Chapter 6 - The hidden Ghosts

The silence that followed Silas's revelation was more deafening than Tom's screams.

It was a cold, heavy blanket that smothered the room Elena stood frozen, her eyes darting from the manila envelope on the floor to Silas's grim expression.

A Nokia phone, the most powerful man in the Luanda Empire, a man who could move nations with a whisper, lived in a digital world of silence.

He didn't use the tools of the modern world, he didn't leave a digital trail he was a shadow that didn't want to be found.

"You're lying," Tom said with a lot of difficulty, his voice sounding like dry leaves falling across the pavement.

Silas's hard grip on him left some marks if anything, his fingers had dug deeper into the soft tissue of Tom's neck.

"He sent me messages! He told me he was watching Elena! He told me to keep her 'fragile' until he was ready!" Tom shouted.

Elena stepped forward, her red heels clicking sharply against the floor, she picked up the manila envelope, her fingers trembling slightly.

"Tom, look at me if the man you were talking to, told you to keep me 'fragile,' he wasn't my daughter's father, he was someone who wanted the Luo fortune to stay weak and stagnant. He was using you as a cage, you just a tool a piece of card he was using to play his hands,"

She turned the envelope over. The DNA results were there, yes99.999998% but as she looked at the "Sender" address on the courier slip Tom had dropped, her blood turned to ice.

It wasn't addressed to the Luanda Sanctuary. It was addressed to a P.O. Box in the industrial district.

"You didn't even notice that the address was a wrong address," she said.

"Silas," she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous octave.

"He didn't send this to your uncle he sent it to an alias."

Silas snatched the paper from Elena's hand, his eyes scanning the address.

"This is an old drop box," Silas hissed.

"It was decommissioned by the Luanda family five years ago. Only someone with high level clearance would know the code to reactivate it."

The realization hit the room like a physical blow, there was a mole, not just in Phoenix Logistics, and not just in the Luo Empire.

There was a traitor deep within the Luanda hierarchy someone who had been catfishing Tom for years, pretending to be the Patriarch to manipulate Elena's life from afar.

"Who have you been talking to, Tom?" Elena demanded, kneeling down so she was eye level with the man she had called husband for six years.

"Every text, every 'instruction' to treat me like a servant... who was it?"

Tom began to laugh a high pitched, uncomfortable sound that echoed off the cathedral like ceiling.

"I don't know! He was just 'The Lion'! He told me he was was the King! He told me that as long as I kept you in that kitchen, I would stay at the top! I didn't care who he was! He gave me the power you were too 'fragile' to handle!"

Elena stood up, a surge of disgust washing over her. She looked the board members, who were now gathered in the corner as if they were scared sheep.

"Elder Chen," she called out.

The old man stepped forward, his face a mask of disappointment as he looked at Tom.

"Yes, Madam CEO?"

"Clear the room," Elena commanded.

"I want the board members out I want the security logs for the last seventy two hours wiped and replaced with a 'training exercise' notice. And as for Mr. Phoenix..." She paused, looking at the man who had tried to pimp her out to someone named Ochanda.

"Don't kill him, Silas that's too easy, take him to the sub basement. I want to know every single message he received I want the phone he used, and then, I want him handed over to the police for the embezzlement charges we discussed. Let him tell his 'WhatsApp Lion' stories to the inmates in the state as convicts."

As the security detail dragged a sobbing, broken Tom out of the room, the boardroom suddenly felt too large.

The first facrwas over, but the victory felt hollow. The enemy wasn't just Tom anymore. The enemy was a ghost who had been watching her sleep for seven years.

Elena walked over to the floor to ceiling window. The rain was finally slowing, leaving streaks of grey against the Solana City skyline.

"He's been grooming me," she whispered.

Silas stepped up behind her, his presence a warm, solid weight.

"The person Tom was talking to... they didn't want the Patriarch to find out about Maya. They wanted to keep her hidden. If the real leader of my family found out he had an heir, he would unify power instantly. Whoever is behind this wants the Luanda Empire to stay divided."

"And they used me as the shield," Elena said, her eyes narrowing.

"They let me suffer for six years so they could keep their secret. They let Maya live in a house with a man who hated her."

She turned to Silas, her gaze as sharp as the diamonds on her brooch.

"You said the Patriarch uses an old Nokia. You said he's not on social media. If he's that disconnected, how do we reach him? How do we tell him that his daughter is being used as a pawn by someone in his own inner circle?"

Silas reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, lurstered silver coin, on one side was a lion, on the other, a red stone the same one from the ring.

"You don't reach him, Elena. You need make enough noise that he has to come to you and Elena, If Tom sent those DNA results to a fake address, the real Patriarch still doesn't know. But the 'Ghost' who intercepted them does. They know we've figured it out they're going to move fast."

"Let them move," Elena said, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across her face. It wasn't the smile of a housewife. It was the smile of a woman who had just realized she wasn't the prey she was the bait.

"I spent six years ironing shirts and scrubbing floors. I know how to handle heat. Silas, I want a full list of everyone who has access to the Luanda drop-boxes. I want to know who Marcus is talking to. And most importantly..."

She picked up the jade seal from the table and pressed it into her palm.

"I want to meet this 'Mr. Ochanda.' If Tom thought he could sell me to him seven years ago, it means Ochanda was part of the original plan. He's the beginning of the thread and I'm going to pull it until the whole empire unravels."

Silas watched her, a look of profound respect and something deeper, something like longing flickering in his dark eyes.

"You're not going to hide Maya?"

"No," Elena said, her voice echoing with absolute authority.

"I'm going to put her in the brightest light possible. I'm going to make her the most famous child in Solana City, if the 'Ghost' wants to take her, they'll have to do it in front of the whole world. And the your 'Red Lion' won't be able to ignore her any longer."

The elevator dinged again. It was Elder Chen.

"Madam," he said, bowing low.

"The press is gathered in the lobby. They're asking about the 'Luo Rebirth.' And there is a man here... a Mr. Marcus. He says he has a legal claim to the Phoenix Logistics equipment."

Elena straightened her charcoal jacket and adjusted her silver brooch. The "Second Choice" was dead. The Empress had arrived.

"Let's go, Silas," she said, walking toward the door. "I have a company to run, a ghost to hunt, and a vulture to pluck."

As she walked out, she didn't look back at the shattered glass on the floor. She didn't look back at the life she had burned down. She only looked forward, into the storm she was about to create.
