Chapter 26 Part 1 Saving Beigong's Father
Lunch was cooked by Aunt. Even though Qi had sincerely apologized to Mother, she still looked puffed-up with anger. Yet to Qi it felt novel this angry expression was usually reserved for Father, and now it was turned on the son.
Aunt skillfully explained to Mother that Qi had offended a classmate, so he was afraid to go to school and begged for the mother's understanding. She then added that, as Aunt, she would immediately help resolve the issue, so Mother should rest assured. Until it was solved, it would be better for Qi to rest at home.
In this way, the internal family conflict between Qi and Mother was temporarily eased. Then Aunt smoothly mentioned the "rumor" she had heard at work about Father's imminent promotion. Mother immediately smiled. For many women, a rise in status satisfies a vast vanity; Qi wasn't surprised by her reaction. With Father's steady rise, the chance of divorce grew smaller. Qi had once wondered if divorce could break the "facial fate" that seemed to cling to Mother, but this new reality made that impossible. Mother had her vanity, and without Father's love she still clung to the title of "the mayor's wife" giving that up would be worse than death for her.
After lunch, Mother cleaned the dishes while Qi walked Aunt to the parking lot and asked why she had suddenly come. "Last night when you came home looking like that, I was scared. I called several times this morning no answer. Then I called your school and they said you hadn't shown up. I got worried, so I came." She kissed him and drove off.
Qi returned home to help Mother tidy up, then hid in his room with a book all afternoon something he hadn't done for a long time. Near dusk, Father called to say he wouldn't be home for dinner. Mother hung up, face dark, and sat on the couch. Qi sat beside her and comforted her quietly.
"Mom, try to take it easy. Since you've accepted Second Aunt, try not to dwell on it. Dad spending more time there for a while is normal. Don't forget, you're his legal wife. In ancient times, a woman like Second Aunt would be just a concubine no match for the official wife. Back then, a concubine had to pay respects to the wife."
Mother snorted a laugh. She glanced at him with a smile in her eyes. "You brat, you drove me up the wall this morning, and now you're sweet-talking?"
"I'm not just smoothing things over. About Second Aunt don't take it to heart. If you keep it all inside, you'll only get mad. You're a beauty, Mom don't get angry or you won't look as pretty. If you're not pretty, Dad will run to Second Aunt even more. On the contrary, if you stay generous and don't fuss over them just with your figure and face you'll outshine her. Dad will come back to your side sooner or later."
"Shoo, shoo only saying nice things." Mother rolled her eyes then even blushed a bit.
She soon brought up Qi's not going to school. "Which classmate did you offend so badly you don't dare go?"
Since Aunt had decided to help solve it, Qi felt steadier now, and he half-truthed, half-lied: "It's that Beigong Lingyu again."
Mother was surprised. "Still her? Didn't I tell you not to provoke that girl? Are you pestering her? Puppy love is common now I won't fence you in. But if she doesn't want it and you keep bothering her, that's on you."
Qi gave a bitter smile. In his mind: Me pestering her? It's always been her pestering me. I just had the rotten luck to buy sex from her mom so I'm in the wrong. He could hardly tell Mother that, so he nodded along meekly.
Their conversation was cut off by the landline. It was Aunt. After a moment, she asked for Qi.
"Qi, come out a moment," Aunt said.
"What's up?"
"Same as you Beigong didn't go to school today. I went to look where you said; the shop was closed. I asked around the hostesses said her dad took a turn for the worse. Mother and daughter went to the hospital."
"Then why me?"
"I called a friend at the hospital he's critical and needs surgery now. They can't afford it. The hospital is firm: no money, no operation. Word is the mother and daughter are desperate."
"What can I do?" Life or death trumped his own troubles. Qi's heart went to Beigong's father.
"Are you dumb? This is a chance! If you help them through this, you think she'll still bother you? Never mind you slept with her mom even if you slept with her too, she'd have nothing to say." Aunt was blunt.
"But…" Qi looked at Mother and covered the receiver. "That's a lot of money. Where would we get it?"
Aunt laughed. "Don't worry about that. If you want her to owe you, you must be there. Are you coming or not? I can get it done."
Qi had no choice. "Okay, I'm coming."
He told Mother: "Aunt asked me to come out." Mother asked, "Is it about your classmate?" He lied while pulling on his coat: "Aunt says if I explain, it'll resolve. Don't worry."
He rushed out; Aunt's car waited by the curb. He jumped in. "You're kidding where do we get the surgical money?"
Aunt was confident. "Who said you need to pay? Your dad's cautious with money he wouldn't put up funds. I have another way to get the hospital to do the surgery. You know which hospital, right? The First People's Hospital. Don't you remember who's there?"
"Uncle Jun!" Qi blurted.
