Chapter 47 - 47. Buffling

The morning sun filtered through the thin linen curtains, pouring into the room in long ribbons of gold. Dust motes floated lazily in the light, suspended in the quiet stillness of the apartment. Outside, the city stirred with distant traffic and the muted rhythm of daily life beginning again. Inside, however, time felt slower. Softer.

Jaewon shifted in his chair, suppressing a yawn as he stretched his arms above his head. Sleep still clung faintly to his senses, but the warmth of the sunlight and the smell of fresh coffee gradually pulled him into wakefulness. He rubbed his eyes and let his gaze drift toward the kitchen counter.

Taesan sat there in composed silence, one hand wrapped around a ceramic mug, the other resting loosely against the counter's edge. He was not scrolling through his phone. Not reading. Not working. Simply staring into the dark surface of his coffee as though it held something only he could see.

Jaewon watched him for longer than he intended.

The past few days had felt strangely calm. Too calm. After everything they had endured, arguments, revelations, wounds that had taken months to close, the quiet felt less like peace and more like the eye of something approaching.

"So," Jaewon finally said, breaking the stillness with deliberate lightness, "what's going on in that head of yours today?"

He leaned back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other, attempting his usual casual tone. Yet beneath it lingered unmistakable curiosity.

Taesan did not answer at once. He lifted the mug to his lips and took a slow sip, eyes still lowered. The silence stretched just enough to make Jaewon narrow his gaze.

"You've been quiet since you woke up," Jaewon added, tilting his head. "That usually means one of two things. Either you're plotting something illegal, or you're about to drag me into something complicated."

A faint huff of amusement escaped Taesan. He set the mug down gently.

"You wouldn't guess it if you tried," he said, glancing up with a small, knowing smile. "But I'll give you a hint. Korea."

Jaewon blinked. "Korea?"

He sat up straighter. "What, are you planning on becoming a K-pop idol now? I always knew you had the cheekbones for it. Or is this about launching some luxury skin-care brand? You do have suspiciously flawless skin."

Taesan shook his head, lips curving faintly. "Not quite. But you're circling the idea."

"Oh?" Jaewon leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees. "Then enlighten me."

The humor faded from Taesan's expression. The shift was subtle, but it changed the air between them.

"It's about Joshua," he said quietly. "He's in Korea."

The name alone altered Jaewon's posture. His relaxed demeanor tightened, shoulders squaring as if instinctively bracing.

"Joshua," he repeated slowly. "And why exactly are we talking about him this early in the morning?"

Taesan's fingers traced the rim of his cup. "Because he has been circling us for years. Watching. Interfering. Positioning himself above every situation like he owns it."

Jaewon's jaw tightened. "He always thinks he's untouchable."

"He isn't," Taesan replied evenly. "Not anymore."

A pause followed, heavy but deliberate.

"We're opening a company in Korea," Taesan continued. "And when we do, it will disrupt everything Joshua has been building."

Jaewon stared at him, searching his face for signs of exaggeration. "You're serious."

"Completely."

"You want to just walk into his territory and plant a flag?"

"Not just a flag," Taesan corrected gently. "A foundation."

Jaewon let out a short breath that almost resembled a laugh. "And how do you plan to do that without him noticing? You think Joshua won't see us coming?"

"He will," Taesan admitted. "Eventually. But not immediately."

Jaewon rose from his chair and began pacing slowly across the room, thoughts racing. "Opening a company in Korea isn't some weekend hobby, Tae. There are regulations. Competitors. Investors. Media."

"I know," Taesan replied calmly.

"You're talking about entering one of the most competitive markets in Asia. You don't just appear and take space."

Taesan watched him carefully. "I've been planning this for over a year."

Jaewon stopped mid-step. "A year?"

"I have contacts there. Quiet partners. People who owe me favors. The groundwork is already in motion."

Silence fell again, but this time it was charged with something electric.

"You've been carrying this alone?" Jaewon asked more softly.

Taesan's gaze held his. "I was waiting for the right moment."

"And now?"

"Now Joshua believes we're stagnant. He thinks we're still recovering. That we're cautious."

Jaewon's lips curved faintly. "And we're not."

"No," Taesan said. "We're patient."

Jaewon moved closer, lowering his voice. "What kind of company?"

