Chapter 37 - 37 The Choice

I stood in the middle of the widening cracks in reality. The night wind blew gently, carrying the scent of the living city—but to me, it was merely a distant shadow.

The entity appeared once more, its shadow stretching across the fractured ground. "This is your final choice," it said. Its voice cold, like metal holding heat.

"What choice remains?" I asked, my voice flat.

"To live on as emptiness, or end the contract and vanish from this world entirely," it replied.

I lowered my gaze. No emotion, no fear, anger, or sorrow. Only awareness that the world waited for this decision. I knew if I failed, the cracks would widen, and the world would collapse. If I succeeded, I would remain a permanent shadow—the nameless.

This choice is not for me… it is for everyone.

I stared at the chain on my wrist. Its heat penetrated my skin, burning the desire to save myself. Yet I knew every moment of delay, the cracks grew deeper.

Around me, the city's shadows trembled. Shadows of humans, light, buildings—all seemed to await this decision. No one knew I was here; no one would know this sacrifice was made for them.

I drew a deep breath, a moment that felt like eternity. Then, I raised my hand, touched the chain of the contract. White light exploded, illuminating the spreading cracks. I felt a powerful pull into the contract itself.

"This… is the price of my sacrifice," I whispered.

The entity nodded, satisfied. "You have chosen the right path. The world will survive, but you will not return."

I closed my eyes. In an instant, the cracks vanished, light engulfed everything, and I felt a presence removed from the world—nameless, a shadow of sacrifice without a name.

The world was safe. I… was gone.
