Chapter 14 - The plague

The silence that followed the encrypted voice was more deafening than the gunfire. Elena stood over the body of the man who wasn't Ochanda, the old Nokia still clutched in her hand he screen glowed 29 Days Remaining.

"It was a trap," Silas whispered, his rifle still aimed at the dead man's chest.

"Elena, we have to move. If he knew we were coming here, he knows where the truck is parked."

"He didn't just know we were coming," Elena said, her voice trembling with a mix of rage and cold realization.

"He wanted me to see thise he wanted me to know that the 'Ledger' I thought was my golden ticket is just a map of dead ends."

She looked at the server racks being unloaded they weren't servers as the Iron Dogs ripped the crates open, they found nothing but scrap metal and old, heavy bricks.

"The Ghost isn't just a man, Silas," Elena said, turning toward the dark water of the harbor.

"It's a system and the Patriarch just gave me the keys to a house with no floor." Suddenly, the Nokia in her hand vibrated. Not a text a call.

The caller ID was blank. She answered.

"Check the pocket of the man on the ground, Elena," the voice said the Patriarch.

"The first lesson of the Luanda family never trust the eyes of a soldier trust the instinct of a mother. Your daughter's 'rabbit' isn't the only thing with a hidden compartment."

Elena knelt back down in the grime she reached into the dead decoy's silk pocket and pulled out a small, glass vial containing a single drop of dark blue liquid.

She held up the vial.

"He wanted me to find this he didn't want the servers. He wanted me to see the Blue Poison."

"What is it?" Silas asked, leaning in.

"My father's legacy," Elena said, her grip tightening on the glass.

"Before the Luo Empire collapsed, my father was working on a synthetic blood stabilizer for rare marrow diseases it was supposed to change the world but then the 'accidents' started. The lab fires the sudden bankruptcies my father died thinking his formula was a failure but look at this, Silas. This is the refined version Ochanda didn't steal our money he stole our soul. He's been selling this on the black market for years, and he's using the Luo ports to ship it."

"Silas," Elena said, her eyes turning to ice.

"Forget the ports he isn't shipping data he's shipping the reason my father's business collapsed. He's shipping the poison."

She stood up and signaled to the Iron Dogs.

"Burn the crates. Leave the body for the police to find we're going back to the truck."

"If that's true," Silas muttered, his eyes hardening.

"then the Ghost isn't just a blackmailer he's a pharmacist for the underworld."

"Let's get to the truck," Elena said, her voice regaining that sharp, imperial edge.

The drive back to the estate was silent, the heavy tires of the truck thrumming a rhythmic beat against the rain-slicked pavement.

Elena sat in the back, her head resting against the window, watching the neon lights of Solana City blur into streaks of color every time she closed her eyes, she saw the decoy's face. She saw the way his eyes went blank when the encrypted voice cut him off.

It was a reminder that in this world, life was the cheapest currency.

When they arrived at the gates, the wreckage from the morning had been cleared.

New guards men with the Luanda lion on their shoulders stood at attention they didn't look at Elena as she passed they looked through her, like she was a ghost.

She headed straight for the basement, for the "War Room." Elder Chen was waiting, his head still bandaged, his face pale under the fluorescent lights.

"Madam, you're back," he said, rising quickly.

"The reports from the docks... I heard it was a decoy."

"It was worse than a decoy, Chen," Elena said, sliding the vial across the steel table.

"It was a message tell me, do we still have the old research logs from my father's 2018 project? The 'Azure' files?" Elder Chen's eyes widened as he looked at the blue liquid.

"The Azure project? Madam, those files were supposed to be destroyed in the fire your father told me he burned them himself to keep them out of the wrong hands."

"Then he lied," Elena said.

"Because Ochanda is holding the bottle. I want you to find every scientist who worked for my father in 2018. If they're alive, I want them in this room. If they're dead, I want to know who signed the death certificates."

"Elena," Silas interrupted, pointing at one of the monitors.

"Look."

A new feed had appeared. It wasn't the ports or the estate. it was a news broadcast from the city's main hospital.

"...a sudden outbreak of unexplained respiratory distress has hit the pediatric ward at St. Jude's. Doctors are baffled by the blue tint appearing in the patients' fingernails. The hospital board, headed by Arthur Ochanda, has issued a statement claiming it is a localized bacterial infection..."

Elena's heart stopped she looked at the tablet dhe looked at the nursery feed where Maya was sleeping.

"Blue fingernails," Elena whispered.

"The stabilization formula... if it's handled incorrectly, it doesn't heal. It starves the blood of oxygen. He's testing it, Silas. He isn't just shipping it; he's running a trial on children."

The old Nokia on the table began to vibrate. No text. No call. Just a countdown timer that had appeared on the screen, ticking down the seconds.

28: 23: 59...

The 30-day deal wasn't just about the ports anymore. It was a race to stop a plague.

"Chen, call the Iron Dogs back," Elena commanded, her voice vibrating with a mother's cold fury.

"Tell them we aren't hitting docks anymore. We're hitting Ochanda's private clinic nd Silas?"

"Yes, Elena?"

"Load the trucks. I don't care if the police are on his payroll. By dawn, St. Jude's hospital will be under Luo protection, or it will be rubble. I am not letting him use children as his laboratory."

She stood up, pulling her hair back into a tight, practical knot.

The "Useless Housewife" was a distant memory. The "CEO" was a mask. What was left was a woman who had seen the bottom of the world and decided she was going to be the one to pull the lever.

"The Patriarch wanted to see if I was a Lion," Elena said, grabbing her coat.

Q"I'm going to show him that a Mother is much more dangerous."
