Chapter 26 Part 2 Drill Sergeant Girlfriend
They hurried to the hospital and found the ward. Nearing the door, Qi hesitated. Aunt was puzzled; he explained, "If both mother and daughter are inside and I walk in, it's too awkward."
Aunt understood. "I'll go in, bring Beigong out, and then we'll find Xu Tiejun." Qi nodded and waited. Soon Aunt appeared with Beigong. Qi lowered his head, not knowing how to face her; her reaction wrong-footed him. She grabbed his arms, tear-streaked: "Sister Jingyi says you can save my dad is that true?"
Qi didn't know what to say. Aunt acted fast, leading them to the deputy director's office.
At the door, she turned. "You two wait here. I'll talk to your Uncle Jun." She went in; Qi could hear faint voices inside, but nothing stuck he only watched Beigong, who stood with head bowed, sobbing softly.
"Beigong… about last night…" he ventured.
She shook her head. "I didn't tell my mom you're my classmate. And I didn't see anything."
Qi hadn't expected this. Then she added, "I only want my dad safe. For the rest, do whatever."
He grabbed her shoulders. "I truly didn't know Sister Feng was your mom."
She looked up, blank. "What difference would it make? She does what she does. Can I change it?"
Qi lowered his head. "Fine you can't change your parents. But you can change yourself."
She stared, surprised. "Change myself? What do you mean?"
He looked up suddenly. "I slept with your mom. Don't you want to beat me up?"
She paused. "Do you want me to?"
"You're right… If you were the old Beigong, you'd be chasing me with a cleaver."
She gave a bleak laugh. "I get it you feel guilty."
"Exactly." He gazed at her; his heart twisted. Only now did he realize he had a strange budding feeling for her. He hadn't seen it until she stood there, numb, in front of him.
"If I beat you up, will you feel better?" she whispered.
He nodded quickly. She kicked him straight in the crotch. He crumpled, wordless in pain, and her fists rained down. Qi didn't dodge each blow eased his inner ache.
When she finally stopped, breathing hard with hands on her knees, he was battered and bruised, but oddly relieved. He smiled weakly. "Still won't hit the face?"
"People will see," she said, and actually smiled then her face darkened. "If you touch my mom again, I'll castrate you."
Qi grimaced. "Even at knifepoint, I wouldn't. But if you're like this, you'll struggle to find a boyfriend."
"None of your business," she shot back.
Just then, Aunt emerged, winking with a smug smile. Uncle Jun followed, on the phone and looking resigned. Qi and Beigong exchanged a glance and both smiled "It's done."
That night, the hospital performed the surgery on Beigong's father. It was a success.
After the local legislative meetings, the city government reshuffled and Father smoothly took the mayor's seat. The change in status quickly impacted the family. For Qi, the most direct effect was a surge in suitors around Aunt. She had always been a beauty; in youth, admirers had been plentiful. They'd dwindled as she aged, but after Father's promotion, the curve shot up again. For two months, Aunt spent half her time ferried by matchmaker aunties to restaurants and hotels for introductions. Even Father got involved, carving out time to introduce Aunt to an unmarried mid-level official assigned by the provincial committee. As a result, Qi hardly saw Aunt for a while.
Without Aunt's supervision, he had hoped to slack off read and nap at home. He didn't expect Beigong to replace Aunt as his drill sergeant. She dragged him out at dawn to run, then again after dinner. Weekends were no escape calisthenics in the morning, swimming in the afternoon, following him everywhere. If he balked, she used her fists. Qi could only chalk it up to his own cocoon his actions had spun this trap.
Since her father's operation succeeded, Qi, mindful of their financial hardship, begged Aunt to find a work-study job for Beigong. For Aunt, it was nothing. The cultural bureau's plaza exercise leaders who led dance and aerobics in neighborhoods were largely temps and volunteers, with only a small number of civil service positions. As a sports-loving girl, shepherding a group of older ladies through aerobics was natural for Beigong. Though young, below the usual hiring age, Aunt's influence had grown with Father's status; with a decisive word, she placed Beigong into the job.
Pay was hourly. She only needed to appear before school and after school to lead dance and aerobics for the allotted sessions, earning two class hours' worth each day. The pay wasn't high but it was steady.
Grateful, Beigong came to "take Aunt's lead," and willingly became Aunt's enforcer against Qi alone. Outside of class was bad enough, but Aunt seemed to like Beigong especially and even gave her a phone. At school, she was like Qi's shadow. Any misstep, Aunt heard first; then Mother. Finally, Beigong enacted "immediate justice" per Aunt's instructions. For two months, Qi lost his personal freedom completely.
With the two always together, classmates eventually paired them up. Qi, the "mayor's son," was dubbed "Little Young Master," a nickname he detested. Correspondingly, Beigong was called "Little Wife." Unlike Qi, she took it in stride. Together, they became "the little couple."
It would have been tolerable if it were only other students, but even Qi's only best friend, Zhou Yi, started calling them that. Enraged, Qi threatened to cut ties, but the normally low-key Zhou showed a sly side: "Friends are like clothes; wives are like limbs. Now that you have a girl, a guy like me isn't needed." Qi was left speechless.
