Chapter 46 - 46. No Matter What

"I'm glad," Jaewon said quietly, his voice softer than he intended. "I'm really glad you feel the same."

For a moment neither of them moved.

Taesan's smile was gentle, but there was something bright in his eyes, something almost boyish beneath the composure he usually carried so carefully. He reached up and brushed his thumb along Jaewon's cheek as if confirming he was truly there. Then he leaned forward and pressed a slow, lingering kiss to Jaewon's forehead.

"You have no idea how long I've wanted this," Taesan murmured. His voice had lost its usual edge. "There were nights I thought it would never happen. I kept telling myself to let it go. But I couldn't." His lips curved faintly. "Now that we're here, I'm not letting go so easily."

Jaewon let out a quiet laugh, though his throat felt tight. "Good," he said, his fingers drifting down Taesan's arm in lazy, absent circles. "Because I wasn't planning on letting go either."

The air between them felt warmer now, charged in a way that was no longer tense but alive. Jaewon searched Taesan's face, memorizing every line and shadow as if he feared it might disappear.

"So," he began carefully, "what does this mean for us? We spent so long pretending there was nothing here. We kept stepping around it. And now…"

Taesan lifted a finger and pressed it lightly to Jaewon's lips, silencing him with a playful glint in his eyes.

"It means," he said, leaning closer, "we stop overthinking. We figure it out together."

He brushed his lips against Jaewon's, slow and deliberate. It was not rushed or desperate. It was steady. Certain.

"One step at a time," Taesan added softly. "We already survived the worst of it."

Jaewon closed his eyes and deepened the kiss without hesitation, his hand sliding up into Taesan's hair. There was a trembling relief in the way he held him, as if he still feared waking up and finding the moment gone.

"I'm so damn glad you're here, Hyung," Jaewon whispered when they parted, his voice thick with emotion he did not try to hide. "I don't want to mess this up again."

Taesan rested his forehead against Jaewon's. "You won't," he said firmly. "We both made mistakes. But we're not those people anymore. I've waited too long for us to finally stand on the same side."

Jaewon smiled at that, the weight in his chest easing just enough for him to breathe. His hands slid to Taesan's waist, drawing him closer.

"Then let's make the most of it," he said, the teasing tone creeping back into his voice.

Taesan arched an eyebrow. "Make the most of it?" he repeated, amused. "You really think you can handle that?"

Jaewon grinned, leaning closer so their noses almost brushed. "I can handle you."

"Confident," Taesan replied, his voice lowering slightly. "You were not this bold before."

"Maybe I was just waiting for permission."

Taesan laughed under his breath. "You never needed permission. You just needed courage."

"And I have it now," Jaewon shot back. "Especially if you're staying."

Taesan studied him, something thoughtful flickering behind the humor. "Staying is not the same as standing still, Jae. Being together means work. It means honesty. It means calling each other out when we're wrong."

Jaewon nodded slowly. "I know. I don't want easy. I just want real."

"That," Taesan said, brushing his knuckles along Jaewon's jaw, "I can give you."

They fell into a comfortable silence after that, one filled with small smiles and stolen glances. Jaewon rested his head against Taesan's shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent that had once haunted him in its absence.

"You know," Jaewon said after a moment, "I used to think we missed our chance."

Taesan tilted his head slightly. "And now?"

"Now I think maybe we just weren't ready before."

A faint smile touched Taesan's lips. "Maybe we needed to break first. To understand what it would cost to lose each other."

Jaewon tightened his hold unconsciously. "Don't disappear on me again," he murmured.

Taesan's expression softened completely. He lifted Jaewon's chin so their eyes met.

"I'm not going anywhere," he said. "Not this time."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

The word settled between them with weight. It was not dramatic. It was simple and sincere.

Jaewon let out a breath he did not realize he had been holding. "Good," he said quietly. "Because I don't think I could survive losing you twice."

Taesan brushed a thumb beneath his eye, though there were no tears. "You won't have to."

Jaewon allowed himself a small smile. "You're not getting away that easily, Hyung. I've got plans for us."

"Plans?" Taesan teased. "I thought you were the spontaneous one."

"I can be both," Jaewon replied proudly. "Spontaneous and prepared. It keeps things interesting."

Taesan chuckled. "You think you can keep up with me?"

"I know I can," Jaewon said, his confidence shining through. "Just try me."

They laughed together, the sound lighter than anything they had shared in years. The tension that once defined their interactions had dissolved into something steadier. Warmer.

But slowly, the laughter faded.

Jaewon noticed the shift first. Taesan's smile did not disappear, but it grew more distant, more thoughtful.

"Hyung," Jaewon said carefully, his fingers tightening slightly in Taesan's sleeve. "There's something we haven't talked about."

Taesan looked at him, wary but attentive. "What is it?"

"Joshua."

The name lingered in the air.

Taesan's jaw tightened, almost imperceptibly. "What about him?"

Jaewon hesitated. "Are you still thinking about getting back at him?"

For a few seconds, Taesan did not answer. His eyes grew darker, shadows from old wounds resurfacing.

"Revenge," he said quietly, tasting the word. "I have thought about it." Taesan's voice was steady, but beneath it lay something unresolved. "He betrayed me in ways I cannot just brush aside. He knew what he was doing. He knew how much it would cost me."

Jaewon nodded slowly. "But.... he's.... I'm not defending him. I just…" He exhaled. "I don't want that anger to own you."

Taesan looked away briefly, then back at him. "You think I would lose myself?"

"I think you've fought too hard to rebuild yourself," Jaewon said softly. "I don't want you dragged back into that darkness."

Silence stretched between them again, heavier this time.

"I need him to understand," Taesan admitted at last. "Not because I want to destroy him. But because I refuse to let what he did go unanswered."

Jaewon reached for his hand. "There's a difference between justice and revenge."

Taesan's lips curved faintly. "You sound wiser than before."

"Maybe I am," Jaewon replied with a small shrug. "Or maybe I just care more about what happens to you now."

Taesan squeezed his hand gently. "I won't do anything reckless."

"You promise?"

"Yes." Taesan met his gaze fully. "I won't let hatred decide for me."

Jaewon studied him for a long moment before nodding. "If you decide to confront him, I'm with you. But I'm not going to stand by and watch you tear yourself apart for it."

Taesan's expression softened again, gratitude flickering through his eyes. "You really are on my side now."

"I've always been," Jaewon said quietly. "I just didn't know how to show it."

Taesan pulled him into an embrace then, firm and grounding. "We'll handle Joshua when the time comes," he murmured. "But now, I want to focus on this. On us."

Jaewon rested his chin on Taesan's shoulder. "Then let's build something stronger than whatever he tried to break."

Taesan smiled against his hair. "Together?"

"Together," Jaewon confirmed.

Whatever storms waited ahead, they would face them side by side.
