"How can something so deadly be so beautiful?" I murmured.

I hadn't meant to say it out loud.

Kalawarner froze. She slowly turned her head to look at me, her cyan eyes wide. A deep blush spread across her cheeks, completely breaking her intimidating aura.

"You..." she stammered, her voice incredibly soft. "You still find me attractive? Even though I'm a Fallen Angel?"

I opened my mouth to answer, but my Presence skill flared violently.

I leaned back just in time to feel the cold steel of a blade slice through the air, missing my throat by a millimeter. Jack, the exorcist, had moved in while I was distracted. Before I could counter, he spun and planted a heavy kick square in my stomach.

The force lifted me off my feet, sending me flying backward until I crashed hard into the trunk of a thick oak tree. I slumped into the brush, groaning as the system updated my status.

Through the leaves, I could hear Kalawarner yelling. "Enough, Dohnaseek! I'll kill him! Just leave!"

"You had your chance," Dohnaseek shot back. "Now, as second-in-command, I am ordering you to leave the battlefield and return to the hideout. Now!"

I peeked through the bushes. Kalawarner had her fists clenched, her body trembling with rage.

For a second, I thought she might actually fight him.

But the hierarchy won. She bit her lip, gave the brush where I was hiding one last, conflicted look, and took to the sky, vanishing into the night.

"Time to end this," Dohnaseek said. The air crackled around his hand as a massive spear of yellow light materialized in his grasp. "Good riddance. We don't need any more unpredictable Sacred Gear wielders running around."

He hurled the spear directly at the bushes where I had landed.

Idiots, I thought.

While they were arguing, I hadn't just been lying there. I had already pushed mana into my hands.

My skin hardened, taking on the dense, unyielding properties of ironwood just as the light spear pierced the brush and struck me right in the lower stomach.

I braced for agonizing pain, but... it felt like getting punched by a middle schooler. The spear shattered against my magically reinforced skin.

I actually smiled. Thirty points of damage. That was it.

Out on the path, Dohnaseek landed next to the exorcist, dusting off his coat. "Come on. No normal human could live through a direct hit from that."

"Are you sure?" Jack asked, sheathing his sword.

I raised my right hand, aiming perfectly through the gap in the leaves.

A massive, jagged shard of sub-zero ice shot out of the darkness and slammed directly into Jack's right shoulder. It punctured clean through the meat and bone, exiting out his back.

Jack let out a strangled scream, his knees buckling as he collapsed into the dirt, clutching his rapidly freezing arm.

Dohnaseek jumped back, his eyes darting frantically toward the bushes.

I stepped out of the shadows, clapping my hands in a slow, mocking rhythm. The icy blue aura of my magic was still clinging to my skin.

"I hope you boys know," I said, a dark grin spreading across my face, "that as of right now, you're both completely screwed for ruining my date."

I didn't give them time to process it. With my Agility at 40, I crossed the distance in the blink of an eye.

Before Dohnaseek could even raise his hands to defend himself, I grabbed the lapels of his trench coat and drove my knee straight into his face.

The sickening crunch of his nose echoed in the park as he flew backward, his fedora tumbling off his head and into the grass.

Jack, pushing through the pain of his impaled shoulder, tried to swing his good fist at my ribs.

I casually caught his wrist, twisted it, and casually hurled him into a nearby tree. He hit the bark and slumped into an unconscious heap.

I turned my attention back to the Fallen Angel, who was just starting to stumble to his feet, blood pouring from his nose. With his hat gone, I could see his receding hairline and greasy face.

"Now I see why you wear the hat," I mocked.

I snapped my fingers.

A blinding arc of electricity slammed into his chest.

He screamed, dropping to his knees as his muscles seized. I didn't stop there. I sprinted forward, jumped, and delivered a brutal flying kick square to his sternum.

He was launched through the air, crashing into the same tree I had been thrown against earlier.

Unlike the exorcist, though, Dohnaseek was a Fallen Angel. He grunted, spitting blood onto the grass, and forced himself to stand.

The look of arrogant superiority was completely gone, replaced by pure, unadulterated panic.

"What the fuck are you?!" he screamed, his wings flaring. "When I sensed your aura, it was weak! You're just a human! What are you?!"

He didn't wait for an answer. Desperate, he rapidly formed another light spear and hurled it at my chest.

I sidestepped the projectile easily and pushed my mana to its limits, dual-casting.

In my right hand, a ghostly wolf materialized with a howl, immediately charging toward the treeline. But more importantly, in my left hand, the air warped and solidified into the jagged, ominous shape of a glowing Daedric sword.

Seeing the blade, Dohnaseek panicked and took to the sky, desperately trying to put distance between us. From twenty feet up, he started rapidly firing off a barrage of light spears like a machine gun.

I moved, my ambidexterity perk making the heavy sword feel weightless. I swatted two spears out of the air, the Daedric magic shattering the light constructs on impact, and cleanly dodged three more.

But I was grounded, and he had the high ground.

I misjudged the angle of the sixth spear. It slipped past my guard, grazing the flat of my blade, and drove itself cleanly through my left shoulder.

The sheer kinetic force of the impact lifted me off my feet and slammed me backward, pinning me hard into the dirt.
