Not uncertain.

Just steady.

And I realized something important.

Every couple gets tested.

But not every couple learns how to stand on the same side of the problem.

Luke and I were learning.

And that might be the strongest thing we've built yet.
