Chapter 8 - The mole is from second branch

The storage facility was located on the ragged edge of the industrial district, It was far from the chrome and glass of Phoenix Logistics, and even further from the well groomed lawns of the Luo Estate.

This was where Tom kept his secrets the ones too dirty for the penthouse, and too dangerous for the office.

"Tom always told me he was going to 'investor meetings' here," Elena said, her voice tight as the SUV bounced over a pothole. She watched the rusted chain link fence slip by.

"I used to think he was working late to build a future for us. I used to pack him sandwiches." She let out a short, hollow laugh.

The memory of her past self the woman who worried about whether her husband had enough mayo on his turkey sandwich felt like a story she had read about someone else.

"He didn't deserve your kindness, Elena," Silas said, his eyes scanning the perimeter.

The tactical vest he was wearing was a sleek black color that made him look like an extension of the dark interior of the car. "People like Tom see kindness as a resource to be mined they don't stop until the well is dry."

"Then it's a good thing I've found a new source of water," Elena replied, her eyes fixing on Unit 402.

The car came to a stop Silas stepped out first, his hand moving near his sidearm. The air here smelled of wet old oil. It was a graveyard of broken dreams and hidden sins.

"Unit 402," Silas muttered, checking the digital schemes on his tablet.

"According to the logs, it hasn't been accessed since the night you took over the company he was in a rush."

Silas didn't bother with a key he pulled a heavy-duty bolt cutter from the trunk and snapped the padlock with a single, sharp clack.

The roll-up door groaned as he lifted it up, revealing a dark, vast space that felt colder than the air outside.

Elena stepped in, the beam of her flashlight cutting through the thick layer of dust.

It wasn't a storage unit it was a shrine to Tom's insecurity.

Filing cabinets were stuffed with documents, and shelves were lined with trophies Tom had bought for himself awards for "Entrepreneur of the Year" from magazines that didn't exist. A small, fireproof safe was hidden behind a stack of moving blankets in the very back.

"He kept the wine glass in there," Elena said, pointing.

"The one with the DNA but if he was talking to a Ghost, he wouldn't just keep the physical evidence. He'd keep the instructions."

Silas knelt before the safe. "Electronic lock older model he's used a six-digit code."

Elena didn't hesitate. "06-06-19 the date he 'found' me at the gala he thinks it's his lucky day he thinks that's the day he became a King."

"He used my worst nightmare as his lucky number." Elena could not believe.

Silas keyed in the numbers the safe let out a satisfied beep and the heavy door swung open.

Inside was a single, burner-style smartphone, an old, cheap model, and a thick leather journal. Elena reached for the phone, but Silas caught her wrist.

"Wait," he said, pulling a pair of latex gloves from his pocket.

"If the Ghost is as smart as we think, this phone might be rigged or at the very least, it's covered in the only fingerprints the 'Shadow Red' hasn't managed to burn yet."

He carefully lifted the phone and plugged it into a portable decryption hub. On the screen, the loading bar began to crawl.

"While that runs," Elena said, reaching for the journal.

"Let's see what Tom was too afraid to put in a text message."

She opened the leather book the handwriting inside was frantic, a jagged scrawl that mirrored Tom's deteriorating mental state.

As she flipped through the pages, the "Face-Slap" she had delivered in the lobby felt even more justified.

October 14th: "The Lion messaged again he says Elena is getting too comfortable. He told me to make sure she stays away from the finance meetings. I smashed the heirloom vase today hahaa she cried. The Lion said 'Good.' He says she needs to feel small so the Luo power stays bottled up."

January 22nd: "Sandra is worried dhe thinks the Luanda family will find out about Marcus. I told her the Lion protects us. As long as Elena is the 'Useless Wife,' we are invisible."

Elena's hand shook it wasn't just Tom. Every moment of her misery over the last six years had been choreographed. The broken dishes, the missed anniversaries, the "onions" comment it was all a psychological cage designed by someone who knew exactly how the Luo Empire functioned.

"Elena, look at this," Silas said, his voice dropping a series of eight notes .

The decryption hub had finished a single chat log was open on the screen there were no names, only a contact saved as "Alpha."

Alpha: The girl is growing she looks too much like the Patriarc cut her hair keep her out of the sun. If a single photo of her reaches the main Luanda server, you are dead.

Tom: I'm doing my best Elena is suspicious she asked why I don't take Maya to the park.

Alpha: Then break her spirit again use the Ochanda name. Tell her if she leaves, Ochanda will take the child. She's a Luo she'll stay to protect her bloodline. It's their greatest weakness.

Elena felt a cold, white-hot fury ignite in her chest. They had used her love for Maya as the very chain that kept her in the kitchen.

"They knew," Elena whispered.

"They knew who Maya's father was the whole time. The 'Ghost' isn't just a traitor, Silas. It's someone who knows the Luanda family and the Luo family intimately. Someone who was at that gala."

"Elena," Silas said, pointing to the bottom of the safe.

"There's more."

Underneath where the phone had been was a small, clear plastic bag. Inside was a piece of silk a fragment of a white dress, stained with a dark, dried liquid. And pinned to the silk was a small, silver cufflink.

It wasn't a standard cufflink. It was shaped like a shield, with a tiny, microscopic inscription on the back. Elena pulled out a jeweler's loupe from her bag a tool her father had taught her to use when she was ten.

She squinted at the inscription. Her heart stopped.

"Property of the Luanda Second Branch."

"The Second Branch?" Elena gasped. "Silas... that's your branch. That's your family."

Silas took the loupe, his face turning a ghostly shade of white. He looked at the cufflink, then at the fragment of the white dress the dress Elena had been wearing the night she was drugged.

"This cufflink... it belongs to my older brother," Silas whispered, his voice cracking.

"Marcus isn't the only one working for a Ghost. My own brother was the one who helped Tom find you that night. He's the one who's been catfishing Tom."
