Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

There were a few things in life Naruto really couldn't stand. One of them was being stuck alone in the Watchtower with Batman, who had a bad habit of asking the same questions about Naruto's powers again and again. Another thing he hated was people who screwed over their friends or family without a second thought. And right near the top of the list was being forced to wait around, which was exactly what was happening right now.

The twenty two year old blond member of the Justice League was perched on top of a massive sign that proudly read "Welcome to Blüdhaven." From where he sat, he could see the highway stretching out below, packed with cars speeding past each other. Horns blared nonstop, engines roared, and the whole place felt loud and restless. Naruto checked the time again and sighed, already debating whether it was worth sticking around another minute.

Being part of the Justice League sounded impressive, and the pay was decent on paper, but it was nowhere near enough to live comfortably. Some of the other members didn't seem to worry much about money at all, while Naruto constantly had to think about rent, food, and random expenses that kept piling up. Considering how often they put their lives on the line to save cities and stop world ending threats, you'd think the paycheck would be better. Sadly, it wasn't.

Because of that, Naruto took on side jobs whenever he could. As a gifted human with the power to create anything he could imagine, his skills were useful in all kinds of situations. People were willing to pay him quietly and quickly, and he didn't ask too many questions as long as no one innocent got hurt.

Some Justice League members looked down on him for it, acting like it went against what they stood for. Others, especially the ones struggling just like him, had started doing the same thing. That need for extra cash was the whole reason Naruto was sitting on a sign in Blüdhaven tonight. Night Boy ( aka The Nightwing) had contacted him and asked to meet here at exactly 11 pm.

Now it was already 11:04, and there was still no sign of Batman's former sidekick.

Naruto was just about to stand up, annoyed and ready to fire off a heated text, when he heard the sound of someone landing behind him.

He turned his head and spotted Night Boy in his usual black suit, the blue bird symbol clear on his chest as he moved to sit down beside him.

"I was just about to head out," Naruto said, pulling one leg up and resting his arm on it. Night Boy didn't reply right away. He stayed quiet, eyes fixed on the traffic far below, taking a moment to collect his thoughts before saying anything at all.

"Thanks for waiting," Night Boy said at last. "So… what kind of jobs do you usually take?" He still wasn't looking at Naruto, his eyes fixed somewhere far off in the distance.

Naruto frowned at that. The vibe felt off. He wouldn't say they were super close friends or anything, but whenever they teamed up before, things were usually pretty relaxed. Jokes, banter, easy teamwork. Seeing Night Boy this stiff and serious, even with the mask hiding most of his face, made Naruto uneasy.

"I'll do just about anything as long as it's not illegal and the pay's good," Naruto said honestly. "Why? What are you trying to get me into?"

Night Boy let out a slow breath and finally turned his head to look at him. "I need to use your skills," he said, keeping his words frustratingly vague.

Naruto nodded, feeling a small wave of relief. At least it didn't sound like some messed up crime. "Alright. I'm guessing you already know how my powers work," he started, but stopped when Night Boy shook his head.

"Not those skills," Night Boy said. "I've heard you've been… pretty popular with some of the women up in the Watchtower."

Naruto didn't blush or look embarrassed. Instead, a small grin tugged at his face. "I wouldn't put it like that," he replied. "But yeah, I've enjoyed spending time with a few coworkers. Still doesn't answer my question though. What do you actually need me to do?"

Night Boy hesitated for a second before speaking again. "You know Barbara, right? She goes by Oracle now."

Naruto nodded. He'd met her a couple of times and remembered her being sharp, friendly, and way smarter than she let on.

"We dated a few years back," Night Boy continued. "Long story short, she cheated on me. With Batman." He paused, then added quietly, "She even got pregnant. Lost the baby not long after. All of that happened before Joker attacked her and took away the use of her legs."

Naruto just stared at him, eyes wide. This was the first time he'd heard anything like that. It didn't match the Barbara he knew at all. And Batman? That part especially messed with his head. From everything Naruto had seen, Batman was strict, distant, but protective of his people. The idea of him doing something like that to his own partner's girlfriend felt wrong, almost unreal.

After a moment, Naruto finally spoke. "You wouldn't be telling me all this unless it mattered," he said slowly, locking the information away in his mind.

"I tried to let it go and move on with my life without them, but I still think about it even now." He said with a hint of anger. Naruto was beginning to think maybe he should've said no to coming here, with the direction this was going he was afraid he'd put a hit out on Oracle and the Dark Knight.

"I need your help to get back at them." Naruto let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding. Ok, he wasn't planning a murder, he could work with this...maybe. "I want you to get close to Barbara. Make her feel for you what I felt for her, then destroy it." He said, gripping the metal below them with enough force the blond thought for sure he'd rip through it.