Taesan's expression sharpened with quiet ambition. "Technology. Infrastructure solutions. Systems that optimize logistics and digital security. Things Joshua's empire depends on but cannot fully control."

Jaewon let out a low whistle. "You're not just competing. You're targeting his pressure points."

Taesan did not deny it.

"And you think we can keep this quiet?" Jaewon asked.

"We will keep ourselves quiet," Taesan corrected. "Low profile. Different identities for initial filings. Indirect investments. By the time Joshua understands what's happening, it will already be operational."

Jaewon studied him for a long moment, something between admiration and disbelief crossing his face.

"You've changed," he murmured.

Taesan tilted his head slightly. "Have I?"

"You used to confront problems head on. Now you're building entire strategies in silence."

Taesan's gaze softened just a fraction. "Some battles are not won with noise."

The room felt smaller suddenly, the sunlight warmer but heavier.

Jaewon stepped closer until they stood only a pace apart.

"And what do you need from me?" he asked.

Taesan held his gaze steadily. "Everything."

The word lingered.

"I need your instinct. Your adaptability. Your ability to read people. Korea will not be forgiving. Joshua will not hesitate."

Jaewon exhaled slowly. "So this isn't just business."

"It never was," Taesan replied.

A faint spark returned to Jaewon's eyes, something bold and restless.

"You're asking me to step into a war."

"I'm asking you to stand beside me."

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Jaewon smiled, slow and dangerous.

"Alright," he said. "Tell me about these resources."

Taesan's eyes darken slightly, the playful edge in his voice fading. "Let's just say, over the years, I've become very good at getting what I need. All those years of... well, you know, scamming, hacking, and everything else? I've picked up a few skills along the way. I've got fake passports, IDs. We can be anyone we need to be to slip in unnoticed."

Jaewon blinks, taken aback. "Wait. What?" He stands up, looking at Taesan more closely. "You've been doing all this... stuff."

Taesan shrugs, the tension between them palpable now. "I had to, Jae. You don't think I was going to sit around and do nothing, did you? Joshua's been playing this game for years, and I had to learn how to fight back." He pauses before adding, his voice softer, "I never wanted you involved after I realized that I loved you. It's the only way to get to him. And Hajun helped me out a lo-"

"What??? He had contacts with you?" Jaewon stroke back.

"Yes."

Jaewon feels a pang of jealousy stir in his chest, but he doesn't show it. "So, Hajun helped you with all of this?" he asks, trying to sound casual, though his words come out clipped. "You were in contact with him all these years?"

Taesan's eyes flicker for a moment, a flash of guilt crossing his features. "Yeah. Hajun's still in the picture. He's the one who helped me with a lot of the...behind-the-scenes stuff. But you—" He looks at Jaewon carefully, his voice dropping a little. "I didn't want you mixed up in it. I didn't want you getting hurt."

Jaewon laughs bitterly, the jealousy growing in his chest. "Right. You didn't want me involved, but you're telling me that you've been working with him all along? While I was out here, clueless?"

Taesan lets out a slow breath, clearly feeling the weight of Jaewon's words. "Jae, it wasn't like that. I just... I had to keep you safe, even if that meant keeping you in the dark."

Jaewon shakes his head, running a hand through his hair. "So, now what? We're going to go to Korea and try to take down Joshua and start this company? Just like that?"

Taesan nods, determination in his eyes. "Exactly. But it won't be easy. We have to be careful and make sure no one knows who we really are. And I'll need your help, Jae. We need to stick together on this. Hajun's still going to help us, but the rest of it... that's all on us."

Jaewon takes a deep breath, still processing everything that's been laid out before him. The weight of Taesan's plan feels heavy, but there's a part of him that can't deny the excitement building inside. The idea of finally getting one over on Joshua, of taking control for themselves, it feels almost too good to be true.

"So," Jaewon says after a long pause, his voice steady now. "What's the plan, then? How do we even begin?"

Taesan gives him a small, approving smile. "We start with the disguises. We'll make sure we're not who we seem to be. We'll get to Korea; keep things low-key. But we'll be ready for anything Joshua throws at us."

Jaewon nods slowly, a spark of something like resolve flickering in his chest. "Alright. Let's do it."

As they continue to plan, Jaewon can't shake the feeling that they're walking into something much bigger than either of them realizes. But one thing is certain: they're in this together. And no matter how dangerous it might get, Jaewon knows there's no turning back now.
