Chapter 32 - The Spiritual Recession

The High Priestess Valerica did not use a sword to strike back. She used a Currency Devaluation.

By the following dawn, the bells of the High Cathedral didn't chime; they groaned. Across the Capital of Oros, the very air began to thin. The "Sun-Catchers" atop the spires, which usually bathed the streets in free golden light, dimmed to a sickly, expensive amber.

[SYSTEM ALERT!] [Global Event: 'The Great Tithe-Sanction' Initiated.] [Condition: The Church has raised the 'Cost of Grace' by 400%.] [Effect: Standard prayers now yield 0.2 Karma. Spiritual Inflation is at an all-time high.]

Kaelen stood on the Academy balcony, watching the chaos below. In the streets, commoners were falling to their knees, desperately chanting prayers that no longer reached the Heavens. Their "Spiritual Credit" was being drained by the second just to maintain their basic vitality.

"She's suffocating them," Elara whispered, her face pale as she clutched her holy symbol. "She's draining the city's faith to starve you out, Kaelen."

"She's not just draining them, Elara," Kaelen said, his eyes cold and analytical. "She's forcing a Liquidity Crisis. If no one can afford to 'buy' Grace, they'll have to sell their souls to the Church's emergency high-interest relief funds."

[NOTIFICATION] [Current Debt Balance: -999,996,160,000 KP] [Market Warning: Your 'Bundled Gratitude' assets are losing value due to the Recession.]

"Kaelen," Alaric rasped, stepping out of the shadows. His black-static skin was pulsing aggressively. "The Golden Guard... they're starting to shake. The 'Restructured Grace' you gave them is being attacked by the Church's central servers. They're being flagged as 'Illegal Tenders'."

"Then it's time to move from 'Refinancing' to 'Direct Investment'," Kaelen said.

The Breadline of Souls

Kaelen descended to the Academy's main gate. A massive crowd of students and lower-tier priests had gathered, their faces gaunt. They were holding "Grace-Vials" that had run dry.

"Saint Kaelen!" a young girl cried out, her eyes sunken. "The Church says our family's Merit is insufficient! They've cut off our life-link!"

Kaelen didn't offer a prayer. He didn't offer a miracle. He reached into his robe and pulled out a shimmering, dark crystal—a Compressed Karma Bond he had forged from the Senior Auditor's "Inconclusive" report.

"The Church tells you that you are bankrupt," Kaelen's voice boomed, amplified by his [False Saint's Halo]. "They tell you that Grace is a luxury you can no longer afford. But I tell you... Grace is a Dividend, and you are the Shareholders!"

He slammed his cane into the ground.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: The Sovereign's Air-Drop (Lv. 1)] [Action: Distribute 50,000 KP of 'Bundled Gratitude' to the crowd.] [Strategy: Creating a 'Secondary Market' for Faith.]

Waves of violet-tinted light exploded from the cane. It wasn't the Church's pure white light; it was warmer, heavier, and far more potent. As the light hit the crowd, their dry Grace-Vials didn't just fill—they cracked under the pressure of the sudden influx.

[NOTIFICATION] [Consumer Confidence: SKYROCKETING!] [New Followers Acquired: 450 Students, 12 Professors.] [Passive Income: +8,000 KP/Hour (Transaction Fees on the New Currency).]

"He's giving it away for free!" a professor gasped, his mana-core revitalizing instantly.

"Not for free," Kaelen whispered to himself, his eyes scanning the ledger. "I'm just giving them a Sign-On Bonus."

The Hostile Takeover

In the High Cathedral, Valerica watched the golden mapping-pool in her sanctum. The white dots representing the Church's influence were turning violet at an alarming rate.

"He's 'shorting' our Tithe-Defense," an assistant priest whispered, trembling. "He's issuing his own currency, Your Eminence. He's calling it... 'Sovereign Grace'."

Valerica's knuckles turned white as she gripped the edge of the pool. "He thinks he can print his own Karma? He has no 'Reserve Gold'. He has no 'Divine Backing'. He's a bubble waiting to burst."

"Actually, Your Eminence," the priest swallowed hard. "He's backed his currency against... you."

"What?"

"He's told the people that every 'Sovereign Grace' coin is a direct claim on the Church's hidden vaults. He's basically told the entire Kingdom that if they follow him, they can collectively Audit us."

Valerica's eyes flared with a terrifying, blinding light. "He wants an Audit? Fine. We'll give him the Grand Inquisition."

The Debt-Collector's Smile

Back at the Academy, Kaelen felt the shift in the atmosphere. The "Spiritual Recession" hadn't broken his followers; it had turned them into a hungry mob of creditors.

[TOTAL DEBT UPDATED: -999,996,152,000 KP] [Notice: You have triggered a 'Bank Run' on the Holy Church.]

"Kaelen," Seraphina said, walking up to him through the cheering crowd. Her expression was one of pure, unadulterated awe. "You've just started a revolution. But you know what happens next, don't you? They won't just send Auditors. They'll send the Redeemer."

"Good," Kaelen said, watching as the first 'Sovereign Grace' coins began to circulate through the hands of the students. "I've been looking for someone with a high enough 'Soul-Value' to pay off my next billion."

He looked at Alaric and gestured toward the city gates.

"The recession is over, Alaric. Now... let's go collect the interest."

Kaelen has effectively crashed the Church's monopoly by issuing his own "Sovereign Grace." But the Church is about to unleash its ultimate weapon—the Redeemer—to forcibly "Liquidate" Kaelen's new bank.
