Chapter 20 - THE SECRETS WE KEEP

Genevieve took a deep breath and nodded. Robellia shut her eyes and began to chant in a language foreign to Genevieve. A cold breeze swept by her, making Genevieve shiver slightly. She clearly remembered the windows sealed shut. Robellia's chanting grew louder, and so did the cold wind. Genevieve was in a state of shock and fear. She was ready to stop Robellia, but the warning Robellia said just scared the hell out of her even more. Robellia tossed her head back, her eyes open as she stared at the ceiling. She was practically yelling the incantations now. The flames on the candles grew wilder. Genevieve could feel the room spin; she felt as though she was at the centre of a hurricane, "Liya!"

And just as she thought things couldn't get any worse, the shadows within the dark room started to form into human figures. The entire room was filled with people, all chanting with Robellia, arms raised, looking at whatever was beyond that ceiling. Genevieve panicked as she tightened her grip on Robellia. The wind was pulling their arms apart. Genevieve shut her eyes. She needed to focus. She held onto Robellia tightly and focused on her pulse. She could feel Robellia's pulse through her palms, and that was all she needed to keep sane." I've got you, Liya. I am not letting go." Genevieve whispered.

The wind stopped. Genevieve had her eyes shut tight. The room had gone eerily quiet. All she could feel was the cold air and Robellia's grip weakening. Genevieve opened her eyes, "Liya!" she called, looking at the weak robellia who was now facing the ground, her messy hair hiding away her delicate face. "Liya, please answer me, you are scaring me right now." Genevieve was on the verge of tears. Robellia released Genevieve's arms and looked up at her. Her eyes had gone back to the lovely color of brown that Genevieve always liked. Robellia hurriedly looked over the bed. She scrambled off the floor and rushed by Roselyn's side. She let out a sigh of relief as she felt her mother's strong pulse.

Genevieve got up and slowly walked over to Robellia's side. She let out a huff of pure shock. Roselyn looked better. Her once pale complexion and worn-out face were starting to look more alive. She could even notice that her few strands of grey hair had totally disappeared. Robellia kissed her mother's knuckles. "What just happened?" Genevieve couldn't hold it in for much longer.

Robellia turned to her, "Gene, I...." Both girls turned to the door as they heard a knock. "Liya! gene!" it was madame sino. They quickly scrambled to put the things on the floor away. "Girls!" Genevieve rushed to the door as Robellia hid away the rest of the stuff. Making sure everything was okay, Genevieve opened the door, and sure enough, Madame Sino stood right there. She looked at both girls with a puzzled expression. They seemed to be panting and very unsettled, as if they had just done something wrong.

"What happened in here?" she walked in, looking worried. "I thought I heard something, so I came to check on you. I couldn't find Gene in her room, so I guessed she'd be here. How is she?" She walked over to Roselyn. She looked surprised as she got closer. Madame Sino looked at the girls before checking Roselyn's pulse. She let out a shocked huff, "She is getting better. I'll go call the physician right away." Madame Sino rushed out of the room.

Once she stepped out, Genevieve shut the door and looked at Robellia, "You'd better start explaining yourself. You scared the hell out of me. What the heck was that? shit i thought we were going to die. And who were those people? Are they ghosts? Bloody hell, Liya." "Shhhh! Keep your voice down. She might hear you." Robellia indicated to Roselyn. Genevieve looked at her with a pitiful look.

Robellia sighed and pulled two chairs to the corner of the room and sat down. Genevieve followed suit and looked at her friend, waiting to hear her out. Robellia let out an exhausted breath, "I don't know where to even start. Gene, there is something I've been hiding from everyone...." She began to explain herself in a short but simple manner that Genevieve would slowly process. "My best friend and her mother are witches. You can see ghosts that guide you. And did I just do spell back there?" "Technically, no. I did the spell. You helped me not lose my soul in the process. Spells like that come with a huge cost; luckily, you helped me evade that cost."

"So what you are saying is that you would have died back there? What if I hadn't come in here, Liya? Who would have anchored you then?" Genevieve lectured her reckless friend, "I am the reckless one, Liya. I am the headstrong one. You can't just be doing shit like that." Genevieve took in a deep breath. "Are you okay?" Robellia looked at her and smiled, "I've never felt better. I feel free. I can still feel it coursing through me. the power." Robellia looked down at her hands. "Mother mustn't know you, you know about this gene. Promise me she won't know." "Liya..." Robellia held both of Genevieve's hands, "Please! You don't know her. the lengths she would go to, to keep me safe. Everyone is a threat to her Gene. Ever since her father died, she has become paranoid. I have seen what she can do. I love her. I really do, but deep down, she scares me, Gene. So promise me."
