….

I misjudged the angle of the sixth spear. It slipped past my guard, grazing the flat of my blade, and drove itself cleanly through my left shoulder.

The sheer kinetic force of the impact lifted me off my feet and slammed me backward, pinning me hard into the dirt.

The Fallen Angel didn't give me a second to breathe.

Before I could even attempt to pull the light spear out of my shoulder, Dohnaseek formed another one and drove it straight through my right thigh, pinning me to the grass.

I let out a sharp hiss through my teeth. The pain was blinding, burning like hot iron, but the Gamer's Body passive kept my mind from going into shock.

Dohnaseek slowly descended, landing softly on the grass a few feet away. The smug, arrogant smirk had returned to his bloody face.

He looked at the two glowing spears pinning me to the dirt, thoroughly convinced he had won.

"Any last words, kid?" he sneered, crossing his arms.

I tilted my head back, looking up at him. Despite the agonizing pain, I forced a smile.

"Just one," I rasped. I took a deep breath, pulling from the ancient, draconic power resting in my chest. "FUS."

It wasn't a spell. It was a localized shockwave of pure kinetic force.

The air warped in front of my mouth, and an invisible battering ram slammed directly into Dohnaseek's chest.

The impact threw him completely off his feet, sending him tumbling backward in a dazed, uncoordinated heap.

Before he could even register what had hit him, a blur of grey fur shot out of the brush.

My familiar, the spectral wolf, didn't hesitate. It lunged, clamping its massive jaws directly around Dohnaseek's throat.

The Fallen Angel screamed, a wet, gurgling sound, as the wolf viciously thrashed its head, tearing into flesh and feathers before throwing the man violently back into the dirt.

Dohnaseek lay there, choking. Blood spilled down his neck, soaking his ruined collar. He could barely move, his body limp and broken, but as he stared past the snarling wolf, his blood-stained lips curled into a weak, triumphant smile.

"I-it... won't... matter..." he coughed, his voice a wet rasp. "You're... finished. Your... master... is dead..."

Shink.

Dohnaseek let out a muffled shriek as the light spear he had thrown into my leg was suddenly violently driven into his own shin.

His eyes blew wide open. He looked up.

I was standing right over him, perfectly fine. My left hand was casually dragging the unconscious exorcist by the collar of his coat.

The gaping holes in my shoulder and leg were completely gone, stitched back together by a concentrated burst of Healing magic.

Dohnaseek couldn't speak. He just stared at my unblemished skin, his mind unable to comprehend how I was still walking. He weakly formed a fist, his eyes shaking. "H-how...?"

I dropped the exorcist's heavy body directly onto Dohnaseek's chest, making the Fallen Angel grunt in agony.

"Because you thought I was nothing more than a human," I said, my voice ice-cold. "You never stopped to wonder if I could be something more."

I pressed my palm flat against his forehead.

A lethal surge of electricity pumped directly into his skull. Dohnaseek stiffened, his eyes rolling back, and breathed his last, charred breath.

A second later, his body dissolved entirely, breaking apart into a flurry of black feathers that scattered into the night wind.

I let out a long exhale, the adrenaline finally starting to crash. I looked down at my spectral wolf, who was sitting obediently by my side.

"You didn't get hurt, did you, boy?" I asked, reaching down to scratch behind his ears. The wolf leaned into my hand, nuzzling my palm. "I'll take that as a no."

I looked down at the unconscious exorcist. I couldn't just leave a body in the middle of a public park. As I was trying to figure out what to do, I caught a glimpse of a faint, crimson light glowing deep in the woods.

A teleportation circle.

"Well," I muttered, dismissing my familiar. "Looks like Rias is coming to claim her prize. It would be a shame to leave evidence lying around."

I quickly triggered ****. The world around me distorted, shifting into the instanced zombie dungeon.

I unceremoniously dumped the exorcist onto the pavement, leaving him for the undead mobs to deal with. It was brutal, but I didn't have time to play nice.

I immediately dropped the dungeon, returning to the real world. I sprinted through the park, heading straight for the central fountain where Isabella's date with 'Yuma' was supposed to end.

I pushed through the bushes, bursting into the clearing.

Empty.

There was no Fallen Angel, no Rias, and no Isabella. The only thing left was a massive, terrifying pool of fresh blood staining the cobblestones near the fountain's edge.

I gritted my teeth, a heavy wave of guilt and anger crashing over me. I slammed my fist against the stone rim of the fountain, cracking the concrete.

"I was too late."

Monday Morning.

The weekend was an absolute blur of anxiety. After seeing that pool of blood, I couldn't focus on training.

I knew the plot.

I knew Rias was supposed to reincarnate Isabella using her Evil Pieces, but seeing the actual aftermath made it terrifyingly real.

What if I had changed the timeline too much? What if Rias didn't get there in time?

Sunday afternoon, I actually walked over to Isabella's house. I knocked on the door, asking her parents if she was around.

They looked a bit surprised, since I'd never been over before, but when I explained we were friends from class, they warmed up to me.

However, they told me they hadn't seen her since Saturday evening. "She's probably just sleeping over at a friend's house," her mother had said.

That gave me a sliver of hope. Rias had the power to manipulate memories. If Isabella had truly died permanently, Rias would have erased her existence from her parents' minds. The fact that they still remembered her meant she was alive. Somewhere.

I didn't sleep much that night. But when Monday morning finally rolled around, I was the first student to arrive at Kuoh Academy.

I stood by the window in the second-floor hallway, looking down at the front gates as hundreds of students flooded in. I scanned the crowd anxiously until, finally, I saw her.

Isabella. She was walking through the gates, looking completely fine, healthy, and entirely intact. And walking right beside her, chatting amicably, was Rias Gremory.

I slumped against the wall, letting out a breath I felt like I'd been holding for two days. She was okay. She was a devil now, but she was alive.
