The bracelet felt heavier once they stepped back into the night.
Not physically. The metal around Julian's wrist was light enough that he could almost forget it was there if he didn't look directly at it. But awareness worked differently than weight. Every time he shifted his hand, the bracelet moved slightly against his skin, reminding him of the quiet room, the table, and the small sound the clasp had made when Lucian closed it.
They walked out of the building without speaking.
The street outside was calm in the way cities often became late at night, when most of the noise had faded but the place was still very much awake. A few lights burned in the upper floors of nearby buildings. Somewhere farther down the block a restaurant door opened and closed, letting out a brief wave of laughter before the sound disappeared again.
Lucian moved ahead with his usual steady pace.
Julian followed.
Neither of them mentioned the bracelet.
