Chapter 36 - The Foreclosure of the Soul

The walk from the Royal Mint to the High Cathedral was no longer a pilgrimage; it was a Collection March.

Kaelen moved through the streets of Oros, his footsteps echoing in a city that had become a silent, frozen ledger. Above, the four Seraphim Auditors hung like golden vultures, their eyes unblinking as they monitored the "Collateral"—the 100,000 souls Kaelen had tethered to his own survival.

"You're playing a dangerous game, Kaelen," Seraphina said, her hand tight on the hilt of her blade. Her own soul was part of that tether, and she could feel the cold, mathematical pulse of the Bank humming in her veins. "If your concentration slips for even a second, those Auditors will 'Delete' us all to cut their losses."

"Then don't let me slip," Kaelen replied, his eyes fixed on the cathedral doors.

Beside him, the Redeemer lurched forward. The warrior was missing an arm from the Auditor's edit, but the wound didn't bleed; it simply leaked trails of black code that hissed as they hit the marble. Behind them, Alaric moved in the shadows, a living virus waiting for the final breach.

The Sanctum of the Bankrupt

The doors of the High Cathedral didn't open. They were Locked by Lien.

Kaelen raised his rowan cane. "By the power of the Sovereign's Ledger, I declare this property in default. Valerica, your mortgage on the Divine is up. Open the doors, or I'll tear down the walls and charge you the demolition fee."

Silence. Then, the heavy oak and iron doors groaned, turning into a translucent, sickly grey. They didn't open; they rotted.

Kaelen stepped inside. The air didn't smell of incense or lilies anymore. It smelled of Audit-Dust—the scent of something that has been completely stripped of value.

At the altar, High Priestess Valerica stood alone. She wasn't wearing her golden robes. She was draped in a shroud of "Negative Equity." Her skin had turned the color of ash, and her eyes were two hollow zeros.

[TARGET: Valerica (Bankrupt Status)] [CURRENT DEBT: ERROR - CALCULATION IMPOSSIBLE] [Condition: The 'Debt-Void'.]

"You think you've won, Subject 001?" Valerica's voice was a dry rattle. "You think you can just 'reorganize' the Heavens? The Bank doesn't accept mergers with the likes of you. They only accept Sacrifice."

She raised her hands, and the floor of the cathedral began to dissolve into a swirling, black vortex. It wasn't magic. It was a Total Asset Write-Off.

"I have defaulted on my own life," Valerica laughed, a jagged, terrifying sound. "I've sold my past, my present, and my future to the Void just to ensure you have nothing left to seize. If I can't be the High Priestess, I'll be the Black Hole that swallows your new currency!"

The Liquidation Fight

The vortex expanded. Everything it touched—the pews, the pillars, even the Golden Guards—was reduced to raw, unallocated data and sucked into Valerica's chest. She was becoming a Singularity of Debt.

[WARNING!] [The Debt-Void is consuming your Collateral!] [Market Crash Imminent: -500,000 KP per second!]

"She's trying to force a 'Total System Failure'!" Seraphina shouted, struggling to stay on her feet as the wind of the void pulled at her.

"She's trying to commit insurance fraud," Kaelen hissed, his violet eyes glowing. "She thinks if she destroys everything, the Bank will just reset the sector and she'll be free. Not on my watch."

Kaelen didn't retreat. He sprinted toward the vortex.

"Redeemer! Brace the edges! Alaric! Inject the payload!"

The one-armed Redeemer slammed his bone-white blade into the floor at the edge of the vortex, acting as a physical anchor. Alaric vanished into the shadows and reappeared behind Valerica, his hands turning into jagged claws of System Virus. He plunged them into her back.

[CRITICAL INTERACTION!] [Virus meets the Debt-Void.] [Result: Forced Audit of the Void.]

Valerica screamed as the virus began to categorize her "Nothingness." Kaelen reached her, his Breaker's Omen ring glowing with a light so dark it was visible against the black hole.

"You can't default if I Buy the Void, Valerica!" Kaelen roared.

He grabbed her throat. His ring made contact with her ashen skin.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: Hostile Takeover (Ultimate Form)] [Action: Absorb the 'Debt-Void' into the Sovereign's Ledger.] [Warning: This will increase your Total Indebtedness to 'Intergalactic' levels!]

"Do it!" Kaelen screamed at the System.

The cathedral was consumed by a blinding flash of violet and black. The sound was like a trillion coins hitting the floor at once.

The New Balance

When the light faded, the cathedral was a shell. The altar was gone. The vortex was gone.

Valerica was on her knees, her skin no longer ash, but a dull, grey stone. She was a Static Asset—a statue of a fallen priestess. She was no longer a person; she was a physical record of a bad debt, frozen forever in Kaelen's collection.

Kaelen stood over her, his chest heaving. His white robes were scorched black. He looked at his hands, where violet veins now pulsed visibly.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION] [Transaction Complete.] [You have successfully acquired 'The High Priestess' as a Non-Performing Asset.] [TOTAL DEBT UPDATED: -15,500,000,000,000 KP]

"Fifteen trillion," Kaelen whispered, a cold, terrifying laugh escaping his lips.

He looked up. The four Seraphim Auditors were descending, their golden wheels spinning slowly. They didn't point their pens at him. They bowed.

"Subject 001," they droned in unison. "You have absorbed the liability of this Sector. You are no longer a Debtor. You are the Regional Governor of Debt."

Kaelen turned to his followers—to the terrified students and the battle-worn Seraphina. He looked at the Redeemer and Alaric. He wasn't their Saint anymore. He was their Owner.

"The Church is closed," Kaelen announced, his voice vibrating with the weight of fifteen trillion souls. "The Bank of Oros is under new management."

He looked at the horizon, where the distant lights of other kingdoms flickered.

"And I think it's time we checked the credit scores of our neighbors."
